The Festival of Speed is built around a hillclimb that is really the drive of a private house. The course runs 1,890 meters from a start line on the lawn in front of Goodwood House, through nine turns and a flint wall that has caught out generations of drivers, climbing ninety-three meters to a finish on the down above. Cars run one at a time, against the clock on Sunday and for display on the other days, and the entry ranges from Edwardian aero-engined machinery to current Formula 1 cars, rally cars, motorcycles and prototypes.

Around the hill the estate carries the rest of the event: a rally stage cut through the forest since 2006, an off-road arena, a technology exhibition, paddocks laid out under canvas where the cars sit unroped, and the Cartier Style et Luxe concours on the lawn, an invitational judging of significant cars that has run since 1995. In front of the house stands the central feature, a sculpture commissioned each year to honor a marque or a career, which has become the event's signature image.

The Festival now functions as the motor industry's principal summer showcase in Europe. Manufacturers use the hill to launch road cars, run demonstrations and entertain guests, and the paddocks put current works teams next to private collections. Attendance is capped and tickets are sold in advance by day, which keeps the site usable across four days that would otherwise be unmanageable.

01Waarom het relevant is

No other event puts this range of machinery in motion in one place. Goodwood's advantage is that the cars run rather than sit: a concours shows what a car looks like, and the Festival shows what it sounds like at full throttle between two banks of straw bales. Commercially, it has become the fixed point in the European motor industry's calendar, more useful to manufacturers than any motor show now that the traditional shows have declined, and it draws marques, collectors and dealers from across the world in a way a British summer event has no obvious right to. In our reading, the Festival's most valuable quality is proximity: the paddocks are open, the cars are unroped, and a general admission ticket puts an ordinary visitor within a meter of things that are normally behind glass.

02De week eromheen

West Sussex fills. Chichester, six kilometers south, is the practical town and takes most of the visiting trade, along with Midhurst, Petworth, Arundel and the villages along the Downs; the coast at Bosham and West Wittering carries the overflow. Hotels within an hour are committed months ahead and many apply minimum stays. On the estate itself, the hotel, the golf courses and the aerodrome all operate through the event, and the Duke's own house is open in part.

The motor industry brings its own week. Manufacturers hold press launches on the Thursday and dinners across the estate through the weekend, dealers and auction houses take rooms in the country hotels, and the collector-car market treats the days on either side as trading time. Reporting each July describes an extensive programme of brand hospitality on the estate; the public counterpart is the paddocks, the rally stage and the concours lawn, all included with a day ticket.

03Wanneer aan te komen

Thursday if you want to see the cars without a crowd around them, since it is by some distance the quietest day and the paddocks are at their most approachable. Friday and Saturday are the fullest. Sunday carries the timed shootout, which is the only genuinely competitive part of the weekend. Most visitors come for one or two days rather than four; those staying locally should arrive the evening before and leave the morning after, because the estate's approach roads are slow at both ends of each day.

04Waar te verblijven

Chichester is the obvious base, on the London rail line and close enough to reach the estate by shuttle. Midhurst, Petworth and the villages beneath the South Downs are prettier and quieter, with a scattering of country hotels and pubs with rooms that fill first. Arundel is a good compromise. The coastal strip at Bosham, Itchenor and West Wittering suits visitors combining the Festival with sailing. Goodwood's own hotel on the estate is the closest option and is committed far ahead. London is two hours away and is used as a base by day visitors who take the train.

05Toegang en hospitality

Goodwood sells day tickets in advance, with separate pricing for young people between thirteen and twenty-one and for children, and a roving grandstand pass that allows access to seated viewing around the hill. The estate publishes a range of hospitality packages alongside general admission. Attendance is capped and tickets are not sold at the gate, so planning ahead is not optional. A general admission ticket covers the paddocks, the rally stage, the concours lawn and the exhibition areas, which is unusually generous; the restricted areas are the hospitality enclosures and the parts of the paddock reserved for entrants.

06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt

The paddocks, which are the real meeting place and are open to all ticket holders; the concours lawn in front of the house; the grandstand terraces at the start line and at Molecomb; and the estate's own hotel and clubhouse in the evening. Off the estate, the pubs of the South Downs villages and the restaurants of Chichester carry the nights, and the country hotels within half an hour host the industry's private dinners.

