The Engadin Skimarathon is the largest mass-participation sporting event in Switzerland and the second-largest cross-country ski race in the world. It starts at Maloja at 1,820 metres, crosses the frozen surfaces of Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana, passes below St. Moritz, climbs through the Stazerwald, drops to Pontresina, runs along the runway of Samedan airport and then follows the valley floor to finish at S-chanf at 1,670 metres, 42 kilometres later. A half marathon of 21 kilometres runs from Maloja to Pontresina and a women's race covers 17 kilometres.

Entry numbers have run between roughly 11,000 and 14,200 in recent decades, with about 13,500 skiers from more than sixty nations in a typical year and more than 3,500 first-timers. The field starts in waves from Maloja over more than an hour, and the leading skiers finish while the last blocks are still leaving the start pens. Around it, Marathon Week adds a night race and a set of supporting events, with a marathon village at Pontresina.

What makes it worth a place in this calendar is not the racing but the geography: for one Sunday, the entire Upper Engadin valley - four lakes, six villages and an airport - becomes a single course, and the whole population of the valley comes out to watch it pass.

01Lý do quan trọng

It is the Engadin's own event rather than a fixture imported into it. The Skimarathon has run since 1969, belongs to the Worldloppet series and is the reason the valley's cross-country network - among the most extensive in the Alps - exists at the scale it does. In our reading, its significance in the social calendar is different in kind from the other Engadin events: Snow Polo and White Turf bring an audience to St. Moritz, and this brings 13,500 participants who are the event. It closes the valley's winter in the way the polo opens it, and it is the most accessible thing in the entire St. Moritz year - anyone who can ski 42 kilometres can enter.

02Tuần lễ xung quanh sự kiện

The second week of March is the end of the Engadin's high season and the point at which the valley's own community reclaims the winter. Marathon Week fills the villages between Maloja and S-chanf with skiers and their families rather than the January resort crowd, hotel rates fall from their February peak, and the alpine skiing on Corviglia and Corvatsch is at its best of the year, with long days and reliable snow. On race Sunday the valley road is closed in stretches, the trains between St. Moritz, Pontresina and Zuoz run to a special timetable and are the way everybody moves, and the crossings of Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana are lined with spectators. It is entirely free to watch, from anywhere along the course. The best vantage points are the lake crossings early in the morning, the climb into the Stazerwald where the field stretches out, and the finish at S-chanf, which is a small village handling an enormous afternoon.

03Thời điểm đến

Racers arrive Friday or Saturday for bib collection and to ski a section of the course in daylight. Spectators need only the Sunday, but the Saturday is worth having for the women's race and for a day on the alpine slopes before the valley fills. Leave Monday: Sunday evening trains out of the valley after the finish are the busiest of the year.

04Nơi lưu trú

The whole valley is the venue, which changes the logic. Pontresina, at the half-marathon finish and the marathon village, is the most practical base and has a large hotel stock. St. Moritz is more expensive and no more convenient. Samedan, Celerina, Zuoz and S-chanf put you at the finish end and on the railway. Sils and Silvaplana are at the start end, which suits racers who want a short transfer to Maloja on the morning. Anything on the Rhaetian Railway line works, because the train is how everyone travels on race day.

05Tiếp cận và tiếp đón

Watching costs nothing and needs no ticket; the course runs through public land and along the valley for its whole length. Entry to the races is by online registration through the organizer, in waves allocated by declared or previous finishing time, with entries opening months ahead and the field capped. The organizer's own website could not be reached from this environment, so no entry fee, cut-off or capacity figure is stated here - consult engadin-skimarathon.ch directly.

06Nơi diễn ra các hoạt động giao lưu

The marathon village at Pontresina during the week; the finish area at S-chanf on the Sunday afternoon; the lake crossings and the Stazerwald for spectators. In the evenings, the hotel bars and restaurants of Pontresina, Samedan and Celerina do more of the work than St. Moritz does, because this is a participants' week rather than a resort one. The valley's cross-country trail network, more than 200 kilometres of it, is the real social space of the days before the race.

