A televised dinner in a Beverly Hills ballroom each January that honors both film and television and opens the awards season.

An event page tells you when it happens (with how sure we are of the date), why it matters, how the week around it feels, when to arrive and leave, where people stay, how access works, and which events come before and after it on the circuit.

Dates · 84th Golden Globe Awards ConfirmedThe organizer's own site carries Sunday, January 10, 2027 for the 84th Golden Globe Awards, with Nikki Glaser returning as host and CBS and Paramount+ again carrying the broadcast, and describes it as the first major award show of the season. The page fetched did not restate the venue, so the per-edition venue is left null; the ceremony has been held in the International Ballroom of The Beverly Hilton since 1961.

The Globes are unusual among the major awards in three ways at once. They are decided by a small international voting body rather than by an industry academy — 310 voters as of 2024, drawn from journalists representing 76 countries, of whom 95 were members of the old Hollywood Foreign Press Association. They cover film and television in the same evening, and since 2026 podcasts as well, across 28 categories. And they are staged as a dinner: the room is the International Ballroom of The Beverly Hilton, with the nominees at banquet tables and waiters working between them, rather than a theatre with rows of seats. That single format decision explains most of what the ceremony looks like on screen.

The evening runs about three hours on CBS and Paramount+, with arrivals on the hotel's Wilshire Boulevard frontage beforehand. Two honorary awards are given most years: the Cecil B. DeMille Award for film and the Carol Burnett Award for television. Because the Globes fall in the first half of January — ahead of the Academy's nominations voting and well ahead of the BAFTA and Oscar ballots — the organizer markets the night as the first major award show of the season, and the trade press treats the results as an early read on it.

There is nothing here for a visitor to attend. The ceremony is invitation-only and the hotel's public areas are partly closed for it. What the week offers instead is Los Angeles in early January: a quiet, clear, pleasant stretch of the local year before the industry's February workload, with the Academy Museum, the city's repertory cinemas and the restaurant districts all functioning normally.

01Why it matters

Its value to the calendar is positional. Coming ten weeks before the Oscars and before Academy nominations voting opens, the Globes are the first large public verdict on a film year, and a win here demonstrably raises a title's visibility during the weeks that matter most to its campaign. The double remit also gives television its only place alongside film at an event of this scale, which is why streamer and network executives attend in numbers that no other film award draws.

The institution is also the most recently rebuilt of the major awards, and that is worth knowing. After the criticism of 2021, the studio and network boycott that followed, and the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2023, the Globes now sit inside a commercial company rather than a members' association. In our reading the ceremony has recovered its audience faster than its authority: the room is full again and the broadcast reaches roughly eighteen million people, but the prize carries less predictive weight than it did, and is best read as a publicity event with a real effect rather than as a judgment.

02The week around it

Beverly Hills absorbs one evening rather than a season. The hotel's grounds are given over to the arrivals structure and the broadcast compound for several days beforehand, and Wilshire Boulevard at Santa Monica — one of the busiest intersections in the city — carries closures and diverted traffic on the Sunday afternoon and evening. Guests staying at the hotel are affected; everyone else in Beverly Hills is mildly inconvenienced.

Beyond the hotel there is no public programme. Reporting each year describes a cluster of studio, network and publication receptions across Beverly Hills and West Hollywood that night, none of them open to visitors. Early January is otherwise one of the better weeks to be in Los Angeles: the holiday traffic has gone, the air is usually clear after winter rain, and the film year's contenders are all still playing in the city's cinemas.

03When to arrive

There is no reason to time a trip to the ceremony unless you are in it. If you are in Los Angeles that weekend, arrive Friday and avoid the Wilshire corridor on Sunday afternoon. Anyone coming for the film year rather than the night itself should plan for the preceding week, when the nominated films are in cinemas and the city is quiet.

04Where to stay

Beverly Hills is the obvious base and the most affected: the Beverly Wilshire at the foot of Rodeo Drive and the Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunset are the landmarks people navigate by, and The Beverly Hilton itself is largely committed on ceremony weekend. West Hollywood and the Sunset Strip are five to fifteen minutes east with the densest concentration of hotel bars and restaurants. Century City, immediately west, is quieter, newer and unaffected by the closures. Santa Monica is twenty minutes away in good traffic and a different kind of stay altogether.

05Access and hospitality

The ceremony is invitation-only. Seats at the ballroom tables are allocated through the organizer to nominees and their guests, to studios, networks and streamers, and to the voting body and press; there is no public ticket, no ballot and no accreditation route for general visitors. The organizer publishes no hospitality packages, and anything sold as a Globes seat or after-party invitation should be treated as fraudulent. The Beverly Hilton is a working hotel the rest of the year and its bars, restaurant and pool are open to the public outside event closures.

