Capri, Hollywood International Film Festival

Historical pattern

A week of screenings and awards on Capri across the turn of the year, closing the film calendar as the Oscar season opens.

An event page tells you when it happens (with how sure we are of the date), why it matters, how the week around it feels, when to arrive and leave, where people stay, how access works, and which events come before and after it on the circuit.

Dates Historical patternDates for the edition spanning the turn of 2026 into 2027 were not published anywhere this record could reach. The organizer's site could not be fetched (see editorial notes) and the festival announces late. The window given here is the festival's settled placement, described on its own submission listing as running from 26 December to 2 January, and matches the pattern Wikipedia records of an edition held every late December or early January. Treat the exact opening and closing days as unconfirmed. Historical patternNot announced, and two years out it will not be for some time. Same basis as the 2026 entry: the festival's recurring late-December-to-New-Year window, projected forward. An editor should replace both entries with organizer-published dates as soon as the festival's own site can be read.

OrganizerCapri in the World Institute, founded by Pascal Vicedomini · since 1995

Capri, Hollywood is the film calendar's last event and its oddest. It was founded in 1995 by the Italian journalist Pascal Vicedomini and is run by the Capri in the World Institute, under the patronage of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean and with support from the Italian culture ministry. It takes place on Capri across the turn of the year, in the one week of the island's calendar when almost nothing else is happening, and it screens more than 200 films a year across feature, medium-length and short categories.

The structure is a jury festival rather than a market or a competition in the Cannes sense. Entries are divided into International and Italian sections, with international films required not to have shown at other local festivals, and a jury board decides awards across picture, direction, performance, cinematography, screenplay and the technical crafts. Recent best-picture awards went to Oppenheimer, Emilia Pérez and Frankenstein in successive years, which gives a fair indication of what the jury is looking at: the films already in contention for the following March's Academy Awards. The Hollywood Reporter has characterized it as the last major film festival of the year and a stop on the road to the Oscars; Variety has described its position on the circuit as a distinctive one.

What it is not is a festival you should plan a holiday around without checking first. Capri between Christmas and Epiphany is a winter island: a large proportion of its hotels, restaurants and shops close from November until spring, the ferry timetable is thinned and weather-dependent, and the island's population drops to the few thousand who live there. That emptiness is exactly what makes the festival possible in this place at this time, and it is also the practical problem facing any visitor.

01Why it matters

Its significance is positional and seasonal rather than competitive. Falling in the last days of December and the first of January, it sits between the Academy's December shortlists and the Golden Globes ten days later, which makes it the year's final public gathering of people campaigning films — and one of very few reasons anyone flies into Naples in the last week of December. For the Italian film industry it is a meaningful annual fixture, and the award carries real weight domestically.

In our reading Capri, Hollywood matters most as a seasonal marker in the calendar rather than as a festival in its own right. It is the bridge between the festive season and the awards season: the film world's last gathering of one year and, in effect, the first of the next. Its influence on outcomes is slight; its usefulness as a fixed point in a thin fortnight of the international calendar is considerable. Anyone reading the season as a shape rather than as a list should note that the film year closes on an Italian island and reopens in Beverly Hills nine days later.

02The week around it

The island in late December is the opposite of the Capri people picture. The Piazzetta is open but quiet, the Via Camerelle shops are mostly shuttered, the bathing establishments and beach clubs are closed, and the walk up to the Villa Jovis or along the Pizzolungo is at its best precisely because nobody is on it. The festival supplies the only concentration of people, press and cars on the island that week.

The wider regional context is the Italian festive calendar. Naples across the bay is in its most animated week of the year, with the Christmas markets of Via San Gregorio Armeno, the churches' nativity scenes and an exceptional New Year's Eve on the waterfront; Sorrento and the Amalfi towns are quiet and partly closed. For a visitor the sensible reading is that the festival is a reason to be in the Bay of Naples rather than a reason to be marooned on Capri, and that the ferry timetable determines which of those you end up with.

03When to arrive

Come after Christmas and leave after the New Year, which is the festival's own shape. Arriving on or about December 27 and departing January 3 covers the programme. Build in a buffer day at either end: winter crossings to Capri are cancelled in heavy weather more often than visitors expect, and being stuck on the island or on the mainland for a day is a normal outcome rather than bad luck.

04Where to stay

This is the question to settle before anything else, because most of Capri's accommodation is shut in winter. Capri town, around the Piazzetta and along the Via Camerelle and Via Tragara, holds the grand hotels the island is known for, and the majority of them close from November; the handful that stay open take the festival. Anacapri, higher and quieter, has smaller and more practical places and a few that operate year-round. Marina Grande, by the port, is the least attractive and the most useful in bad weather. The serious alternative is to stay on the mainland — Naples for the city and the airport, Sorrento for proximity and a short crossing — and take the hydrofoil across for screenings, accepting that a cancelled return is a real possibility. Confirm winter opening directly with any property before booking.

05Access and hospitality

The festival's public-access structure could not be established for this record, and it would be wrong to guess at it. What is clear from the organizer's published description is that this is a jury festival with an entry and submission process for filmmakers, an International and an Italian section, and an awards programme; what is not clear is whether, or how, screenings are sold or opened to the public on the island. The organizer publishes submission terms through its own channels and a festival-submission platform. Anyone intending to attend should contact the Capri in the World Institute directly, and should treat any third-party offer of festival access or hospitality with caution.

