Geneva auction week is a coincidence that hardened into an institution. Twice a year, in May and in November, the four houses that dominate the watch and jewelry market — Christie's, Sotheby's, Phillips in association with Bacs & Russo, and Antiquorum — hold their most important sales within a few days of each other in Geneva. Nobody organizes the week; each house sets its own date and they have converged because collectors will make one trip and not four.

The rhythm is consistent. Previews open several days before the first sale and run in parallel across hotels and salerooms in the city, free to walk into with a catalogue or an appointment. The sales themselves then run back to back over a long weekend, typically with Phillips taking a Saturday and Sunday and the others following into Monday and Tuesday. The jewelry sales — Christie's and Sotheby's magnificent jewels catalogues — run alongside the watches and draw a partly different audience.

What the week produces is the market's public record. Geneva sets the auction benchmarks that dealers, insurers and index compilers use for the following six months, and the results are reported far outside the trade. The November week has in recent years fallen alongside the GPHG awards ceremony, which concentrates the whole industry in the city in the same days.

01Waarom het relevant is

These few days determine what a great watch is worth. Because the four houses compete openly and consign the same categories, Geneva produces the deepest comparable results anywhere, and a strong or weak week is read as a verdict on the whole collecting market. Several of the highest prices ever paid for a wristwatch have been set in this city in these weeks.

In our reading, the week is also the most accessible part of the watch calendar, and almost nobody outside the trade realizes it. The previews are open, free and full of pieces that will disappear into private collections the following evening. A visitor with no intention of bidding can see more significant watches in two days here than at any fair.

02De week eromheen

Geneva absorbs auction week without much visible change. The lakefront hotels fill, the restaurants near the Rhône are busy in the evenings, and the specialists, dealers and collectors move on foot between previews that are rarely more than fifteen minutes apart. In May the city is at its most pleasant; in November it is grey and cold, and the November week has the added density of the GPHG.

The previews are the part worth planning around. They open before the sales and are the only time these objects are all in one city, and they are unticketed. A visitor can do three houses in an afternoon.

03Wanneer aan te komen

Arrive two days before the first sale to see the previews without a crowd, and stay through the sale you care about. Serious bidders come earlier still, to examine pieces properly and talk to the specialists before the rooms get busy. Three nights covers a week's worth of viewing and one or two sales.

04Waar te verblijven

The Rive Droite lakefront is where the auction world stays and where several of the previews and sales are held; walking distance covers most of the week. The old town and the Rive Gauche are quieter and better for eating, and no more than fifteen minutes away on foot. The May week is the busier of the two for hotels; November is easier unless a conference coincides.

05Toegang en hospitality

Previews are open to the public and free, published with hours by each house; catalogues are sold or given. Attending a sale in the room is generally possible for registered clients, and the houses stream and take telephone and online bids worldwide. Bidding requires registration, identification and, above a threshold, financial references, arranged in advance with each house separately. Private views, specialist appointments and client dinners are by invitation. There is no ticket and no hospitality tier.

06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt

The preview rooms themselves, which function as the week's meeting places and where the trade circulates openly; the lakefront hotel bars in the evenings; and the salerooms during the sales, which are noisy and sociable in a way art auctions no longer are. In November the GPHG exhibition and ceremony add another set of rooms in the same days.

07Hoe u er komt

Commerciële luchtvaartGeneva Airport (GVA) is fifteen minutes from the center by train or taxi.
TreinGeneva-Cornavin connects to Paris by TGV in around three hours and to Zurich, Basel, Bern, Lausanne and Milan on Swiss and Italian services. Most preview venues are a short walk or tram ride from the station.
AutoUnnecessary; the week is walkable and central parking is expensive.
PrivéluchtvaartGeneva is a principal European business-aviation airport. May auction week is busier than November, but neither approaches the pressure of the April fair.
HelikopterTransfers operate from the airport and from the Alps in season.
JachthavensLake harbors are recreational and irrelevant to the week.

08Praktische informatie

DresscodeBusiness dress for the salerooms and smart casual for the previews, where nobody minds. November requires a proper coat; May does not. Evening dinners hosted by the houses specify their own codes.
WeerTwo different weeks. May in Geneva is mild and green with long evenings; November is cold, often grey and sometimes foggy, with the Bise wind cutting along the lake. Everything is indoors either way. No station normals were sourced for this record.
Verplaatsing ter plaatseWalk or use the trams; hotel guests travel free on Geneva public transport. The preview venues cluster along the lake and the Rhône and are close together. Taxis after evening sales are scarce.
HotelsThe May week overlaps with a busy Geneva season and rooms tighten; November is easier except when a large conference or the GPHG draws additional demand. Two to three months ahead is generally sufficient for either.
RestaurantsCentral Geneva's restaurants are busy during both weeks, largely with client dinners hosted by the houses. Book a week or two ahead for the sale nights; Carouge and the Eaux-Vives are the reliable alternatives.
ReserveringstimingThe houses publish sale dates two to three months ahead and catalogues a few weeks before. Bidder registration should be completed at least a week before a sale, longer for first-time clients requiring references. Hotels two to three months ahead.
TicketsThere are no tickets. Previews are free and open with published hours. Saleroom attendance is for registered clients; sales are livestreamed free on the houses' own platforms. Catalogues are published in print and online.
HospitalityThe houses host their own clients at private views and dinners by invitation; none of it is for sale. Consignor and bidder services — viewing appointments, condition reports, shipping and financing — are handled individually by each house.

09Geschiedenis

Geneva became the center of watch auctions in the 1970s and 1980s, when Antiquorum, founded in the city, established the specialist watch sale as a category and staged the thematic auctions that created the modern market for vintage wristwatches. Christie's and Sotheby's built Geneva watch and jewelry departments alongside it, and the city's neutrality, banking infrastructure and proximity to the manufacturers made it the natural place to sell.

The arrival of Phillips' watch department in 2015, with a team recruited from Christie's, sharpened the competition and pushed prices and publicity to a new level. Since then the two weeks have been the fixed poles of the auction year, and the houses have added charity sales, single-owner collections and themed catalogues to hold their positions in them.

10Wie is er

Collectors and their advisers, dealers and brokers, museum and brand heritage departments buying back their own history, the auction houses' own specialists and consignors, and a substantial press contingent. The jewelry sales draw a partly separate constituency, including the estate and gemstone trade. Previews additionally attract enthusiasts and Geneva residents with no commercial interest at all.
