BRAFA is the oldest fair in this part of the calendar and the one that best preserves the older idea of what an art fair is: a hundred and fifty dealers, everything vetted, and no attempt to separate periods or disciplines. Egyptian antiquities sit near Congolese masks near Flemish primitives near mid-century Belgian design near a contemporary painting, and the aisles are laid out with substantial floral installations rather than as a grid. Collectors here buy across categories, which is the fair's founding assumption. The run is unusually long: a Collectors' Preview on the Friday and an Exclusive Saturday precede eight public days, so the fair occupies a week and a half of late January. Each year a Guest of Honour, sometimes an artist and sometimes an institution, mounts a presentation through the fair.

01Waarom het relevant is

BRAFA opens the European year. It is the first significant fair of the calendar, held before the market has decided what it thinks about the year ahead, and Belgium's own collecting culture, which is deep, private and unusually catholic in taste, gives it a character no single-field fair has.

Our reading is that its importance is regional rather than global, and that this is a strength. For a visitor it means a fair where dealers have time to talk, where the objects are more varied than at any comparable event, and where the whole trip costs a fraction of a Basel or Maastricht one.

02De week eromheen

Brussels does not reorganize itself around BRAFA the way Maastricht does around TEFAF, but the trade uses the week. The Sablon, the antiques quarter around the Place du Grand Sablon in the upper town, holds the city's dealers and its weekend antiques market, and is the natural extension of a fair visit. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts and the Magritte Museum sit at the top of the same hill; Bozar is a few minutes away; and Wiels, in a converted brewery in Forest, is the city's most serious contemporary space. Many visitors come for a day from Paris, London, Amsterdam or Cologne, all within about two hours by train, and do not stay at all.

03Wanneer aan te komen

The Friday preview if you have an invitation. Otherwise the fair's length is its advantage: the first weekend is busy, the following weekdays are quiet and much better for looking, and the final weekend fills again. If staying, two nights covers the fair, the Sablon and the museums comfortably.

04Waar te verblijven

The upper town around the Sablon and the Royal Museums is the best base, close to the dealers, the museums and the restaurants, and about twenty minutes from Brussels Expo by metro. The area around the Grand Place is more touristed and equally central. Ixelles and Saint-Gilles, south of the centre, are where Brussels actually lives and eats. The hotels beside Brussels Expo exist for trade fairs and have nothing around them.

05Toegang en hospitality

The Collectors' Preview on the Friday and the Exclusive Saturday that follows are invitation-based, issued by the fair and by exhibiting dealers. Public admission then runs for eight days, with tickets sold on brafa.art and at Brussels Expo; the organizer publishes prices each year and they are not reproduced here. Everything shown is vetted by independent specialists before opening, and a talks programme is included with admission. Brussels's museum admission is among the cheapest in Western Europe.

06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt

Brussels Expo is on the edge of the city beside the Atomium, so the fair's own restaurant and bars carry the daytime and the evening happens elsewhere. The Sablon is the trade's quarter: the square itself, the cafés around it, and the restaurants on the Rue de Rollebeek. The Place du Châtelain in Ixelles and the streets around the Parvis de Saint-Gilles hold the city's better and less formal eating. Brussels's café culture is the point of the week for many visitors and requires no invitation of any kind.

07Hoe u er komt

Commerciële luchtvaartBrussels Airport (BRU) at Zaventem is 20 minutes from the centre by train and about 25 from Brussels Expo by road. Brussels South Charleroi (CRL) serves low-cost carriers and is an hour away by coach.
TreinBrussels-Midi is one of Europe's best-connected stations: Eurostar from London in about two hours, from Paris in an hour and twenty-five minutes and from Amsterdam in under two, with ICE services to Cologne and Frankfurt. Metro line 6 runs from the city to Heysel, the station beside Brussels Expo, in about twenty minutes.
AutoThe Brussels ring road serves Brussels Expo directly and parking there is extensive, which makes driving practical for regional visitors from the Netherlands, Germany and northern France. The city centre has a low-emission zone and a large pedestrian area.
PrivéluchtvaartBrussels Airport handles business aviation, and Antwerp and Liège are used as alternatives. Pressure during BRAFA is light.
HelikopterThere is no routine helicopter transfer for this fair; Brussels Expo is twenty minutes from the centre by metro.
JachthavensBrussels is inland on a canal; there is no yacht berthing. Antwerp and Ostend are the nearest options on the coast and the Scheldt.

08Praktische informatie

DresscodeSmart and warm. The preview days are the dressiest and remain well short of formal. January in Belgium is cold and wet, so a proper coat matters, and Brussels Expo's halls are large and cool.
WeerLate January in Brussels is cold, grey and damp, with daytime highs typically around six Celsius, nights near freezing and frequent rain. Daylight is short. Almost everything about the week is indoors, which suits the fair's length. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
Verplaatsing ter plaatseMetro line 6 to Heysel is the practical route from the centre and takes about twenty minutes. Trams and buses serve the Sablon and Ixelles. Taxis are less plentiful than in comparable cities and ride-hailing is the usual alternative. Walking within the upper town and the Sablon is straightforward; the walk between the upper and lower towns is steep.
HotelsThe least pressured hotel market of any fair in this batch. Brussels in January is quiet, rates are low and rooms are available days ahead. The Heysel hotels beside the fair fill first with exhibitors and are the least appealing place to spend an evening.
RestaurantsBrussels eats well and cheaply and the fair does not strain its restaurants. The Sablon and Ixelles tighten a little on preview nights. A week's notice covers almost anything; the cafés and brasseries take walk-ins throughout.
ReserveringstimingHotels one to two weeks ahead. Restaurants a few days, longer for the small number of well-known kitchens. Tickets are sold online in advance and at the door throughout the eight public days.
TicketsDay tickets for the eight public days are sold on brafa.art and at Brussels Expo, and the organizer publishes prices each year; they are not reproduced here as they were not verified for this record. The Friday Collectors' Preview and the Exclusive Saturday are invitation-only and are not sold. The fair's talks programme is included with admission. Brussels's museums, including the Royal Museums of Fine Arts and the Magritte Museum, charge their own low separate admission.
HospitalityPreview and Exclusive Saturday invitations come from the fair and from exhibiting dealers rather than being sold. On-site hospitality is limited to the fair's own restaurant and bars, which are open to ticket holders on public days. There is no purchasable VIP tier and no significant corporate hospitality programme, which is consistent with a fair that has stayed dealer-run.

09Geschiedenis

The fair was founded in 1956 as the Foire des Antiquaires de Belgique, which makes it one of the oldest art and antiques fairs in Europe, older than TEFAF by three decades. It spent years at the converted Tour and Taxis freight terminal before relocating to Brussels Expo on the Heysel plateau in the mid-2020s. The Guest of Honour tradition, which invites an artist, collection or institution to present within the fair, has run for decades and is its most distinctive editorial device.

10Wie is er

Belgian collectors, who buy across categories more readily than most, together with Dutch, French, German and British buyers within easy rail distance; the northern European historical and tribal art trade; museum curators from Belgian and Dutch institutions; interior designers; and a large Belgian public across the eight public days, for whom the fair is an established January outing.
