· 31st running Expected · Meydan Racecourse

One evening at Meydan in late March: nine races, a US$12 million main event, and the richest night of racing anywhere.

An event page tells you when it happens (with how sure we are of the date), why it matters, how the week around it feels, when to arrive and leave, where people stay, how access works, and which events come before and after it on the circuit.

Dates · 31st running ExpectedThe Dubai Racing Club had not published a 2027 date when checked on 6 September 2026. The race has been fixed to the last Saturday in March for most of its history, which puts 2027 on Saturday 27 March; the club normally confirms the date and the full carnival calendar in the autumn, alongside the opening of the Dubai Racing Carnival in November. Ramadan's movement through the calendar has caused the date to shift in some years, so this estimate needs re-checking.

The Dubai World Cup is run over 2,000 metres on dirt at Meydan Racecourse, on the southeastern edge of Dubai, on the last Saturday of March. It carries a purse of US$12 million and closes a card whose combined prize money makes the evening the richest single programme in world racing. The rest of the night is not filler: the Dubai Sheema Classic and the Dubai Turf are among the best middle-distance turf races staged anywhere, the Golden Shaheen is a world sprint championship, and the UAE Derby is a recognized route to Louisville.

The format is unlike anything in Europe or America. Racing runs under lights from late afternoon to the World Cup close to midnight, in front of a grandstand more than a kilometre long with a hotel built into it. There is no betting — wagering is not permitted in the UAE, so the Dubai Racing Club runs free prediction competitions instead, and alcohol is served only in licensed areas. Meydan runs the Dubai Racing Carnival from November through March, so by the last Saturday most runners have been in the country for weeks.

01Why it matters

The Dubai World Cup invented the model that Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and Japan have since followed: use prize money to pull the world's best horses to a place with no racing tradition, in a month when the northern and southern seasons overlap. In our reading its distinguishing feature is the absence of betting: strip out the wagering economy and what remains is an evening built entirely around presentation, hospitality and the horses.

02The week around it

Late March is the end of Dubai's outdoor season and World Cup night sits inside a crowded fortnight — the emirate's art, design and business calendars run in the same weeks and hotel occupancy is at its annual peak. The Carnival meetings through February and March are open, cheap and lightly attended by comparison, and the best way to see the course.

03When to arrive

Arrive Thursday or Friday. The Dubai working week means Friday evening is the city's own night out and Saturday is the racing. Gates open in the late afternoon and the World Cup is near midnight, so plan for a long night. Leave Monday, or stay on for the best weather Dubai gets.

04Where to stay

Downtown Dubai, around the Burj Khalifa, is most central and about twenty minutes from Meydan. The Jumeirah and Madinat coastal strip is the beach option, further out and calmer. The Meydan Hotel is built into the grandstand and suits anyone staying for the whole card without a taxi at one in the morning. Rates are at their annual high in March.

05Access and hospitality

The Dubai Racing Club sells general admission and a wide hospitality programme, publishing a hospitality brochure, an event guide and a millinery look book as downloads each year. Hospitality runs from grandstand seating and lounge packages to trackside boxes and apron restaurants. Because there is no wagering, the club's revenue rests on hospitality, sponsorship and attendance — which shows in how heavily those tiers are marketed.

06Where the social activity happens

The parade ring, the apron in front of the grandstand and the terraces of the Meydan Hotel; the concourse fills between races in a way a betting-driven crowd does not. Off course, the Downtown and DIFC restaurants and the hotel bars along Jumeirah Beach Road; earlier in the week, the Alserkal Avenue galleries and the Design District.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationDubai International (DXB) is twenty minutes from Meydan and one of the world's largest hubs.
RailThe Dubai Metro does not serve Meydan; the nearest Red Line stations are in Downtown, and the club runs shuttles on major nights.
CarMeydan is off Al Meydan Road in Nad Al Sheba, about fifteen minutes from Downtown outside peak. Parking is extensive and heavily used from mid-afternoon.
Private aviationAl Maktoum International at Dubai South is the principal business-aviation field; late March is among the busiest periods in the Gulf.

08Practicalities

DressThe Dubai Racing Club publishes a dress code for World Cup night and enforces it at the gate: smart formal daywear across the enclosures, jackets expected for men in hospitality, and national dress welcomed. Shorts, sportswear, torn denim and beachwear are not admitted. The club publishes a millinery look book each year, and hats are worn widely. The broader UAE convention applies as anywhere public in Dubai: shoulders and knees covered is the standard, worth respecting regardless of the racecourse rules.
WeatherThe last week of March is the best weather of the Dubai year: dry, with daytime highs usually around the low thirties Celsius and evenings warm enough to sit outside. Racing under lights means the temperature drops through the card.
Getting aroundTaxis and ride-hailing are the practical way to and from Meydan; the metro does not reach the course. Departure after the last race is the pressure point, with the whole crowd leaving at once close to midnight.
HotelsMarch is the peak of Dubai's season and the city runs at high occupancy for reasons beyond the racing. The Meydan Hotel sells out first because of its position on the course.
RestaurantsMeydan's on-course dining, sold through the hospitality tiers, is how most people eat on the night. In the city, Downtown and DIFC restaurants take World Cup weekend bookings early.
Reservation timingThe club opens hospitality sales several months ahead and publishes the brochure well before the date; the best boxes and trackside tables go first. Hotels should be booked by the turn of the year.
TicketsGeneral admission and hospitality are sold by the Dubai Racing Club through its own channels, with an event guide and hospitality brochure published as downloads and a telephone sales line. Admission to Carnival meetings from November to March is far cheaper and often free or nominally priced. There is no betting anywhere on course; free-to-enter prediction competitions take its place.
HospitalityThe published programme spans grandstand and lounge packages, trackside boxes, apron restaurants and suites, detailed in an annual brochure with inclusions and pricing published by the club rather than through third parties. There is no membership gate.

09History

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum established the race in 1996 at Nad Al Sheba, with a purse that immediately made it the world's richest and a field headed by Cigar, who won it. It moved to the newly built Meydan in 2010, part of a development including a grandstand hotel and a floodlit track. Meydan's main course was laid with Tapeta from 2010 to 2014; dirt replaced it from 2015, partly because American connections preferred it. The date has occasionally moved to accommodate Ramadan.

10Who is there

Godolphin and the Maktoum racing operations at the center; international owners and trainers who have wintered horses at the Carnival; American dirt connections, Japanese and Hong Kong stables and European turf yards; the Gulf business community; and a broad expatriate and resident public, for whom this is the largest outdoor social occasion of the year.
