The collectible design fair that opens Miami Art Week: twentieth and twenty-first century furniture, lighting and objects, sold as works rather than products.
Design Miami sells design as art. The galleries here deal in historical pieces — postwar Italian and Scandinavian furniture, French mid-century, Brazilian modernism — and in contemporary limited editions made in runs of eight or twelve rather than in factories. Nothing on the stands is a catalogue item, which is what separates this fair from Milan, and prices sit closer to the art market's than to the furniture trade's.
Craig Robins founded it in 2005 as the design counterpart to Art Basel Miami Beach, and the two have run in the same week ever since; the fair was bought by Basic.Space in October 2023. It is not large — Wikipedia records around 28,000 attendees and puts the December 2025 edition at more than eighty exhibitors — and that is deliberate. A visitor can see the whole thing properly in three hours, which almost nothing else in Miami Art Week allows.
The brand commissions are the other half of the proposition. Fashion houses, car makers and drinks companies build pavilions and commission pieces for the fair, and these are the works that end up in the design press. The Design Miami name has since been extended to fairs in Paris in October, Los Angeles, and Seoul, but the December Miami Beach edition remains the parent event and the one tied to Art Basel.
01Perché è rilevante
Miami Art Week is the largest concentration of the art and design trade in the Americas, and Design Miami is the part of it that sets prices for collectible design. For dealers in twentieth-century furniture and for the studios producing limited editions, the December fair is the year's most important selling week, and the results shape what comes to auction in the following spring. It also functions as the moment when the design world and the art world are formally in the same room, which happens less often than the two industries' overlap suggests. In our reading, Design Miami's real advantage is scale: it is small enough to be seen and understood in an afternoon, which in a week defined by exhaustion is worth a great deal.
02La settimana intorno all'evento
Miami Art Week is a citywide event with dozens of fairs and hundreds of openings, and Design Miami is one of its anchors rather than its center. Art Basel Miami Beach fills the convention center next door; the satellite fairs spread across South Beach, the Design District and Wynwood; the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Rubell Museum, the Bass and the Pérez Art Museum Miami all open exhibitions for the week. The Design District itself — Robins's development, twenty minutes north across the causeway — runs its own programme of installations and commissions and is free to walk through. Traffic across the causeways between Tuesday and Sunday is the week's defining practical problem.
03Quando arrivare
Tuesday, for the fair's opening days, before the crowd arrives at the weekend. Design Miami is easiest on Wednesday and Thursday mornings and difficult on Saturday. If Miami Art Week as a whole is the reason for the trip, arrive Monday night and leave Sunday; if Design Miami specifically is, three nights covers it comfortably.
04Dove alloggiare
South Beach puts you within walking distance of both Design Miami and the convention center, which matters more than anything else in a week when a two-mile drive can take forty minutes; the Delano, the Faena and the Setai are the landmarks along that stretch. Mid-Beach is quieter and a short drive. The Design District and the Edgewater and Wynwood side of the bay put you closer to the museums and the satellite programme and further from the fairs. Downtown and Brickell are the value option and are on the far side of the causeway traffic.
05Accesso e ospitalità
Design Miami sells public tickets through its own website, with day passes and multi-day passes; a preview day ahead of the public opening operates on the fair's own invitation list and is not sold. Art Basel Miami Beach ticketing is entirely separate. The satellite fairs each sell their own admission, and the Design District installations and most Wynwood programming are free. The fair publishes no hospitality packages; the dinners and parties that define the week's reputation are private and organized by galleries, brands and collectors rather than by the fair.
06Dove si svolge l'attività sociale
The Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive hotel terraces in South Beach, which are open to anyone with a reservation and function as the week's meeting rooms. The Design District's plazas and its restaurants, which stay open late and are the calmer end of the week. Wynwood, which carries the younger and louder programme. The Faena district and the Bass in Mid-Beach for the museum programme. Everything named here is public. The private side of Miami Art Week is extensive, well reported and not described in this record.

08Aspetti pratici
09Storia
Robins was the developer who rebuilt the Miami Design District, and the fair began as an extension of that project: a way to attach a design market to the art fair that Art Basel had brought to Miami Beach in 2002. It grew through the 2010s from a local satellite into an internationally attended fair with its own European edition, and it introduced the pattern — a design fair paired with an art fair in the same city and week — that has since been copied elsewhere. The 2023 sale to Basic.Space, a digital marketplace, marked a shift in ownership away from the founding circle and was followed by a rapid expansion of the name into Paris, Los Angeles and Seoul and into smaller regional formats.
10Chi è presente
Design galleries and their collectors, interior designers and architects working on private commissions, contemporary art collectors crossing over from Art Basel, the design and shelter press, and the brands that commission work for the fair. The Miami Art Week audience at large — very large, largely local at the weekend, and only partly there for design — passes through as well.