07Hoe u er komt

Commerciële luchtvaartLondon Gatwick (LGW) is about an hour away and is the practical international arrival; Southampton (SOU) is closer for domestic routes and Heathrow (LHR) is ninety minutes.
TreinChichester station is served from London Victoria in about an hour and forty minutes, with connections along the south coast; Goodwood runs shuttle buses from the station and from park-and-ride sites during the event. Taking the train and the shuttle is considerably less painful than driving.
AutoThe A27 and the lanes north of Chichester are the approach and they do not cope well. Goodwood operates extensive park-and-ride and traffic management; arrival before mid-morning and departure after the crowd are the standard advice.
PrivéluchtvaartGoodwood Aerodrome sits on the estate and handles light aircraft, with prior permission required and heavy demand during the Festival; Farnborough (FAB) and Gatwick take business jets.
HelikopterHelicopter access to the estate operates during the Festival under arrangements published by Goodwood each year, and is a common way to arrive from London.
JachthavensChichester Harbour, ten kilometers south, is one of the largest natural harbours on the south coast, with marinas at Chichester, Emsworth and Itchenor; visitors combining the Festival with sailing use them, though they play no part in the event.

08Praktische informatie

DresscodeUnlike the Revival, the Festival has no dress code, and the estate describes it as a summer garden party rather than prescribing anything. In practice the enclosures are smart summer dress and the general admission areas are entirely casual. The variable is the ground: four days on grass in a West Sussex July can mean dust or deep mud, and footwear should assume the latter.
WeerJuly on the South Downs is warm and unreliable, with long daylight, occasional genuine heat and a fair chance of rain across four days. The estate is exposed on the higher ground near the finish line, and shade is limited to the woods around the rally stage.
Verplaatsing ter plaatseUse the train to Chichester and the shuttle, or the park-and-ride. Inside the estate the distances are substantial and mostly uphill; walking from the entrance to the top of the hill and back is a serious part of the day. The rally stage is at the far end of the site and needs planning rather than wandering.
HotelsThe tightest weekend of the year for accommodation in West Sussex. Country hotels and pubs with rooms within half an hour are taken six months to a year ahead, often by returning industry guests, and minimum stays are common. Chichester, Portsmouth and the coast hold more capacity, and a London base with an early train is a workable alternative.
RestaurantsChichester and the Downs villages are fully booked across the weekend, and several country pubs are taken over for private events. Reserve well ahead or eat on the estate, where the catering is extensive if unremarkable.
ReserveringstimingAccommodation six months or more ahead for anything within half an hour; tickets on release, since the event sells by day in advance and does not sell at the gate; hospitality earlier still.
TicketsSold in advance by Goodwood, by day, with general admission plus reduced categories for young people aged thirteen to twenty-one and for children, and a roving grandstand pass for seated viewing. Attendance is capped and tickets are not available at the gate. Prices are not restated here.
HospitalityGoodwood publishes a range of hospitality packages sold through the estate; specific package names were not listed on the event's landing page at the time of checking. Manufacturer hospitality on the estate is extensive and is by invitation rather than sale, which is the main practical distinction between the two kinds of access here.

09Geschiedenis

Lord March, now the Duke of Richmond, staged the first Festival of Speed in 1993, having been refused permission to reopen the estate's motor circuit and having decided instead to run cars up his own driveway. The event grew quickly from a few thousand visitors to a capped attendance in the six figures, with an advance-ticket-only policy introduced after a record crowd in 2003. The Cartier concours arrived in 1995, the forest rally stage in 2006, and the annual sculpture in front of the house became a commission of its own. The circuit itself reopened in 1998 for the Goodwood Revival, and the estate now runs three motorsport events a year, with the Members' Meeting in spring.

10Wie is er

The motor industry in force, from manufacturers and their engineering staff to dealers, restorers and auction houses; collectors and marque clubs; a very large British enthusiast public across all four days; families, for whom the estate works better than a racetrack; and international visitors, particularly from Europe, North America and the Gulf, who plan a summer trip around it.
