OrganisateurCouncil of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) · depuis 1980

The CFDA Fashion Awards are the American industry's own prize-giving, run by the council that also organizes New York Fashion Week, and they work as a trade verdict rather than a public vote. The four competitive design categories - American Womenswear, Menswear, Accessory and Emerging Designer of the Year - are decided by the CFDA Fashion Awards Guild, an invitation-only body of member designers, editors, retail executives, stylists and other industry figures; the council publishes the voting window, which for 2026 runs October 7 to 21. Alongside the competitive awards sit a set of named honors, among them the Media Award in honor of Eugenia Sheppard and the Founder's Award in honor of Eleanor Lambert, the publicist who created both the awards' parent organization's ancestor events and New York's first fashion week.

The evening itself is a black-tie dinner and ceremony. Since 2023 it has been held at the American Museum of Natural History, with 2026 the fourth consecutive year there; the 2026 edition is presented by Amazon Fashion, with category and service partners named in the council's announcement and a student viewing section for CFDA scholars and fashion students. The carpet arrivals are the part that reaches the public, and the council releases a film of the evening afterward.

For a reader, the useful distinction is that this is an industry function with a guest list, not a ticketed event. There is no public sale, no hospitality tier, and the council publishes no prices.

01Pourquoi c'est important

These are the awards that move American careers. The emerging designer prize in particular carries money and access through the council's linked funds and programmes, and a win in one of the four design categories is a credential that affects wholesale conversations for the following year. Because the same organization controls the Official New York Fashion Week Schedule, the designer funds and the awards, the CFDA's judgment compounds: the council decides who shows, who is funded and who is honoured.

In our reading the evening matters less as a social occasion than as a signal. It is not an event anyone travels internationally for, and its images circulate far less widely than the Met Gala's six months earlier. What it does is tell the American market which designers the American industry has decided to back, which is a narrower but more consequential message.

02La semaine environnante

Early November in New York belongs to the auction houses. The major fall sales run from about November 9 to 20 in 2026, a week after the awards, and the city's art and collecting audience arrives for those rather than for this. The awards night itself produces no closures beyond the museum's own block of Central Park West, where the carpet is built and the press bank set.

The practical effect on the city is negligible. Upper West Side traffic around 79th Street slows for a few hours, the museum closes early, and that is the extent of it. Anyone in New York that week for other reasons will notice nothing unless they walk past the museum at seven in the evening.

03Quand arriver

Not an event to plan a trip around unless invited. The sensible version of this week for a visitor is to come for the fall auctions the following week and to treat the awards as a date in the calendar rather than a destination. Guests arrive in the late afternoon for a seven o'clock carpet.

04Où séjourner

The Upper West Side around Columbus Avenue and Central Park West is the immediate neighbourhood and is quiet, residential and well supplied with small hotels; it has no particular fashion-industry presence. Most of the industry stays downtown in SoHo and Tribeca or in Midtown, and travels up for the evening. November is a busy month in New York's hotel market because of the auctions and the marathon, so rooms should not be left late, but the awards themselves exert no pressure.

05Accès et hospitalité

Invitation only. The CFDA does not sell tickets, tables or hospitality for the awards, and publishes no prices. Seats are allocated to member designers, nominees and their teams, press, partners and the council's scholars, the last group seated in a designated student section presented by the evening's partners. Press accreditation is handled by the council. What the CFDA does publish, free, is the full nominee and honoree list, the voting timetable and a film of the ceremony afterward.

06Où se déroule l'activité sociale

The public geography is one stretch of pavement on Central Park West outside the museum, where the carpet arrivals can be watched from behind barriers. Everything else is inside. The after-parties are private and are not described here. The museum itself is open to the public in the ordinary way on every other day of the year, and the restaurants and bars of Columbus Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue in the Seventies and Eighties carry the neighbourhood's trade.

07Comment s'y rendre

Aviation commercialeJohn F. Kennedy (JFK), Newark (EWR) and LaGuardia (LGA). LaGuardia is closest to the Upper West Side.
RailPenn Station and Grand Central for Amtrak and commuter services. The B and C subway lines stop at 81st Street directly beneath the museum, and the 1 stops at 79th and Broadway.
VoitureCentral Park West is partly closed outside the museum on the evening of the ceremony and the side streets in the Seventies and Eighties are used for staging. The transverse roads through Central Park at 79th and 86th Streets are the way across town.
Aviation privéeTeterboro (TEB), with Westchester County (HPN) and Morristown (MMU) as alternates.
HélicoptèreThe East 34th Street and Downtown Manhattan heliports handle transfers from the New Jersey fields.

08Informations pratiques

Tenue vestimentaireBlack tie, interpreted by a room full of designers, which in practice means the most varied formal dressing in New York. Guests dress to be photographed on arrival. Early November in New York is cold after dark and the carpet is outdoors, which is the only practical consideration.
MétéoEarly November in New York is cool to cold, with daytime highs usually between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius and evenings close to freezing. No station normals were sourced for this record.
Se déplacerThe B and C subway lines stop under the museum and are the fastest approach. Car arrivals queue on Central Park West from late afternoon. Crosstown traffic through the park at 79th and 86th Streets is slow for about two hours either side of the carpet.
HôtelsThe awards exert no measurable pressure on the hotel market. November in New York is busy for other reasons - the fall auctions, the marathon, the start of the holiday season - and rooms should be booked several weeks ahead on that basis rather than this one.
RestaurantsUpper West Side restaurants near the museum take the early-evening trade and are bookable at short notice. Downtown is unaffected. The after-parties absorb the late evening and are private.
Délais de réservationHotels three to four weeks ahead for early November. Nothing about the awards themselves requires advance arrangement by a visitor.
BilletsNo tickets are sold. The nominee and honoree list, the voting window and the ceremony film are published free on cfda.com. No price is published for any form of access.
HospitalitéNone is sold. Partner organizations - the presenting partner, category sponsors, the beauty and champagne partners and the student-section sponsors named in the council's announcement - host their own guests. The CFDA allocates the rest of the room.

09Historique

The Council of Fashion Designers of America established the awards in 1980 and held the first ceremony in 1982 at the New York Public Library, moving to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1987. The format expanded steadily: a lifetime achievement award from 1984, an emerging-talent prize from 1986, a first international award in 1992, and a first television broadcast in 1999. Corporate partnership arrived in 2002 and has shaped the prize money attached to the emerging categories ever since.

The venue has moved repeatedly - the Metropolitan, Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Museum and the Casa Cipriani among them - before settling at the American Museum of Natural History from 2023. The guild structure, which hands the competitive categories to an invitation-only electorate of well over a thousand industry figures rather than to a small jury, is the element that has changed least and is the reason the results read as an industry consensus.

10Qui s'y trouve

CFDA member designers and their studios, who make up the core of the room; nominees and honorees; American magazine and newspaper editors; department store and retail executives; stylists, model agencies and casting directors; the council's corporate partners and their guests; and a student section of CFDA scholars and fashion students, admitted by the council's partners. Everyone present is there by invitation.
