The Gulf's longest-running art fair, held at Madinat Jumeirah with the strongest South Asian, African and Middle Eastern gallery list of any fair.

Art Dubai occupies the low buildings and courtyards of Madinat Jumeirah, a resort complex built around artificial waterways, which gives it a physical character no convention-hall fair has: booths open onto shaded walkways and the sea is a few minutes away. It is the oldest international fair in the Gulf and the one with the most distinctive gallery list, weighted toward the Middle East, North and West Africa, South Asia and Central Asia. Art Dubai Galleries carries the main contemporary presentations; Zamaniyyat covers modern and historical material from the wider region; Bawwaba commissions solo presentations around an annual theme; and Art Dubai Digital, launched before most fairs took digital work seriously, remains the largest such section anywhere. The Global Art Forum, the fair's talks programme, has run since the beginning.

01Por qué es relevante

Art Dubai established that a market existed in the Gulf a decade and a half before Art Basel and Frieze arrived in the region, and it did so by serving galleries the European fairs did not reach. For dealers in Beirut, Cairo, Tehran, Karachi, Lahore, Dhaka, Lagos and Casablanca it has often been the only international fair genuinely open to them.

Our reading is that its position is now contested. Art Basel Qatar opened in Doha in 2026 and Frieze took over the Abu Dhabi fair the same year, putting three international fairs in the Gulf within nine months. The next three editions will decide the question.

02La semana en torno al evento

Dubai's art week is dispersed across a very large city. Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz, a converted industrial district with more than twenty galleries and the OMA-designed Concrete exhibition space, is the essential second destination and holds late openings through the week. The Jameel Arts Centre on the Creek, the Dubai Design District and the Etihad Museum programme alongside, and Sikka Art Fair in the restored wind-tower quarter of Al Fahidi runs a more local programme. Sharjah, forty minutes up the coast, is the more serious institutional destination, and in Sharjah Biennial years the two events are deliberately scheduled to overlap. Dubai has far more hotel capacity than the fair requires, so the week creates no accommodation pressure.

03Cuándo llegar

The day before the preview if you hold an invitation. The fair itself takes half a day. Build the visit around Alserkal Avenue, which is best in the evening, and reserve a full day for Sharjah, which is the most rewarding part of the week and requires a car.

04Dónde alojarse

Madinat Jumeirah is itself a hotel complex and staying inside it puts the fair at the door. Downtown Dubai, around the Burj Khalifa, is more central for the design district and the Jameel Arts Centre and about twenty-five minutes from the fair. DIFC and Business Bay hold the business hotels and several galleries. Deira and Bur Dubai on the Creek are older, cheaper and closer to Sikka and the historic quarter.

05Acceso y hospitalidad

Art Dubai normally runs an invitation preview day before public days, with tickets sold on its website and at Madinat Jumeirah; the organizer publishes prices in dirhams each year and they are not reproduced here. The 2026 special edition was free to attend, which was specific to that edition and should not be assumed for 2027. The Global Art Forum is included with admission. Alserkal Avenue's galleries, the Jameel Arts Centre and Sikka Art Fair are free, so a visitor without a fair ticket still has a full week available.

06Dónde tiene lugar la actividad social

Madinat Jumeirah's waterways, courtyards and terraces are the fair's own social space. In the evening the week moves to Alserkal Avenue, where the warehouse galleries, a cinema and several cafés stay open late and the crowd is the most genuinely mixed of the week. Downtown and DIFC hold the restaurants and licensed bars, and the Design District's plaza fills after work. Al Fahidi's restored courtyard houses and the Creek's abra crossings are the best public spaces in the city and cost almost nothing.

