Three days of historic racing at Goodwood's motor circuit, staged entirely in the period 1948 to 1966, with most of the crowd in period dress.

The Revival is a historic race meeting held on the Goodwood Motor Circuit, a 3.8-kilometer loop of the perimeter road of a former RAF airfield that ran competitive racing from 1948 until 1966 and was then left largely untouched. The estate reopened it in 1998 with a proposition that has not been softened since: the meeting takes place in the period the circuit was active, and everything visible is dressed to it. Marshals, signage, fuel pumps, catering, aircraft and vehicles are all of the era, modern branding is kept out of the public areas, and the effect over three days is closer to a film set that happens to be racing than to a vintage weekend.
The racing is serious. Grids include pre-1963 closed-cockpit GT cars in the RAC TT Celebration, motorcycles in the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy, and single-seaters in a race named for Sir Jack Brabham, alongside sports cars, saloons and pre-war machinery. The cars are original and valuable, they are driven hard, and the circuit is fast and unforgiving. The estate publishes twelve hours of programme a day, of which about ten are on-track.
Away from the circuit the estate runs a recreated period motor show under the Earls Court name, a concours of period aircraft with historic flyovers, and workshops on vintage clothing and repair. The dress code is the event's most famous feature: period dress is not compulsory, but the estate states that most visitors wear it, and access to the central paddock requires jackets and ties for men and dresses or suits for women.
01Perché è rilevante
The Revival solved a problem that historic racing everywhere else has failed to solve, which is how to make the past legible rather than nostalgic. By restricting the meeting to the years the circuit actually operated and enforcing that restriction on everything from clothing to catering, it produces an internally consistent world instead of a display of old cars. It is also, in practice, one of the most valuable grids assembled anywhere: cars that appear at auction with eight-figure estimates are raced here in traffic. In our reading, the Revival is the single best-executed event in the automotive calendar, and the only one whose central idea could not be copied by another venue, because it depends on a circuit that was left alone for thirty years.
02La settimana intorno all'evento
West Sussex is busy but not overwhelmed in the way it is in July, because the Revival is a three-day meeting rather than a four-day festival and its crowd is smaller. Chichester, Midhurst, Petworth and Arundel take the accommodation, the Downs villages take the dinners, and the coast at Bosham and West Wittering is still open at the end of the season. On the estate, the aerodrome hosts the period aircraft display and flyovers, the hotel operates through the weekend, and the circuit's own buildings are dressed for the period.
The collector-car trade uses the meeting the way it uses Monterey and Villa d'Este: dealers, restorers and auction specialists attend, deals are discussed, and the surrounding country hotels are booked by the industry. What the visitor sees is a public event with a strict aesthetic rather than a trade fair, and almost all of it is included in a day ticket.
03Quando arrivare
Friday, if you can. It is the least crowded of the three days, the racing is full-length, and the paddocks are approachable. Saturday is the busiest and carries the largest race programme. Sunday holds the RAC TT Celebration and the meeting's emotional close. Two days is the right length; visitors staying locally should arrive Thursday evening and leave Monday, because the lanes around the circuit are slow at both ends of each day.
04Dove alloggiare
The same map as the Festival of Speed, with slightly less pressure on it. Chichester is the practical base and is on the London rail line. Midhurst, Petworth and the villages under the South Downs offer country hotels and pubs with rooms, taken early by returning visitors and the motor trade. Arundel is pleasant and well placed. The coastal villages around Chichester Harbour suit anyone extending the trip. Goodwood's own hotel on the estate is the closest and is committed a long way ahead. London at two hours works for day visitors using the train.
05Accesso e ospitalità
Goodwood sells advance tickets by day and for the weekend, with enclosure and grandstand options around the circuit and a range of hospitality packages; detailed category names were not published on the event's landing page at the time of checking. Attendance is managed and tickets are sold in advance rather than at the gate. A general admission ticket covers the paddocks, the aerodrome display, the period motor show and the trackside enclosures. The one genuine access restriction is sartorial rather than financial: the central paddock requires period-appropriate formal dress, which the estate states plainly.
06Dove si svolge l'attività sociale
The paddocks, where the cars sit in the open and the crowd circulates; the Earls Court motor show building; the aerodrome, where the period aircraft are displayed and the flyovers stage from; the trackside enclosures at Madgwick and Woodcote; and the period-dressed bars, dance floors and food stalls that the estate runs through the day. In the evening, the pubs and hotels of the Downs villages and Chichester's restaurants, many of them holding tables for returning visitors.

09Storia
Goodwood's motor circuit opened in 1948 on the perimeter track of RAF Westhampnett, a wartime fighter station, and was one of Britain's principal race venues through the 1950s and early 1960s. It closed to full racing in 1966 rather than accept the modifications that rising speeds demanded, and survived as a test track. That refusal is why the Revival exists: the circuit was never rebuilt, so it still has its original layout, buildings and character. The Duke of Richmond reopened it for competition in 1998, fifty years after the first meeting, and the Revival has run annually since, apart from the pandemic interruption. The estate's other two motorsport events, the Festival of Speed and the spring Members' Meeting, grew up around it.
10Chi è presente
Collectors, owner-drivers and marque specialists; the historic-car trade, including restorers, dealers and auction houses; a large and loyal British public that returns annually and treats the dressing-up as the point; vintage clothing and design enthusiasts drawn by the aesthetic rather than the racing; and international visitors, particularly American and European, for whom this is the one British motoring event worth crossing an ocean for.

The Revival's weekend has moved across the first three weekends of September in recent years, so no reliable estimate is possible; September is given as the typical month. | |
