Edinburgh in August is not one festival but a stack of them running in the same streets at the same time, and the two that matter most operate on opposite principles. The Edinburgh International Festival is invited and programmed: a director selects roughly a hundred productions of music, opera, theatre and dance from around the world and puts them into the city's proper theatres and concert halls - the Usher Hall, the Festival Theatre, the King's, the Lyceum, the Queen's Hall. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the opposite: nobody selects anything. Any performer who can find a venue and register may appear, which is why the Fringe programme runs to thousands of shows in hundreds of rooms - theatres, church halls, function rooms, cellars, the back of pubs, and purpose-built temporary structures in Bristo Square and George Square.

The practical effect is a city with more performance per square mile than anywhere else on earth for twenty-five days. The Royal Mile is given over to street performance and flyering; the Cowgate, the Pleasance, Underbelly and the Assembly complexes run shows from ten in the morning until four the next morning; the Usher Hall fills at eight with an orchestra that played Salzburg the week before.

Alongside them run the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the Art Festival across the city's galleries, and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on the castle esplanade, each with its own organization and its own tickets. Together they roughly double the population of the city.

01重要な理由

The Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world and the principal marketplace for English-language comedy and new theatre: careers begin here, work made here transfers to London and New York, and the industry attends in force in the first fortnight. The International Festival supplies the other half of the argument - it is where the orchestras, opera companies and international theatre-makers touring the European summer make their British stop, and its programming has real weight. In our reading, what distinguishes Edinburgh from every other festival in this calendar is that its central mechanism is open. There is no jury, no invitation and no selection for the Fringe; the barrier is money and stamina rather than approval, which is both its founding virtue and its recurring problem, since the cost of mounting a Fringe run and finding a bed in August has risen faster than the returns. For a visitor the consequence is that Edinburgh is the least gate-kept event of the international season: a large share of the programme costs less than a cinema ticket and some of it is free.

02前後の週

August turns Edinburgh into a different city. The Old Town from the Castle down the Royal Mile to Holyrood is effectively pedestrian and packed from noon to midnight; George Square, Bristo Square and the Meadows carry temporary venues, bars and marquees; the New Town is quieter but its restaurants are full. Traffic in the centre is slow and the buses divert. The first fortnight is the industry period, when the awards are judged and the producers, agents and programmers are in town; the second is broader and more relaxed. The Tattoo on the castle esplanade runs most evenings and adds its own crowd movement at half past ten. Two things are worth knowing. First, the whole calendar of Scottish August sits inside this - the Book Festival, the Art Festival and the film festival all run concurrently. Second, the city empties abruptly: on the first of September the venues come down and Edinburgh is a quiet capital again within a week.

03到着時期

Four or five nights is the minimum that makes sense; three is a frustrating sample. Come in the second week if you want the International Festival's best-attended concerts and a Fringe programme that has settled and been reviewed, or in the first if you want to see things before anyone has decided about them. Weekends are the busiest and the hardest for tickets and tables. Build in a morning off - the pace defeats people who try to see five shows a day for a week - and use it for Arthur's Seat, the Water of Leith or the National Galleries, all of which are free and empty at nine in the morning.

04宿泊先

The Old Town around the Royal Mile, the Grassmarket and Southside puts you inside the Fringe and within walking distance of nearly every venue, at the cost of noise until the small hours. The New Town, north of Princes Street, is ten to twenty minutes' walk, quieter, and where most of the city's hotels are - George Street, Charlotte Square and the Balmoral at the east end of Princes Street are the landmarks. Stockbridge and Bruntsfield are residential, pleasant and twenty to thirty minutes on foot. Leith, on the water two miles north, has grown a serious restaurant scene and is a short tram or bus ride. In August, availability rather than preference usually decides: much of the city's short-let stock is taken by performers and companies for the month, and prices across all categories rise sharply.

05アクセスとホスピタリティ

The two festivals sell separately. The International Festival publishes its programme and opens booking in the spring through its own box office, with priority for its members and friends; the Fringe publishes its programme in June and sells through the Festival Fringe Society's site and box office, with most venues also selling directly at the door. Fringe pricing runs from free upward - the Free Fringe and pay-what-you-want strands are a substantial part of the programme - and a large majority of shows can be booked on the day. The International Festival's opening events and its cheapest concert seats are the accessible end of that programme. Neither organization runs a hospitality tier in the sense used elsewhere in this calendar; the International Festival has patron and friends schemes with priority booking and receptions, and the Fringe Society has a supporters programme. No prices are quoted here because the 2027 programmes had not been published.

06社交活動の場

The Royal Mile between noon and six is the public heart of the Fringe: street performance, flyering and queues, free to anyone standing on it. The venue courtyards are the social centres after dark - the Pleasance Courtyard, the Underbelly and Assembly bars at George Square and Bristo Square, and the late bar at the Traverse, which is where the theatre industry drinks. In the Old Town, the Cowgate and the Grassmarket run late; in the New Town, the George Street bars and hotel lounges take the International Festival crowd after concerts. Nothing about any of this requires an invitation, and the courtyards are the reason people who have no tickets at all still come to Edinburgh in August.

