Film's year runs from Sundance in January, through the Berlinale in February and the Academy Awards in March, to Cannes in May — the festival that is also a fortnight of the Riviera at its most crowded — and then the autumn triangle of Venice, Telluride and Toronto that opens awards season in September, with London in October. Cannes and Venice are the two with a social calendar outside the cinemas: the Croisette and the Lido, the hotel terraces, the parties reported in the trade press. Tribeca in June and Capri, Hollywood at the year's end complete the list.

Screenings at every festival are ticketed to the public in some measure; the red carpets are public spectacle; the parties are not.