07Hướng dẫn di chuyển

Hàng không thương mạiZurich is about three and a half hours by road or four by train; Milan Malpensa and Bergamo are roughly four hours over the Maloja pass; Innsbruck and Munich are longer.
Đường sắtThe best option by a distance. The Rhaetian Railway from Chur reaches St. Moritz in about two hours, and the valley line continues through Celerina, Samedan, Zuoz and S-chanf; Pontresina sits on the Bernina line. Special timetables run on race weekend and the railway is the only sensible way to move along the course.
Xe hơiThe Julier pass from Chur or the Maloja from Italy. Winter tires are required, and the Vereina car train from Klosters is the alternative. Valley roads are closed in sections on race Sunday and parking at Maloja and S-chanf is heavily restricted - do not plan to drive to either end.
hàng không tư nhânSamedan (Engadin Airport) is in the middle of the course, and the race route runs along its runway; expect restrictions on race day. Zurich, Milan Linate and Innsbruck are the alternatives.
Trực thăngHelicopter operations into Samedan are established for the valley but subject to the same race-day constraints.

08Thông tin thực tiễn

Trang phụcRace clothing for participants; for spectators, proper winter kit and boots with grip, because the best viewing is on the frozen lakes and in the shade of the Stazerwald, and March sun at 1,800 metres burns while the air stays cold. Sunglasses and sunscreen are not optional on a lake crossing.
Thời tiếtThe second week of March in the Upper Engadin typically gives daytime highs around 2 to 6C in the sun and overnight lows near minus 10 to minus 14C, with the valley floor holding cold air and the snow surface fast in the morning and softening by afternoon. The Engadin is one of the driest and sunniest valleys in the Alps, and the race has been run in strong sun and in blizzards.
Di chuyển trong khu vựcUse the Rhaetian Railway. Road closures, wave starts at one end of a valley and a finish at the other make the train the only reliable way to move on the Sunday, and most hotels issue a guest card that covers local transport.
Khách sạnMarch is easier and cheaper than January and February in the Engadin, but Marathon Week itself absorbs a large share of the valley's beds and the villages nearest the start and finish fill first. Three to four months' notice is normally enough; club groups book much earlier.
Nhà hàngPontresina, Samedan and Celerina carry the week's eating and take bookings without much difficulty outside the Saturday evening, which is the busiest night. On race day, catering along the course and at the finish is basic and functional. The valley's own cooking is better found in the villages than in the resort centre.
Thời điểm đặt chỗRace entry opens months ahead and the earlier waves fill first. Hotels in Pontresina and the finish-end villages should be held three to four months before; the rest of the valley holds availability later.
VéThere is no spectator ticket. Participation is by registration with the organizer; entry fees, categories and the field cap are published on the organizer's site, which could not be read from this environment and is not quoted here.
Tiếp đónThis is a participation event with no significant hospitality programme. The marathon village at Pontresina and the finish area at S-chanf are open to everyone. Sponsor presence is modest by the standards of the Engadin's winter fixtures.

09Lịch sử

The first race was run in 1969 with 945 participants, on the natural snow of the valley floor, and grew through the 1970s and 1980s into a European mass event as touring and skating spread through cross-country skiing. It has been part of Worldloppet since that series began, which brings a standing international field alongside the Swiss and German majority. The course has been essentially the same for decades: what has changed is scale, timing infrastructure and the wave-start system needed to move a field of this size out of a village at the head of a valley.

10Ai có mặt ở đây

Cross-country skiers above all - Swiss and German in the majority, with entries from more than sixty nations, ranging from elite Worldloppet racers to first-timers, and a very large contingent of clubs and families. Spectators are the valley's own residents and the participants' families. This is not a corporate or brand-driven fixture and it does not pretend to be.