07アクセス方法

民間航空Edinburgh Airport is eight miles west of the centre, about 30 minutes by tram directly to Princes Street or 25 minutes by taxi outside peak hours. Glasgow is an hour away and is a workable alternative.
鉄道Waverley station sits in the valley between the Old and New Towns, a few minutes' walk from most venues; Haymarket is the western station. London King's Cross is four and a half hours by LNER, Glasgow 50 minutes, Newcastle 90 minutes. Rail is the sensible arrival from anywhere in Britain and trains in August are heavily booked.
車The city centre is a poor place for a car in August: low-emission and pedestrian zones, expensive scarce parking and closed streets. The A1, A702 and M8/M9 all reach Edinburgh; park on the edge and use the tram or bus.
プライベート航空Edinburgh Airport handles business aviation through its own facility; Glasgow, Dundee and Cumbernauld are alternatives. Demand rises through August.
マリーナPort Edgar at South Queensferry and Granton harbour are the leisure moorings on the Forth, both twenty to thirty minutes from the centre; Leith is a commercial port and cruise call. Arriving by sea is unusual.

08実用情報

服装None, anywhere. The Fringe is jeans and a waterproof and nobody dresses for anything. International Festival evening concerts and opera at the Usher Hall and the Festival Theatre draw jackets and dresses without any requirement, and a suit will never look out of place there. The genuine advice is practical: Edinburgh in August is cool, wet and windy as often as not, venues are hot and airless, and most people walk five to ten miles a day between shows. Layers and comfortable shoes matter more than anything else.
天気August in Edinburgh typically brings daytime highs around 18 to 19C and overnight lows near 11C, with roughly 70 to 80 mm of rain across the month and frequent wind off the Forth. It is one of the cooler Augusts in Europe. Rain is intermittent rather than continuous, and the queues for most Fringe venues are outdoors.
市内での移動Walk. Almost every venue in the Old Town and Southside is within twenty minutes of another, and the Fringe's own scheduling assumes it. The tram runs from the airport along Princes Street to Leith and the buses are frequent, but traffic in the centre is slow in August. Taxis are scarce between eleven and one at night when the venues empty. Allow far more time between shows than the programme's running times suggest - a 45-minute gap across the city is not enough.
ホテルThe hardest month of the year in Edinburgh. Hotel rates multiply, much of the short-let stock is taken by companies for the whole of August, and availability in the centre thins from the spring onward. Book by February or March for a central room; by May, expect to be in Leith, Newington, Corstorphine or further out, all of which are perfectly workable. Performers routinely share flats for the month, which is part of why the market is what it is.
レストランRestaurant capacity in the centre is well short of August demand and the kitchens run at full stretch from noon to midnight. Book, and book early sittings or late ones - between six and eight is the impossible window because everyone is trying to eat before a show. The New Town, Stockbridge and Leith are easier than the Old Town and worth the walk. Venue courtyards and the street-food stands at the temporary sites handle the rest, and are what most people actually eat.
予約時期Hotels in February or March for August. International Festival tickets from the spring, with the marquee orchestral and opera nights going first. Fringe tickets from June, though the great majority of shows can be booked the same day and many are pay-what-you-want. Restaurant tables two to four weeks ahead for the centre.
チケットSold separately by each festival. The International Festival's programme is announced and goes on sale in the spring through its own box office, with member priority; the Fringe programme is published in June and sold through the Festival Fringe Society and by individual venues, with a large free and pay-what-you-want strand and same-day availability across most of the programme. The Book Festival, Art Festival and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo are separate organizations with their own ticketing; the Tattoo is the hardest of them and sells months ahead. No prices are stated: the 2027 programmes were not published when this record was written.
ホスピタリティThe International Festival runs friends, patrons and corporate partner schemes carrying priority booking and receptions, published on its own site. The Fringe Society has a supporters programme rather than a hospitality tier. Venue operators sell their own memberships giving priority booking and access to their courtyard bars. There is no hospitality package that covers the festivals as a whole, and any offer claiming to should be treated with caution.

09沿革

The International Festival was founded in 1947 by Rudolf Bing, then general manager of Glyndebourne, with civic backers who wanted a European cultural gathering in a city that had not been bombed, at a moment when Salzburg and much of the continent lay in ruins. Eight theatre companies who had not been invited turned up anyway and performed on the edges of it; the critic Robert Kemp called them the festival's fringe the following year and the name stuck. The Festival Fringe Society was formed in 1958 to publish a programme and sell tickets without ever selecting who appeared - the open-access constitution that still governs it. The Fringe overtook the International Festival in scale during the 1980s as comedy became its dominant form and the large venue operators built their multi-room complexes. The Book Festival followed in 1983, the Art Festival in 2004. The Fringe's 80th edition falls in 2027.

10参加者

Performers and companies, who number in the tens of thousands and are a large part of the August population; the comedy and theatre industry - agents, producers, broadcasters, programmers and critics - concentrated in the first fortnight; the International Festival's own audience of concert and opera-goers, older and more international; students and young audiences, for whom the Fringe is affordable in a way almost nothing else in this calendar is; and a very large general public from across Britain and abroad. It is the broadest and least stratified audience of any event in the international season.
