Cannes is two events sharing one building. Upstairs is the Official Selection, announced in April by general delegate Thierry Frémaux: around twenty films in Competition for the Palme d'Or, Un Certain Regard for work with a less conventional shape, Out of Competition and Cannes Premiere for films that want the platform without the contest, Midnight Screenings, Cannes Classics for restorations, and La Cinef for student shorts. Three parallel selections run alongside under separate management and are not the festival's to program: the Quinzaine des Cinéastes, or Directors' Fortnight, founded by French directors in 1969; the Semaine de la Critique, run by film critics since 1962; and ACID. Downstairs and along the Pantiero is the Marché du Film, begun in 1959 and now the busiest film market in the world, where rights are bought, financing is assembled and country pavilions line the waterfront in temporary tents.

The Palais des Festivals sits at the western end of the Croisette, a heavy 1982 building with eighteen auditoriums; the Grand Théâtre Lumière seats roughly 2,300 and its red-carpeted steps are the reason the barriers along the boulevard fill by mid-afternoon. Gala screenings at 7:00 and 10:00 in the evening are black tie and are the only moments the festival looks the way the pictures suggest. For the rest of the day the Palais is a working building: badge queues, screening rooms running from 8:30 in the morning, and people reading schedules on the steps.

What a visitor actually experiences depends on a plastic badge. Accreditation is granted by category — press, industry, market, cinephile — and each color opens different doors and different queue priorities. Without one, Cannes is still legible: the Cinéma de la Plage screens a free open-air program on Macé beach most evenings, the barriers along the Croisette are public, the Marché's pavilion village is visible from the promenade, and the town's own cinemas run Cannes Cinéphiles screenings for local audiences. The festival also issues a free Trois Jours à Cannes pass to applicants aged 18 to 28, which admits them to Official Selection screenings for the closing three days.

01Por qué es relevante

No other festival combines a competition of this standing with a market of this size. A Palme d'Or reorders a director's career and a film's distribution in fifty countries at once; a Marché screening at eight in the morning decides whether a film gets made at all. The selection is the year's most closely watched act of editorial judgment in cinema, and the reaction inside the Lumière — the length of the standing ovation, reported to the minute by the trade press — has become a metric in its own right.

In our reading, Cannes matters to the wider calendar for a second reason that has little to do with film. It is the moment the Riviera season begins. Brands, watch houses and drinks companies stage their first large Mediterranean programs of the year here, charter yachts fill the bay off the Croisette, and Monaco's Grand Prix follows within a fortnight. For a great many people who travel through the south of France in summer, the second half of May is simply when the coast switches on, and Cannes is the switch.

02La semana en torno al evento

Cannes in festival fortnight is a town given over to one activity. The Croisette's seaward side fills with temporary brand pavilions and beach-club takeovers; the landward side is fenced for the red carpet, and crossing the boulevard near the Palais can take twenty minutes in the early evening. Traffic on the Boulevard de la Croisette is restricted around gala times, the Rue d'Antibes behind it becomes the working shortcut, and the bay fills with chartered yachts, some serving as floating offices for sales companies. The Vieux Port is closed to casual mooring for the duration.

The surrounding program is dense and much of it is public. Cinéma de la Plage's nightly open-air screenings on the beach are free and take a real local audience; Cannes Cinéphiles gives residents and film-society members access to Official Selection titles in cinemas around town; and the Marché's International Village of national pavilions, though badge-only inside, animates the whole seafront. Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, Mougins and Cap d'Antibes absorb the overflow, and a number of the fortnight's better-known evening events happen outside Cannes altogether, at Cap d'Antibes and along the coast toward Nice.

03Cuándo llegar

For the market, the first Wednesday through the second Monday is the working core; deals move in the first five days and the Palais thins noticeably after the middle weekend. For the Official Selection, the opening Tuesday and the first weekend carry the largest premieres, and the second weekend belongs to awards and repeat screenings. Arriving on the Monday before opening is the difference between a functioning first day and a lost one, because badge collection, apartment keys and the Nice airport transfer all take longer than expected. Departing on the second Sunday, after the Saturday closing ceremony and the Sunday replay of the prize winners, avoids the worst of the outbound crush at Nice.

