Scotland's national open, played on the East Lothian coast in the week before The Open and co-sanctioned by both major tours.
An event page tells you when it happens (with how sure we are of the date), why it matters, how the week around it feels, when to arrive and leave, where people stay, how access works, and which events come before and after it on the circuit.
The Scottish Open occupies the most useful week in golf: the seven days between the American season and The Open Championship, when leading players want links golf and a time zone. Since 2022 it has been co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour, so the field combines the European tour's regulars with a large contingent of Americans acclimatizing, and it has been in the DP World Tour's top prize-money tier since 2017. The 2026 purse was USD 9,000,000.
The venue is The Renaissance Club, a private course on the East Lothian coast between Archerfield and Muirfield, which has hosted since 2019 and is contracted through 2030. This stretch of coast east of Edinburgh holds more good links golf per mile than anywhere else, and the tournament sits in the middle of it. Crowds are large by tour standards and small by major standards, and the wind decides everything.
01Why it matters
The Scottish Open is the hinge of the British golf summer: it opens the two weeks that end with the Claret Jug, and for anyone building a golf trip to Scotland it is the natural anchor. In our reading its real value is regional rather than global.
02The week around it
East Lothian in July is at capacity anyway, and the tournament fills what is left.
The tournament's own surrounding programme is modest: hospitality pavilions on the course, a spectator village, and the tour's sponsor activity.
03When to arrive
Arrive Tuesday, play golf Tuesday and Wednesday, watch Thursday through Sunday, or split the difference and watch two days and play two.
04Where to stay
North Berwick is the obvious base, a Victorian seaside town with a small stock of hotels and a great deal of holiday letting, and it is walkable to the beach and the West Links.
05Access and hospitality
The DP World Tour sells tickets through its own tournament site, by day and for the full week, with the pro-am Wednesday available separately and generally cheaper. The tour's standard policy admits under-16s free when accompanied by a ticketed adult, and the Scottish Open has historically run junior and family concessions; confirm the current terms on the tournament page.
06Where the social activity happens
The tournament's public spaces are the spectator village and the grandstands at the closing holes.

09History
The championship dates to 1972, lapsed, and was revived in 1986. It spent its formative modern years inland, at Gleneagles and then at Loch Lomond from 1997 to 2010, a parkland course that made an odd preparation for links golf.
10Who is there
Scottish and northern English golf followers in numbers, a large American and continental European contingent combining the tournament with a golf trip and often with The Open the following week, the tour's sponsors and corporate hospitality from Scottish business, and the golf trade preparing for the championship.

Dates on record
| Edition | Dates | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 | ExpectedThe DP World Tour has confirmed The Renaissance Club as host through 2030, and the tournament's fixed position is the week immediately before The Open, which in 2027 begins on 15 July. That gives competitive rounds from Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 July 2027, the dates listed by hospitality sellers. Recorded as expected because the tour's own 2027 calendar entry was not read directly. | |
| 2026 | CompletedPlayed at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick with the tournament week running 8 to 12 July 2026 and the four competitive rounds on 9 to 12 July. The purse was USD 9,000,000, with USD 1,575,000 to the champion. |
