Britain's largest public film festival: twelve October days, around 240 features, shown in cinemas across central London.

The London Film Festival has been run by the British Film Institute since 1957 and is, in the BFI's own framing, first and foremost a festival for audiences. That distinguishes it from almost every other event of its rank. There is no market attached, the competitive element is modest, and the programme is built less to launch films into a sales process than to show British audiences the year's international cinema before — and in many cases instead of — UK distribution. Around 240 features and 150 shorts from more than seventy countries screen each year.
The structure is legible. Galas carry the opening and closing films, the headline premieres and a set of themed strands; Special Presentations sit alongside them; and the awards are deliberately few — Best Film, the Sutherland Trophy for a first feature, the Grierson Award for documentary, Best British Newcomer, a short film award and audience awards, with BFI Fellowships given to established figures. Kristy Matheson has directed the festival since 2023, following Tricia Tuttle.
It is also the most geographically dispersed of the major festivals, which is the thing visitors most often get wrong. The 70th edition in 2026 uses seven venues: BFI Southbank and the BFI IMAX at Waterloo, the Royal Festival Hall next door, and then the Institute of Contemporary Arts on the Mall, the Prince Charles Cinema off Leicester Square, Vue West End and Curzon Soho on the other side of the river. Moving between a South Bank screening and a Soho one takes twenty minutes on foot across Waterloo Bridge, and the festival's schedule does not always allow for it. Since the 60th edition in 2016 the BFI has also built a temporary cinema in Victoria Embankment Gardens for some editions.
01重要性说明
London's position in the autumn is the position of a last reading. It falls after Venice, Telluride and Toronto and before the December shortlists, which makes it the final large festival showing of the films that will be campaigned, and the point at which the British press and the British trade form their view of the year. For a UK audience it is simply the largest act of film programming of the year, and for a great many international titles it is the only time they will be shown in Britain at all.
In our reading the festival's value to the wider calendar is its overlap with everything else London does in October. The second week of the 2026 edition runs alongside Frieze London and Frieze Masters in Regent's Park and the October auction week in St James's and Mayfair; the London Design Festival has just finished and PAD London sits in the same fortnight. For anyone following the international art and culture calendar, the middle of October in London is one of the densest weeks of the year, and the film festival is the part of it that anyone can buy a ticket to.
02前后一周
London absorbs the festival almost invisibly, which is part of its appeal and part of its problem. There are no road closures beyond the immediate frontage of a gala venue on a premiere evening, no fenced quarter, and no sense anywhere outside the queues that a festival is happening. What changes is the availability of cinema seats and the traffic around Leicester Square on gala nights.
The fortnight's real character comes from what it shares the city with. Frieze London and Frieze Masters open in Regent's Park in the middle of the festival, the October auction week runs the same days in St James's, King Street and New Bond Street, and PAD London sits in Berkeley Square; the galleries of Mayfair, Fitzrovia and the East End all time their openings to the same week. The consequence is that hotel rates and restaurant bookings in central London are driven by the art calendar rather than by the film one, and that the film festival is the cheapest and most open of the several things happening at once.
03抵达时间
The opening Wednesday and the first weekend hold the largest galas and the press activity. If the object is to see a lot of films with the least friction, the second Monday to Thursday is the quietest stretch and the easiest for returns. Anyone combining the festival with Frieze and the auctions should arrive the Monday of the second week, which is when all three overlap; anyone who wants the film festival on its own should come for the first week instead.
04住宿地点
The South Bank and Waterloo are closest to BFI Southbank, the IMAX and the Royal Festival Hall, and are the right base if your programme is weighted there; the area is short of rooms and restaurants. Covent Garden, the Strand and Soho put you inside the West End venues and within ten minutes on foot of Leicester Square, at the cost of noise. Bloomsbury and Fitzrovia are quieter, well placed for both the West End and Regent's Park if you are also going to Frieze, and generally better value. Mayfair and St James's are where the art trade stays that fortnight and are priced accordingly. Southwark and Bermondsey, a few minutes east of the South Bank, are the sensible cheaper option.
05出入与接待
The festival is ticketed and sold to the public, which is the single most useful thing to know about it. Tickets for individual screenings go on sale through the BFI's own box office once the programme is announced in early September, and the galas go first. Press and industry accreditation is applied for separately through the BFI in the late summer. There is no purchasable hospitality programme; the festival's sponsors run their own invitation-based lounges at the gala venues. The BFI's membership scheme and the exact booking windows and prices could not be verified for this record because the BFI's ticketing pages block automated access, so check bfi.org.uk for the current scheme before planning around a particular on-sale date.

Two clusters, twenty minutes apart. On the South Bank, the Queen's Walk in front of BFI Southbank, its bar and the secondhand book market under Waterloo Bridge are the festival's daytime centre, with the Royal Festival Hall foyers — free to enter and open all day — functioning as the informal meeting room. Across the river, Soho is where the industry actually drinks and eats: the streets around Leicester Square and Chinatown for pre-screening, Dean Street and Frith Street after, and the Soho screening rooms and private members' clubs for the trade's own programme, which is on invitation. Reporting describes distributor and sponsor receptions through the fortnight in Soho and Mayfair; the venues are public the rest of the time.

09历史
The festival began in 1957 at the National Film Theatre on the South Bank as a compilation of the best of other festivals — a London showing of work already premiered at Cannes, Venice and Berlin — and that curatorial premise, rather than a competitive one, is still visible in the programme. The National Film Theatre became BFI Southbank in 2007, and the festival's centre of gravity moved with it while the premieres shifted west to the larger Leicester Square and West End houses.
Two changes mattered. The expansion into Leicester Square's big commercial cinemas through the 1990s and 2000s gave the festival the red carpets and the press scale it had previously lacked. And the temporary Embankment Garden Cinema, built for the 60th edition in 2016, established that the BFI would put up its own venue when the commercial ones did not fit — a pattern repeated since. Attendance reached a recorded high of 163,000 in 2014.

A paying London public that makes up the clear majority of seats; British and international distributors, sales agents and programmers using the festival as a last look at the autumn's titles; directors and performers attending their own screenings; a large press corps weighted to the British trade and broadsheets; BFI members and patrons; and, in the middle week, a crossover audience of collectors and gallery people who are in town for Frieze and the auctions.