07Cómo llegar

Aviación comercialDubai International (DXB) is the world's busiest airport for international passengers and about 30 minutes from Madinat Jumeirah outside peak traffic. Al Maktoum International (DWC) at Dubai South is closer to the fair but has limited scheduled service. Sharjah and Abu Dhabi airports are alternatives within a two-hour drive.
FerroviarioThe Dubai Metro's Red Line runs the length of Sheikh Zayed Road with a station near Mall of the Emirates, a short taxi ride from Madinat Jumeirah; the Tram serves the Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence. There is no intercity passenger rail, though the Etihad Rail network is under development.
AutomóvilDubai is a driving city and taxis and ride-hailing are inexpensive and plentiful. Sheikh Zayed Road congests at peak hours. Parking at Madinat Jumeirah is organized for the fair. A car is genuinely useful for Alserkal, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
Aviación privadaAl Maktoum International at Dubai South is the region's principal business aviation airport with dedicated terminals, and Dubai International also handles private movements. Sharjah and Abu Dhabi take the overflow.
HelicópteroCharter helicopter transfers and sightseeing flights operate from Atlantis on the Palm and from the Dubai Festival City heliport; they are more tourism than transport.
MarinasDubai Marina, Dubai Harbour and Port Rashid take visiting yachts, with Dubai Harbour the largest and closest to Madinat Jumeirah. Berths are contracted well ahead during the winter season.

08Aspectos prácticos

VestimentaSmart and light. The UAE expects shoulders and knees covered in public places outside hotels and resorts, and modest dress is required at mosques and in the older quarters. Linen and cotton; the fair is partly outdoors and partly air-conditioned, so a light layer helps. No formal dress code is published.
ClimaMid-April is warm and pleasant, with daytime highs typically in the low thirties Celsius and comfortable evenings. By mid-May, when the 2026 edition ran, daytime temperatures reach the high thirties with rising humidity and outdoor programming becomes difficult before sunset. Rain is very unlikely in either month. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
Cómo desplazarseTaxis and ride-hailing are cheap and are how almost everyone moves; distances are long and walking between districts is not practical in the heat. The Metro is useful along Sheikh Zayed Road but does not reach Madinat Jumeirah directly. Allow an hour each way for Sharjah and ninety minutes for Abu Dhabi, more at rush hour, and note that Sharjah's traffic is the worst in the country.
HotelesDubai's hotel supply far exceeds what the fair generates, so rates rise little and rooms are available late. Madinat Jumeirah itself is the exception and books out for the week. April sits at the end of the high season and May at the start of the low one, so a May edition is materially cheaper than an April one.
RestaurantesRestaurant capacity is abundant and reservations a week or two ahead cover almost everything. The exceptions are the small number of internationally known kitchens in DIFC and Downtown, which book earlier. Alserkal's cafés and the Creek's older restaurants take walk-ins.
Momento de la reservaHotels three to four weeks ahead, earlier for Madinat Jumeirah itself. Restaurants one to two weeks. Fair tickets are sold online in advance and at the venue.
EntradasIn a normal year the fair sells day tickets and multi-day passes on its own website and at Madinat Jumeirah, with prices published in dirhams; they are not reproduced here as they were not verified for this record. The 2026 special edition was free to attend. The Global Art Forum is included with admission. Alserkal Avenue, the Jameel Arts Centre, Sikka Art Fair and the Sharjah Art Foundation's spaces are free.
HospitalidadThe preview day is invitation-based, issued by the fair and by exhibiting galleries, and is not sold. The fair's partners, which have included private banks and Emirati cultural bodies, run their own client programmes. Because the surrounding institutions are free and the emirate's cultural infrastructure is publicly funded, the gap between the invited and the ordinary visitor is narrower here than at most fairs on this circuit.

09Historia

The fair opened in 2007 as the Gulf Art Fair and took the Art Dubai name for its second edition, arriving alongside a wider build-out of cultural infrastructure across the Emirates. It grew through the 2010s as Dubai's Alserkal Avenue gallery district developed in Al Quoz and as Sharjah's biennial and foundation established regional curatorial credibility. It has been unusually willing to change its own format; its twentieth edition in 2026, disrupted by regional conflict and remade as a free special edition, was the most visible of those adjustments.

10Quién está ahí

Collectors and institutional buyers from across the Gulf, the Levant, North Africa, Iran, Turkey, South Asia and increasingly sub-Saharan Africa; the region's galleries, many of which show at no other international fair; museum and foundation staff from the Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia; a substantial European and American curatorial contingent; and Dubai's large resident expatriate population, which forms most of the public audience.