04Dónde alojarse

The Croisette hotels put you within walking distance of every screening and every queue, and they price accordingly: the Carlton, the Martinez and the Majestic are the landmarks the industry uses as meeting points, and the Palais is at most a fifteen-minute walk from any of them. Behind the Croisette, the streets around the Rue d'Antibes and the Rue Hoche hold smaller hotels and the great majority of the short-term apartments the festival runs on; the trade-off is noise and a long climb of stairs rather than distance. Le Suquet, the old town on the hill above the port, is quieter and has the better casual restaurants. Many attendees never sleep in Cannes at all, taking rooms in Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, Mougins, Le Cannet or Nice and commuting by train or car; the coastal railway is the reason this works. Cap d'Antibes, twenty minutes west, holds the coast's best-known grand hotels and is where much of the fortnight's off-site programming happens.

05Acceso y hospitalidad

The festival is accredited rather than ticketed, and it publishes the rules plainly. Applications open in the winter through the festival's own portal and are assessed by category: press, film industry professional, Marché du Film participant, festival programmer, and cinephile. Badges are personal, color-coded, and set queue priority for screenings; there is no publicly purchasable pass to the Official Selection and none should be bought from resellers. Two published routes exist for people without professional standing. Cannes Cinéphiles, run with the city, allocates Official Selection seats to members of local film associations and to residents. Trois Jours à Cannes is a free pass for applicants aged 18 to 28, applied for online in the spring, giving access to Official Selection screenings over the festival's final three days. The Marché du Film sells its own accreditation to companies. Cinéma de la Plage requires no badge at all: free tickets for the beach screenings are distributed in advance and a standing area takes anyone who turns up.

06Dónde tiene lugar la actividad social

The public geography is a single boulevard. The Croisette from the Palais east to the Martinez is the promenade everyone walks several times a day, and the hotel terraces along it — the Carlton's, the Majestic's, the Martinez's — function as the festival's open-air offices from breakfast until late. The Pantiero and the Vieux Port hold the pavilion village and the queue for the market. Behind them, the Rue d'Antibes carries the shops and the everyday cafés, and Le Suquet's stepped lanes hold the restaurants people retreat to when they have stopped working. The beach clubs along the Croisette are taken over in rotation by companies and brands during the fortnight and their access varies by day; several open to walk-in customers outside their event hours. Along the coast, Antibes and Juan-les-Pins take the late crowd, and the pebble beaches west of the Palais are where the town's own residents go to avoid all of it.

07Cómo llegar

Aviación comercialNice Côte d'Azur (NCE) is 27 km east, France's third-busiest airport and the point of arrival for almost everyone. Transfer to Cannes takes 30 to 50 minutes by road depending on traffic on the A8, and considerably longer on the opening and closing weekends. Marseille (MRS) is a two-hour alternative when Nice is full.
FerroviarioCannes station sits five minutes' walk behind the Croisette on the Marseille-Ventimiglia coastal line, with TGV services from Paris in about five and a half hours and constant regional trains along the coast to Antibes, Nice and Monaco. During the festival the local trains are the fastest way in and out of town and the reason staying in Antibes or Nice is practical.
AutomóvilThe A8 motorway runs behind the coast with exits at Cannes-Mandelieu and Cannes-Le Cannet. Driving inside Cannes during the fortnight is slow and parking near the Palais is effectively unavailable; the underground car parks fill by mid-morning. A car is useful only for reaching Mougins, Grasse or Cap d'Antibes.
Aviación privadaCannes-Mandelieu (CEQ), 7 km west of the centre, is the closest business-aviation field and handles a large share of festival traffic; it has noise restrictions and a runway that limits the largest aircraft. Nice Côte d'Azur handles the rest through its business terminal, and slot and parking pressure during the festival is significant.
HelicópteroScheduled and on-demand helicopter services link Nice airport to the Cannes-Mandelieu heliport and to Monaco in a matter of minutes, and are heavily used during the festival when the A8 is congested.
MarinasThe Vieux Port and Port Pierre Canto, at the eastern end of the Croisette, take visiting yachts; berths for the festival fortnight are contracted far in advance and many larger vessels anchor in the bay and tender in.