06Where the social activity happens

Almost all of it is inside one building for one evening, which makes the public geography thin. The arrivals are visible only from behind barriers on the Wilshire Boulevard frontage. What is open is the surrounding district: the Golden Triangle between Wilshire and Santa Monica, with Rodeo Drive and the restaurants on Canon and Beverly Drive; the hotel bars along Sunset in West Hollywood, which are where the industry is actually visible across the whole of awards season; and the Century City and Melrose restaurant clusters either side. For film rather than people, the Academy Museum on Wilshire at Fairfax is fifteen minutes east.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationLos Angeles International (LAX) is 16 km south of Beverly Hills, typically 25 to 45 minutes by road. Hollywood Burbank (BUR) is a faster terminal with a longer drive over the hill; Long Beach (LGB) and John Wayne (SNA) are alternatives.
RailThe Metro D Line extension serves Beverly Hills at Wilshire/Rodeo, a few minutes' walk from the hotel, and runs east to Koreatown and Downtown Los Angeles. Amtrak services terminate at Union Station downtown.
CarThe I-405 and I-10 frame the district and Wilshire, Santa Monica and Sunset boulevards carry it. Driving in Beverly Hills is straightforward outside rush hour and the public garages along the Golden Triangle are numerous; the Wilshire and Santa Monica intersection is closed or restricted around the ceremony.
Private aviationVan Nuys (VNY) is the region's principal business-aviation field, thirty to forty-five minutes north over the hill; Burbank also handles business traffic and LAX has its own business terminal.

08Practicalities

DressBlack tie and long gowns inside the ballroom, and because it is a dinner rather than a theatre the evening is longer on its feet than it looks. Outside the ceremony, January in Los Angeles is a jacket-and-scarf city after dark and nothing more formal than that is needed anywhere in Beverly Hills.
WeatherEarly January is the coolest and one of the wettest stretches of the Los Angeles year: afternoons typically in the high teens Celsius, evenings near ten, and a real chance of Pacific rain that has reached the arrivals carpet before. Clear days after a storm are the best light the city gets. No station normals were sourced for this record, so the summary is qualitative.
Getting aroundThe Metro D Line station at Wilshire/Rodeo makes Beverly Hills reachable without a car for the first time, which matters on a night when the Wilshire and Santa Monica junction is closed. Ride-hail pickups near the hotel are pushed several blocks out during the broadcast; walking north to Santa Monica Boulevard before requesting a car is faster than waiting.
HotelsCeremony weekend firms rates across Beverly Hills and West Hollywood but does not fill the city — early January is otherwise a soft season in Los Angeles, and rooms are generally available at short notice outside the immediate blocks around the hotel. The Beverly Hilton itself is committed months ahead.
RestaurantsTables in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood tighten from the Friday, and a number of restaurants take private bookings on the Sunday evening, so that night's published hours should not be assumed. Monday is quiet and easy.
Reservation timingHotels can usually be secured a few weeks out for early January, earlier for the Golden Triangle addresses. Restaurant tables for the Friday and Saturday are worth booking two weeks ahead; the Sunday is unpredictable.
TicketsNo public ticket exists. Admission to the ballroom is by invitation through the organizer and the participating studios, networks and streamers, and the seats are not transferable or resold. The broadcast on CBS and Paramount+ is the only general access to the event, and it is the access the organizer intends.
HospitalityThe organizer publishes no purchasable hospitality programme. Broadcast sponsors and brand partners run invitation-based activations of their own, and the receptions around the ceremony are staged by studios, networks and publications on their own lists. None of it is sold to visitors.

09History

The first Globes were awarded in 1944 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, an organization of foreign correspondents based in Los Angeles founded the year before, and the HFPA presented them for eighty years. The ceremony settled into The Beverly Hilton's International Ballroom in 1961 — six years after Welton Becket's hotel opened at Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards, and three years after the ballroom reopened as the largest on the West Coast at 1,700 seats — and has been there ever since.

The rupture came in 2021, when the HFPA was criticized for having no Black members. Netflix, Amazon, NBC and WarnerMedia withdrew support, one actor returned his awards, and the association promised a fifty per cent membership expansion. A restructuring under Todd Boehly's Eldridge Industries followed, and on June 12, 2023 Dick Clark Productions — owned by Penske Media and Eldridge — acquired the Globes outright; the HFPA's charitable work passed to a separate Golden Globe Foundation. The voting body was rebuilt as an international panel of working journalists, and new categories have been added since, including cinematic and box-office achievement and, at the 83rd ceremony, podcasts.

10Who is there

Film and television nominees with their agents and publicists; studio, network and streaming executives in larger numbers than at any other film award, because television is on the same card; the international voting body of journalists; presenters and performers booked for the broadcast; the jewelry and fashion houses dressing the arrivals; and an accredited press and photography corps on the Wilshire frontage and in the backstage rooms.
