Formula 1 on an island in the Saint Lawrence built for Expo 67, reached by metro and walled closely enough to punish any error.
The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve runs 4.361 kilometers around Ile Notre-Dame, an artificial island in the Saint Lawrence made for Expo 67 and now a city park. The layout is short straights and slow chicanes hemmed by concrete, ending at a final chicane whose exit wall caught three world champions in one session in 1999.
There is no parking and almost no road access for spectators; the metro runs to a station inside the park, so most of the crowd arrives underground and walks in.
01Waarom het relevant is
This is Formula 1's longest-established North American fixture and the one with the deepest local roots: the circuit is named for the Quebec driver who won the first race held on it, and the contract was extended in 2025 to 2035. In our reading it is the most sociable race on the calendar for people not being entertained by a sponsor.
02De week eromheen
Montreal builds a week around the race that has little to do with motorsport. Downtown streets close for open-air food, music and display programming from Thursday, drawing crowds far larger than the circuit holds, and restaurant terraces run at capacity.
03Wanneer aan te komen
Thursday, to be in the city while the street programming starts, leaving Monday.
04Waar te verblijven
Downtown is where the street festival happens and where most visitors stay, a short metro ride from the island. Old Montreal is quieter and equally close; the Plateau and Mile End are the restaurant districts. Proximity to a metro station matters more than the neighborhood.
05Toegang en hospitality
The promoter publishes general admission, a long list of numbered grandstands, several named terraces, accessible seating, and premium suites handled by direct inquiry rather than online sale. General admission is well regarded because the island's banks give real sightlines.
06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt
The closed downtown streets, the terraces along Crescent and Sainte-Catherine and in Old Montreal, and the bars of the Plateau later. Almost all of it is public.

08Praktische informatie
09Geschiedenis
The Canadian Grand Prix began in 1961 at Mosport Park and became a championship round in 1967. Safety concerns pushed it to Montreal in 1978, onto a circuit laid out on the Expo 67 island roads. Gilles Villeneuve won that first race and the circuit was renamed for him after his death in 1982.
10Wie is er
Canadians from Quebec and Ontario, a substantial American contingent from the northeast, European visitors, and a city-wide audience attending the downtown programming without a ticket.

| 2027 | Datum in behandelingThe 2027 Formula 1 calendar had not been published as of 6 September 2026 and the promoter's site carried no 2027 dates. The race moved from June to late May only in 2026, so one edition does not yet establish a pattern to estimate from; May is given as the typical month. The event's contract with Formula 1 was extended in 2025 to run to 2035. | |
| 2026 | VoltooidRound 5 of the 2026 Formula 1 season and a sprint weekend, per Formula 1's official calendar, with the race on Sunday 24 May. This was the first Canadian Grand Prix held in May, moved from its traditional June slot so that the North American rounds sit together. |