08Aspectos prácticos

VestimentaThe 7:00 and 10:00 evening gala screenings in the Grand Théâtre Lumière require black tie for men and equivalent formal dress for women, and the festival enforces it at the door. Every other screening, and the entire market, runs on ordinary daytime clothes, and the working uniform is a linen jacket at most. The Croisette is hot and the Palais is heavily air-conditioned, which argues for layers. Comfortable shoes matter more than they should, because the distances add up and the queues are long.
ClimaMid-May on the Côte d'Azur is warm and usually dry, with afternoon highs commonly in the low twenties Celsius and evenings cool enough for a jacket on the beach. May is not the wettest month but Mediterranean thunderstorms do occur and have interrupted the red carpet before. The sea is swimmable but still cool. No station normals were sourced for this record, so the summary is qualitative.
Cómo desplazarseCannes is walkable end to end and walking is normally the fastest way between the Palais, the hotels and the Rue d'Antibes. Taxis are scarce and slow around gala times; the coastal train and the local bus network are more reliable. Traffic restrictions around the Palais come and go with the red-carpet schedule, and the pedestrian crush on the Croisette between 6:00 and 8:00 in the evening is genuinely difficult to cross.
HotelesCannes has a fixed and modest room stock against demand that arrives all at once, and the festival is the most expensive fortnight of the local year by a wide margin. Regulars hold the same rooms and apartments year to year; what remains generally goes by January. Short-term apartment rentals absorb most of the market attendees, often shared, and the practical fallback is Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, Le Cannet, Mougins or Nice with a train commute.
RestaurantesRestaurants along the Croisette and in Le Suquet book out for the fortnight well in advance, and many hotel dining rooms are given over to private use for parts of the festival. The reliable strategy is to eat early or late and to look behind the Rue d'Antibes and up the hill in Le Suquet. Beach restaurants operate on their event schedule rather than their usual one, so opening hours during the festival should not be assumed.
Momento de la reservaHotels and apartments for May are typically secured between the previous September and January; the Croisette addresses go earliest. Restaurant tables for the busiest nights are worth booking a month out. Accreditation applications open in the winter and close well before the festival — the free Trois Jours à Cannes pass in particular has a fixed spring deadline and a quota.
EntradasThere is no general public ticket to the Official Selection. Access runs through accreditation, through Cannes Cinéphiles for residents and film-association members, and through the Trois Jours à Cannes pass for 18 to 28 year olds. Cinéma de la Plage on Macé beach is free and open to the public, with tickets distributed in advance and standing room on the night. The festival warns against badge and invitation resale; no price is published because none is charged.
HospitalidadThe festival itself does not sell hospitality packages. What exists around it is commercial and separate: beach-club and pavilion takeovers by studios, sales companies, brands and national film bodies, most of them invitation-only for the trade, and yacht charters used as offices and reception spaces. The Marché du Film sells stand space and accreditation to companies through its own registration. Anything advertised as a purchasable red-carpet invitation should be treated with suspicion.

09Historia

The festival was conceived in the late 1930s as a French answer to the Venice Mostra, which had come under Fascist political influence; Louis Lumière agreed to preside over an inaugural edition set for September 1939, and it was abandoned when Germany invaded Poland. The first festival ran in 1946 with twenty-one countries taking part, in a temporary hall while the first Palais was built. The top prize was called the Grand Prix until 1955, when the Palme d'Or was introduced.

Three changes made the modern festival. The Marché du Film in 1959 turned an artistic showcase into the industry's annual clearing house. The events of May 1968 stopped the festival mid-course when directors including Truffaut and Godard occupied the hall in solidarity with the general strike, and the Directors' Fortnight was founded the following year as a deliberately independent counterweight. And the present Palais, opened in 1982 and known locally as the bunker, gave the festival the capacity to hold both halves of itself under one roof. The 2020 edition was cancelled because of the pandemic, the first interruption since 1968.

10Quién está ahí

Directors, actors and their agents and publicists; sales companies, distributors, financiers and streaming executives at the Marché; several thousand accredited journalists and critics; festival programmers scouting the year's circuit; brand and sponsor delegations; and a large public audience of residents and day visitors who come for the beach screenings and the barriers. The Marché side of the festival is the largest single group and the least visible in photographs.
