Frieze Los Angeles takes over part of Santa Monica Airport for four days at the end of February: a purpose-built structure on the apron, with the hangars and the runway edge used for large work and programming. It is a mid-sized fair, well under half the scale of Basel, organized around the city it sits in rather than around the international circuit. A large share of the exhibitors hold a Los Angeles space, and the programming leans on film, performance and artists who work in both. Thursday is an invitation-only preview, Friday to Sunday are public, and Frieze Projects places commissioned work around the site.

01Why it matters

Los Angeles has more working artists than any other American city and a museum infrastructure that expanded sharply through the 2010s, but it had no international fair until 2019. Frieze supplied the date, and international galleries opened Los Angeles spaces in its wake.

Our reading is that this is the least transactional of the major fairs and the most social. Attendance is heavily local, the film and music industries are present in numbers no other art fair sees, and the surrounding programme of openings and studio visits is what most visitors remember. That is a real function, but a different one from Basel's.

02The week around it

Frieze Week in Los Angeles is spread across the county rather than concentrated. Felix Art Fair, staged in the guest rooms and around the pool of the Hollywood Roosevelt, is the essential counterpart and the most enjoyable art event of the week. The gallery districts open new shows in Melrose Hill and Hollywood, Culver City, the downtown Arts District, and Santa Monica and Venice near the fair. The Broad and MOCA downtown, LACMA on Wilshire, the Hammer in Westwood and the Getty above the 405 all program into the week, and the Getty charges nothing. The real constraint is traffic.

03When to arrive

Wednesday if you hold a preview card, which gives Thursday at the fair and Thursday evening for the gallery openings. On a public ticket, Friday is the best day. Reserve at least one full day for the museums and one for gallery districts, and plan them geographically rather than by interest. Sunday afternoon at the fair is quiet.

04Where to stay

Santa Monica and Venice put the fair within a short drive and the beach at the door, and are the obvious base; the Fairmont Miramar and Shutters on the Beach are the landmark addresses. West Hollywood and Beverly Hills are more central for the evening programme and the Melrose Hill galleries, about half an hour away without traffic. Downtown suits anyone focused on MOCA, The Broad and the Arts District. The decision is entirely about which drives you will make twice a day.

05Access and hospitality

Frieze runs one invitation-only preview day on the Thursday and sells public tickets for Friday to Sunday on frieze.com. A Frieze membership carries preview access and is the published route for anyone without a gallery relationship. The organizer publishes prices annually and they are not reproduced here. Frieze Projects and the outdoor commissions are included in admission. Free alternatives are substantial: the Getty Center, the Getty Villa and the Hammer Museum all charge nothing, and the gallery openings are open-door.

06Where the social activity happens

Santa Monica's Main Street and Ocean Avenue take the crowd immediately after the fair, and Venice's Abbot Kinney Boulevard the evening after that. The Hollywood Roosevelt pool during Felix is the week's single most reliable public gathering point. West Hollywood along Sunset and Melrose, the hotel bars at the Sunset Tower and Chateau Marmont, and the restaurants around Melrose Hill hold the later evening. Everything requires a car, and the distances shape the week more than any guest list does.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationLos Angeles International (LAX) is fifteen minutes from Santa Monica outside peak hours and considerably longer during them. Burbank (BUR) is more convenient for Hollywood and the valley, Long Beach (LGB) and John Wayne (SNA) serve the south, and Ontario (ONT) the east.
RailAmtrak's Pacific Surfliner and the Coast Starlight serve Union Station downtown. The Metro E Line runs from downtown to Santa Monica and stops within a mile of the airport site, which is the only useful rail connection to the fair.
CarA car is effectively required. The 10 connects Santa Monica to downtown and the 405 runs north-south past the airport; both congest badly. Parking at the fair site is organized by the organizer and fills early, and ride-hailing surges heavily at closing time.
Private aviationVan Nuys is the busiest business aviation airport in the region, with Hawthorne, Burbank and Long Beach also in use. Santa Monica Airport's own runway was shortened in 2017 and the airport is scheduled to close at the end of 2028, which limits its use.
HelicopterCharter helicopter transfers operate between Van Nuys, downtown and the coast and are used during fair week to avoid the 405; several downtown buildings have licensed helipads.
MarinasMarina del Rey, immediately south of the fair site, is the largest man-made small-craft harbour in the country and the practical berth for visiting boats; deepwater berthing for large yachts is at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro.

08Practicalities

DressThe most relaxed of the major fairs. Daytime is casual and sunglasses are functional rather than affected; the fair structure is partly open and the apron is bright. February evenings on the coast are genuinely cold once the sun goes down, so a jacket matters more than most visitors expect. Evening events are smart-casual and almost never formal.
WeatherLate February in Los Angeles is mild and usually dry, with daytime highs around eighteen to twenty Celsius and evenings dropping into single figures near the coast. February is part of the wet season and rain, though uncommon, is possible and affects a partly outdoor site. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
Getting aroundPlan the week by geography. Santa Monica to downtown is 40 minutes without traffic and can be double that at the wrong hour. The Metro E Line is the one reliable alternative to driving between the fair and downtown. Ride-hailing surges at fair closing and after openings; ordering early or walking a few blocks first helps.
HotelsWest side and Hollywood rates rise for the week but Los Angeles has far more rooms than the fair needs, and availability holds much later than at other fairs on this circuit. Santa Monica and Venice fill first because of the proximity.
RestaurantsThe well-known rooms in West Hollywood, Santa Monica and downtown tighten during the week, with buyouts on the preview night. Los Angeles's depth of good, unbookable eating means this is rarely a problem. Two to three weeks ahead covers most reservations.
Reservation timingHotels three to four weeks ahead is usually sufficient. Restaurants two to three weeks. Public tickets go on sale online well in advance and the Saturday is the busiest day.
TicketsPublic day tickets for Friday to Sunday are sold on frieze.com. Prices are published each year by the organizer and are not reproduced here. Frieze Members receive preview access. The Getty Center, the Getty Villa and the Hammer Museum charge no admission during the same week, and gallery openings across the city are free.
HospitalityThe Thursday preview is by invitation from Frieze and from exhibiting galleries, with Frieze membership as the published alternative. On-site hospitality is partner-run and invitation-based. The wider week's programme of dinners and screenings belongs to galleries, brands and the studios rather than to the fair, and is not publicly bookable; Felix at the Hollywood Roosevelt is the most accessible of the week's satellite events.

09History

The fair opened in February 2019 on the Paramount Pictures backlot in Hollywood, using the studio's New York Street set for Frieze Projects, which gave the first editions an identity no other fair could copy. It returned there in 2020, was cancelled in 2021, and moved to a Beverly Hills site in 2022 before settling at Santa Monica Airport from 2023. The 2025 edition took place weeks after the January wildfires in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena, and reporting at the time described a fair reshaped around support for artists who had lost studios and work.

10Who is there

Los Angeles collectors in the greatest numbers, with a substantial New York and European contingent; the film, television and music industries, which are present here in a way they are at no other art fair; museum curators and trustees from the city's unusually large institutional base; and a very large local public across the weekend. The mix is younger and more informal than any other Frieze edition.
