Datums VerwachtNot yet published. Guards Polo Club releases its season fixture list in the spring. The tournament has opened in the third week of May and finished on a Sunday in mid-June in each recent year, and since 2023 the final has fallen on the Sunday immediately before Royal Ascot. Applying that pattern to 2027 gives a final on Sunday 13 June 2027, with league play from about Tuesday 18 May.

The Cartier Queen's Cup is the high-goal tournament that anchors the first half of the English polo season. It is played at 22 goals, the level below the Gold Cup, across the grounds Guards Polo Club keeps at Smith's Lawn and Flemish Farm inside and beside Windsor Great Park. Teams are built around a patron who takes the field alongside hired professionals, a majority of them Argentine, and the draw runs as a group stage over roughly four weeks before quarter-finals, semi-finals and a single Sunday final on the Queen's Ground.

For most of that month the tournament reads as a working sporting fixture rather than a social one. Early-round matches draw a few hundred people to the boards, members walking behind the pony lines, grooms turning out strings of horses between chukkas, and very little ceremony. Finals day changes the register completely. The grandstand fills, the lawns along the Queen's Ground are given over to hospitality, the band plays, and the presentation is made in front of a crowd that has come for the afternoon as much as for the polo.

The game itself is quick to read even for a first-time spectator: six chukkas of seven minutes, a fresh pony for each, penalties struck from marked distances, and the half-time divot stamping in which the crowd walks out onto the field to press back the turf lifted by hooves. It is the one point in the day when the ropes come down and the ground belongs to everyone on it.

01Waarom het relevant is

Britain's high-goal season turns on three trophies - the Queen's Cup at Guards, the Gold Cup for the British Open at Cowdray Park, and the Prince of Wales's Trophy - and the Queen's Cup is the one that sits inside the wider social calendar rather than alongside it. Its final lands in the same mid-June stretch of Berkshire and Surrey that Royal Ascot occupies two days later, and it gathers the patrons, breeders, horse dealers and sponsors who underwrite the sport at its top level. In our reading, its standing rests less on the quality of the polo, which Cowdray matches, than on the address and the continuity: a royal park, a club founded in 1955 whose president is now the King, a cup first presented by Queen Elizabeth II in 1960, and a jeweler whose name has been attached to polo at Smith's Lawn for decades. Very few sporting fixtures in Britain combine that lineage with an afternoon a member of the public can still watch from the boards.

02De week eromheen

Finals weekend arrives at the front end of the busiest fortnight in the southern English calendar. Royal Ascot opens on the Tuesday after, and the two fixtures share a catchment - the same hotels along the A30 and around Windsor, the same helicopters and car services, the same tailoring and millinery appointments in the preceding week. Windsor itself is at full tourist load in June; the Long Walk and the park's public gates are busy from morning, and traffic on the roads around Englefield Green and Egham tightens sharply on the Sunday afternoon. What is genuinely public that week is more than most visitors expect. Windsor Great Park is open, the Savill Garden is at its best, the Royal Windsor Horse Show has already come and gone in May, and the earlier rounds of the Queen's Cup can be watched with little ceremony. The satellite programme around finals day is largely corporate hospitality inside the club grounds rather than anything a passerby would encounter.

03Wanneer aan te komen

Come for the Sunday of the final and the day before it. Saturday gives you the semi-final-round polo without the crowd and enough time to walk the park; Sunday is the full occasion, running through the afternoon to a presentation in the early evening. If Royal Ascot is also on the plan, staying put through the following week makes sense - the drive between the two is under half an hour, and moving base twice in five days is a waste of a good location. Leave on the Monday if the Queen's Cup is the whole trip, since Sunday evening roads out of the park are slow.

04Waar te verblijven

Three areas serve the ground. Windsor and Eton put you five miles from Smith's Lawn with a walkable town, riverside restaurants and a direct train to London; they are also the busiest and least quiet. Ascot, Sunninghill and Sunningdale sit on the other side of the park, closer to golf and to the Royal Ascot grandstands, with Coworth Park as the landmark address on that side and its own polo fields attached. Egham, Englefield Green and the Runnymede stretch of the Thames are the most convenient of all for the club gates - Great Fosters and The Runnymede on Thames are the names people navigate by - and the quietest, at the cost of having very little to do in the evening. Cliveden, further out at Taplow, is the choice for people treating the weekend as a country stay rather than a sporting one. Anyone who would rather have London at night can stay in town and drive out, which many do; the trade-off is an hour each way and no margin if the final runs long.

05Toegang en hospitality

Guards Polo Club publishes ticketing and hospitality arrangements for the Cartier Queen's Cup on its own site each spring, and that page is the only reliable source for what is on sale in a given year. In broad structure, the tournament's earlier rounds are the accessible part: matches across the club's grounds through late May and early June are watched from the boards by members, families and passersby, and the atmosphere is close to that of a large country club at work. Finals day is the ticketed occasion, with grandstand seating, car passes for the enclosure and lawn, and hospitality packages sold through the club and through accredited agents. Club membership is the route to the members' enclosure and the clubhouse; day access to the hospitality marquees is bought. No price or capacity figure is given here because the club's booking pages could not be retrieved directly for this entry.