06Where the social activity happens

On Capri in winter the public geography collapses to a few hundred metres. The Piazzetta — the Piazza Umberto I — and the cafés around it are the island's single social room, and in the last week of December they are where everyone who is on the island ends up. The Via Camerelle and Via Vittorio Emanuele carry what remains open. Marina Grande's bars work around the ferry timetable. In Anacapri, the Piazza Vittoria and the route to the Monte Solaro chairlift are the equivalent. Reporting describes receptions and dinners attached to the festival in island hotels; none of that is open to visitors, and the hotels hosting it are among the few open at all.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationNaples Capodichino (NAP) is the gateway, about 30 to 45 minutes by road from the Naples ferry terminals. Rome's airports are a little over two hours away by rail and sea combined in good conditions, and considerably more in bad.
RailHigh-speed services reach Napoli Centrale from Rome in about an hour and ten minutes and from Milan in under five. From the station the ferry terminals at Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa are 15 to 25 minutes away; the Circumvesuviana line serves Sorrento for the shorter crossing.
CarCapri is effectively closed to visitors' cars, and in any case there is nowhere to take one. Cars are left on the mainland, in the garages around the Naples and Sorrento ports. Driving is relevant only to reaching the ferry.
Private aviationNaples Capodichino handles business aviation for the bay; Salerno Costa d'Amalfi and Rome Ciampino are the alternatives. Onward travel is still by sea or helicopter.
HelicopterOn-demand helicopter transfers operate between Naples and the helipad above Anacapri, which in winter is the one arrival route that is not at the mercy of sea state - though it has its own weather limits.
MarinasMarina Grande is the island's commercial and visiting harbour and Marina Piccola is seasonal and exposed. Winter berthing on Capri is limited and the harbour is poorly sheltered in a northerly; most visiting vessels stay on the mainland in that season.

08Practicalities

DressItalian winter formality: a good coat, and something reasonably formal for the award evenings, which are indoor events in hotels rather than red carpets on a street. Otherwise the island in late December asks for warm layers, a waterproof and shoes that handle wet stone steps, of which Capri has a great many.
WeatherLate December on Capri is mild by northern European standards and genuinely wet: daytime highs typically around 13 to 15 degrees Celsius, nights near 9 or 10, frequent rain, and the winter sea states in the Bay of Naples that cause hydrofoil and ferry cancellations. Clear winter days on the island are exceptional and the light is the best of the year. No station normals were sourced for this record, so the summary is qualitative.
Getting aroundEverything on Capri is walking, the funicular from Marina Grande to the Piazzetta, the island buses to Anacapri, or an open taxi. Nothing is far and nothing is flat. The variable that matters is the crossing: hydrofoils from Naples take 45 to 50 minutes and car ferries from Naples and Sorrento rather longer, and winter schedules are reduced, with sailings cancelled at short notice in rough weather. Check the operators' notices the evening before any crossing.
HotelsThe binding constraint is not demand but supply: most of Capri shuts for the winter, so the small number of properties open across the New Year are taken early, partly by the festival itself. Rates are far below the summer levels and availability is nonetheless thin. Always confirm that a property is open for the dates before booking anything else.
RestaurantsA minority of Capri's restaurants trade through the winter and those that do are busy over the New Year and keep shorter hours. Book, and ask about opening when you do. Anacapri has a slightly better year-round offer than Capri town. Naples, across the water, is unaffected and at its best in that week.
Reservation timingBecause so little is open, accommodation for the New Year on Capri should be arranged in the autumn rather than left late, and restaurant tables want a week or two. Ferry tickets can be bought close to travel, but the timetable itself should be checked as soon as dates are fixed.
TicketsNot established. No ticketing or public-screening information for this festival could be verified from a source this record was able to reach, and nothing is invented here. Prospective attendees should approach the Capri in the World Institute directly. Film submissions are handled through the festival's own entry process and a submission platform.
HospitalityNo published hospitality programme was found. The festival is supported by the Italian culture ministry and by commercial partners, and its receptions run on the organizer's own invitations. Nothing appears to be sold to visitors, and anything offered as purchasable access should be verified with the organizer before money changes hands.

09History

The festival was founded in 1995 as a project of the Capri in the World Institute, an organization built around the island's long-standing relationship with international visitors and its particular hold on American cultural imagination. The choice of the last week of December was deliberate and has never changed: the island is empty, the industry's year is over, and the Oscar race is at the point where a sympathetic jury's attention is worth having.

The only substantial interruption to that pattern came with the pandemic, when the festival extended beyond the island and held a virtual edition. How much of that dispersal persisted is not clear from the sources available for this record, and whether the current programme still runs wholly on Capri should be checked before anyone travels on the strength of it.

10Who is there

Italian and international film industry figures, producers and directors attending on the festival's invitation; the jury board; Italian cultural institutions and the ministry that supports the festival; a substantial Italian press contingent for whom this is a fixed late-December assignment; and American trade press and publicists treating it as an Oscar-season appearance. The local audience is small, because the island's winter population is small.
