ART SG takes the Sands Expo and Convention Centre beneath Marina Bay Sands for three public days in January, with more than a hundred galleries from over thirty countries. Its geography is the point: Singapore sits between the Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai, Filipino, Vietnamese and Indian markets, and ART SG is the only fair that gathers galleries and collectors from all of them in one room. A main gallery sector is surrounded by smaller strands: FUTURES for emerging artists and younger galleries, PLATFORM for large-scale installation, and FILM and TALKS through the days, with regional focuses including South Asia Insights and, for 2027, a dedicated South Asian pavilion. Because the fair is inside a hotel and casino complex, hotel, fair, restaurants and the bay are all within a few minutes of each other.

01Perché è rilevante

Southeast Asia has substantial private collections and an unusually high concentration of wealth relative to population, and had no international fair of its own until 2023. ART SG was built to fill that, and Singapore's neutrality, its logistics, its free-port storage and its rule of law make it the region's obvious place for one.

Our reading is that the fair has established itself without yet becoming essential. It has not displaced Hong Kong, and Seoul has taken the region's September slot. What ART SG has is the January date, no competitor within several thousand kilometres, and a regional audience that finds Hong Kong and Seoul expensive and far.

02La settimana intorno all'evento

ART SG is deliberately placed inside Singapore Art Week, which runs for ten or eleven days and is the larger event. S.E.A. Focus, the Southeast Asian platform staged at Tanjong Pagar Distripark, is the most substantive of the satellite programmes, and the Singapore Art Museum occupies the same converted warehouse complex. Gillman Barracks, a former military camp turned gallery cluster, runs its own evening programme, and the National Gallery Singapore mounts a large public light and art festival across the Civic District. The city absorbs the week entirely; the practical constraint is heat and rain rather than logistics, since January is the wettest month.

03Quando arrivare

Wednesday for a Thursday preview, allowing for the flight. The fair takes half a day. Because Singapore Art Week runs well beyond it, the better plan is three or four nights: the fair and Marina Bay on one day, Tanjong Pagar Distripark on another, Gillman Barracks in an evening, and the Civic District after dark.

04Dove alloggiare

Marina Bay puts the fair directly downstairs and the bay, the Gardens by the Bay and the Civic District within walking distance. The Civic District and Bras Basah are ten minutes away by MRT and closer to the museums. Tanjong Pagar and Chinatown are cheaper, better for eating and closest to the Distripark. Orchard Road holds the largest concentration of hotels and is a short train ride from everything.

05Accesso e ospitalità

The fair runs a VIP preview and vernissage on the Thursday, by invitation from the organizer and from exhibiting galleries rather than sold, with public days on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are sold on artsg.com and at the venue; the organizer publishes prices in Singapore dollars each edition and they are not reproduced here. UBS is the founding and lead partner and runs the principal client lounge. Much of Singapore Art Week around the fair is free, including the National Gallery's public festival and most of the Gillman Barracks openings.

06Dove si svolge l'attività sociale

Marina Bay Sands is a self-contained complex, so the fair's immediate social life happens in its own restaurants and the galleries beneath it. Beyond that the movement is short and specific: the bayfront promenade and Gardens by the Bay after dark, the restaurants and bars of Tanjong Pagar and Keong Saik Road, the Civic District's lawns during the light festival, and the shophouse bars of Duxton and Amoy Street. Singapore's hawker centres are open late and are where a good part of the week actually eats.

07Come arrivare

Aviazione commercialeSingapore Changi (SIN) is one of the world's major hubs and is 20 to 25 minutes from Marina Bay by road, or about 30 on the MRT East West line with a change. Seletar handles regional and business aviation.
TrenoThere is no international passenger rail beyond services to Johor Bahru in Malaysia. Within the city the MRT is fast, air-conditioned and inexpensive; Bayfront station on the Circle and Downtown lines opens directly into the Marina Bay Sands complex.
AutoTaxis and ride-hailing are plentiful and reasonably priced, and Singapore's roads are efficient, though electronic road pricing applies in the centre at peak times. A car is unnecessary for the week.
Aviazione privataSeletar Airport in the north of the island is Singapore's dedicated business aviation airport, about 30 minutes from Marina Bay; Changi also handles private movements.
ElicotteroThere is no routine civil helicopter transfer service for visitors; the island is small enough that ground transport is faster.
MarineONE°15 Marina at Sentosa Cove and Marina at Keppel Bay take visiting yachts, both about twenty minutes from Marina Bay; Singapore's deepwater anchorages are among the busiest commercial waters in the world.

08Aspetti pratici

AbbigliamentoLight and smart. Singapore is hot and humid year-round and heavily air-conditioned indoors, so the practical answer is thin natural fabrics and something to put on inside. Jackets are worn in the evening at the bay's restaurants and almost nowhere else. Few venues publish a dress code; some rooftop bars do.
MeteoJanuary is the wettest month of Singapore's year, in the northeast monsoon: daytime highs around thirty Celsius, nights around twenty-four, very high humidity and frequent heavy afternoon rain. Nothing is seasonal about the temperature; only the rainfall changes. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
Come spostarsiThe MRT reaches everything the week involves and Bayfront station opens directly into the fair's complex. Covered and underground walkways link much of the central business district and Marina Bay, which matters in monsoon rain. Ride-hailing is inexpensive. Allow twenty minutes to Gillman Barracks and ten to Tanjong Pagar Distripark.
HotelSingapore's hotel stock is very large and ART SG does not strain it, though Marina Bay's own towers fill for the fair and rates there rise. The Civic District, Tanjong Pagar and Orchard Road all hold availability. Booking three to four weeks ahead is comfortable.
RistorantiThe better restaurants in Tanjong Pagar, Keong Saik and Marina Bay tighten during the week and galleries take private rooms for client dinners. Singapore's hawker centres and casual shophouse restaurants absorb everything else without booking. Two weeks ahead covers most reservations.
Tempistiche di prenotazioneHotels three to four weeks ahead. Restaurants one to two weeks, longer for the small number of internationally known kitchens. Fair tickets are sold online in advance and at the venue.
BigliettiPublic admission covers the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with tickets sold on artsg.com and at Sands Expo. Prices are published in Singapore dollars each edition and are not reproduced here as they were not verified for this record. The Thursday VIP preview and vernissage are by invitation and are not sold. Most of Singapore Art Week's surrounding programme, including the National Gallery's public festival and the Gillman Barracks openings, is free.
OspitalitàPreview access comes by invitation from the fair and from exhibiting galleries and is not sold. UBS, the founding and lead partner, operates the principal client lounge. The wider week's hospitality is generated by private banks, family offices and galleries rather than by the fair and is invitation-based; the free public programme across Singapore Art Week is unusually substantial by comparison.

09Storia

Singapore had earlier attempts at an international fair, including Art Stage Singapore, which ran from 2011 and collapsed abruptly in 2019 days before its edition was due to open. ART SG was announced soon after under The Art Assembly, the partnership behind several Asian and Australasian fairs, and was postponed repeatedly through the pandemic before opening in January 2023. Its arrival coincided with a broader shift of capital and family offices toward Singapore in the early 2020s, and with the maturing of Singapore Art Week.

10Chi è presente

Collectors from Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam in the greatest concentration available anywhere; Indian and Sri Lankan buyers, whom the fair has courted directly; Australian galleries and collectors; East Asian and European dealers testing the region; the family offices and private banks that have concentrated in Singapore since the early 2020s; and a large, young Singaporean public across the public days.