06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt

The public center of gravity on finals day is the lawn along the Queen's Ground and the boards on the far side, where families set up for the afternoon and the divot stamping brings everyone onto the turf at half-time. Away from the club, the week's activity spreads along the Thames at Windsor and Datchet, into the pubs and dining rooms of Englefield Green and Old Windsor, and up to the Ascot high street once Royal Ascot week begins. Windsor's riverside terraces and the hotel bars at Great Fosters, Coworth Park and Cliveden are where the weekend's conversation happens in public view. In London, the Sunday evening pull is back to Chelsea and Belgravia; the polo crowd does not colonize a single quarter the way the Henley or Cowes crowds do.

07Hoe u er komt

Commerciële luchtvaartLondon Heathrow is roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road from Windsor Great Park and is the practical arrival airport for almost everyone flying in. Gatwick is about an hour and fifteen minutes, and both London City and Southampton are workable alternatives for regional connections.
TreinEgham and Virginia Water on the Reading-Waterloo line are the closest stations to the club, roughly ten minutes by taxi from the gates. Windsor and Eton Riverside runs to London Waterloo, and Windsor and Eton Central connects to Paddington via Slough. Ascot station serves the far side of the park. None of them is walking distance to Smith's Lawn.
AutoThe M25 at junction 13 and the M3 at junction 3 both feed the park within fifteen minutes. Parking on finals day is by pass through the club; the surrounding lanes at Englefield Green and Wick Road are narrow and controlled, and traffic backs up for an hour after the presentation.
PrivéluchtvaartFarnborough is the closest dedicated business-aviation airport at around 40 minutes; Luton, Biggin Hill and Northolt are the other usual choices for the London area. Heathrow handles business aviation but with slot and handling constraints during a busy summer.

08Praktische informatie

DresscodeThe club sets a dress code for its enclosures on finals day: jacket and collared shirt for men in the members' and hospitality areas, ties usual though not universal, and smart summer dress for women. Hats are common but nothing like compulsory - this is not Ascot. Flat or block heels are the sensible choice because the divot stamping puts everyone on grass. On the public side of the boards and during the earlier rounds, ordinary summer clothes are entirely normal.
WeerMid-June in Berkshire typically brings daytime highs around 20 to 22C and overnight lows near 11C, with long daylight and a real chance of showers - June averages roughly 50 to 60 mm of rain spread across the month. Play continues in rain unless the ground is unsafe. Bring a layer for the evening presentation, which happens after the sun has dropped behind the tree line.
Verplaatsing ter plaatseThere is no useful public transport to the club gates; every route ends in a taxi or a car. Ride-hailing coverage around Englefield Green thins out badly at the end of finals day, so a pre-booked return car is worth arranging. If Royal Ascot follows in the same week, the same driver and the same base will serve both.
HotelsThe Windsor and Ascot hotel stock is small relative to demand and is absorbed by Royal Ascot week, which begins two days after the polo final. Rooms for the combined stretch go months ahead, and rates on the Ascot side rise sharply for it. For the polo weekend alone, a few weeks' notice is usually enough outside the Ascot overlap; for both, treat it as a spring booking.
RestaurantsWindsor and Bray, a short drive away, carry the area's serious kitchens, and the Bray restaurants in particular book out far ahead in June. Around the park, the pubs at Englefield Green, Old Windsor and Winkfield handle most of the weekend's eating. On finals day itself, food inside the club is either hospitality catering or picnics brought to the boards, which is a long-standing habit here.
ReserveringstimingHospitality for the final is sold from the spring and the better positions on the lawn go first. Hotels within twenty minutes of the park should be held by March if the trip extends into Royal Ascot week, and by May otherwise. Bray restaurant tables are the hardest single reservation in the area and are worth booking as soon as the final date is published.
TicketsAdmission to finals day is sold by Guards Polo Club, with grandstand seats, ground and car-park entry, and hospitality packages as separate tiers. Earlier tournament days are far more open and are the low-cost way to see high-goal polo at Smith's Lawn. Consult the club's own tournament page for the current year's arrangements; this entry states no prices because the club's booking pages could not be read directly.
HospitalityThe club runs clubhouse and marquee hospitality along the Queen's Ground on finals day, and accredited agents resell packages. Cartier, as title sponsor, hosts its own guests. Nothing about the sponsor's programme is published as available to the public, and it should not be assumed to be purchasable.

09Geschiedenis

Guards Polo Club was founded in January 1955 with Prince Philip as its president, on ground made available in Windsor Great Park. Queen Elizabeth II presented the first Queen's Cup in 1960, and for its early decades the tournament sat within a club season shaped by regimental and services polo. The arrival of overseas patrons from the 1970s onward - first from the Americas, later from the Gulf, with the Dubai team among the most successful of the modern era - pushed the handicap level up and turned the top of the British game professional, with Argentine ten-goalers hired for the four-week campaign. Adolfo Cambiaso has won the cup ten times, more than any other player. Prince Philip remained president until his death in 2021; King Charles III accepted the role in May 2024, having played at Smith's Lawn himself and won the cup with Les Diables Bleus in 1986. The tournament kept its name after Queen Elizabeth II's death in 2022: the trophy she gave still carries her title, and the club continues to bill it as the Cartier Queen's Cup.

10Wie is er

Team patrons and their families, professional players and the grooms and horse dealers who work around them, club members from the Guards' large membership base, sponsors' guests and brand hospitality, a substantial contingent of British country and services families with long ties to the club, and a general Sunday crowd from Windsor, Surrey and southwest London who come for the afternoon rather than the sport. The overseas element is concentrated among patrons and their entourages, particularly from Argentina, the Gulf and the United States.
