Art Basel Paris is the newest of the group's fairs and the one that has changed a national market fastest. It opened in October 2022 under the name Paris+ par Art Basel, after Art Basel won the Grand Palais concession that FIAC had held for decades, and took the full Art Basel name in 2024 when it moved into the restored building. The 2026 edition, its fifth, brought 211 exhibitors from 41 countries into the nave and the surrounding galleries, arranged in three sectors: Galeries for the main presentations, Emergence for younger galleries showing a single artist, and Premise, which admits projects built around a specific curatorial proposition, including historical work made before 1900.

The building does much of the work. The Grand Palais nave is one of the few fair spaces in the world people photograph for its own sake, and the fair's layout, radial rather than gridded, makes it feel less like a trade floor than Basel or Miami. The trade-off is size: Paris takes roughly two-thirds the number of galleries Basel does, and the fair reads as tighter and more selective as a result.

Outside the halls, the fair runs a Public Program that places commissioned and loaned work at sites across central Paris, free to anyone. Recent editions have used Place Vendôme and the Jardin des Tuileries among others; the 2026 programme extended to nine locations, with Miu Miu as its named partner. Conversations and a film strand run alongside.

01Perché è rilevante

Paris in October has become the strongest week in the European art calendar after Basel in June, and the shift happened quickly. International galleries opened Paris spaces through the 2020s, the auction houses moved material into their Paris October sales, and the museums began scheduling their season openings against the fair. The fair did not create that momentum on its own, but it gave it a fixed date.

Our reading is that Art Basel Paris matters less for volume than for adjacency. A collector spends three days here and can see the fair, four or five satellite fairs, the season's museum openings and two auction houses without leaving the first eight arrondissements. Very few weeks anywhere offer that density, and it is why the week now draws American and Asian collectors who would once have flown only to London in October.

02La settimana intorno all'evento

Paris art week is compact and walkable in a way no other fair week is. Paris Internationale, the young-gallery fair that predates Art Basel's arrival and moves into a different unrenovated building each year, is the essential second stop; Asia Now, Offscreen and Design Miami's Paris edition fill out the rest. Christie's on Avenue Matignon and Sotheby's on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré hold October sales timed to the week, and the Marais and Saint-Germain galleries coordinate late openings.

The museums treat it as the start of the season. The Bourse de Commerce, the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the Palais de Tokyo, the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, Lafayette Anticipations and the Petit Palais directly across Avenue Winston Churchill from the fair all open or extend major exhibitions for it. Central hotels fill, restaurant availability tightens sharply in the 1st, 6th, 7th and 8th arrondissements, and taxis around the Champs-Élysées are slow at closing time. Because so much of the Public Program is outdoors and unticketed, a visitor with no fair ticket at all can still spend a full day on it.

03Quando arrivare

Wednesday if you hold a first-day preview card. Thursday morning otherwise, in time for the afternoon vernissage. On a public ticket, Thursday evening is the best arrival: it gives Friday morning for the satellites and the auction previews before the fair fills, and leaves Saturday for the museums. Sunday is quiet and pleasant inside the Grand Palais. Most of the trade leaves Saturday night, so Sunday flights and trains are unusually easy.

04Dove alloggiare

The fair sits between the Champs-Élysées and the Seine, so the 8th arrondissement is the obvious base and the most expensive; the Plaza Athénée, Le Bristol and the Crillon are the landmark addresses along that axis and their bars function as meeting points. Saint-Germain in the 6th is the better choice for anyone whose week is really about galleries and museums, and the walk across the Pont de la Concorde takes twenty minutes. The Marais in the 3rd and 4th puts you inside the densest gallery district and among the satellite fairs. The 9th around Saint-Georges and the 10th near Canal Saint-Martin have more availability and a short Metro ride. Rooms in the central arrondissements are difficult from about six weeks out.

05Accesso e ospitalità

The structure follows the group's standard. Two invitation-only Preview Days precede the public run, on the Wednesday and Thursday, with First Choice cardholders entering first; the Thursday afternoon vernissage, published by the fair as 2pm to 8pm, is the broader invitation event. Preview access is not sold. Cards come from Art Basel itself and from exhibiting galleries, who allocate them to their own collectors. Public tickets for Friday to Sunday, 11am to 7pm, are sold on artbasel.com and at the door; this record does not quote prices, which the organizer publishes annually. The Public Program across the city is free and needs no ticket, as does Conversations subject to booking. Corporate hospitality on site is partner-run and invitation-based rather than sold.

06Dove si svolge l'attività sociale

The immediate geography is the Avenue Winston Churchill, the Petit Palais courtyard and its café opposite the fair, and the Champs-Élysées hotel bars a few minutes north. In the evening, activity moves to Saint-Germain, where the Rue de Seine and Rue Mazarine galleries hold openings and the cafes on the Boulevard Saint-Germain fill, and to the Marais around the Rue de Turenne and Rue Debelleyme. Place Vendôme and the Tuileries carry whatever the Public Program has placed there and stay busy into the evening. Palais de Tokyo's late opening hours make it the reliable last stop. Restaurants in the 8th book out; the 9th, 10th and 11th absorb the rest of the week comfortably.

07Come arrivare

Aviazione commercialeCharles de Gaulle (CDG) handles most long-haul traffic, 45 minutes to an hour from the 8th arrondissement by road and about 35 minutes on the RER B to Châtelet. Orly (ORY) is closer for European and domestic flights, with Metro line 14 running directly into the centre. Beauvais serves low-cost carriers and is over an hour out.
TrenoEurostar from London St Pancras reaches Gare du Nord in about two and a quarter hours, and TGV services connect Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne, Geneva, Zurich, Basel, Lyon, Marseille and Bordeaux. Gare du Nord, Gare de l'Est and Gare de Lyon are all within twenty minutes of the Grand Palais by Metro or taxi.
AutoDriving in central Paris during the week is unrewarding: the low-emission zone applies, the quays and the Champs-Élysées congest badly, and parking near the Grand Palais is minimal. Metro lines 1, 9 and 13 and RER C all stop within a few minutes' walk of the venue.
Aviazione privataParis-Le Bourget is Europe's busiest business aviation airport and sits about 25 minutes north of the centre outside peak traffic. Toussus-le-Noble and Pontoise take smaller aircraft. Slots at Le Bourget tighten during fair week but rarely to the point of being unobtainable.
ElicotteroHeliport de Paris-Issy-les-Moulineaux is the only helicopter facility inside the city and handles transfers to Le Bourget and the Normandy coast; noise restrictions limit its use.

08Aspetti pratici

AbbigliamentoBetter dressed than Basel, less dressed up than the fashion weeks. Tailoring, good coats and shoes that survive cobbles; the walk between fair, satellites and dinners is long and mostly outdoors. Late October in Paris is cold and often wet, so an actual coat matters. Evening events are smart but very rarely black tie.
MeteoLate October in Paris is cool and frequently wet, with daytime highs typically in the mid-teens Celsius, single-figure nights, and short daylight that ends around 6.30pm before the clocks change at the end of the month. Rain is likely at some point in any three-day stay. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
Come spostarsiThe Metro is the fastest way across the city during the week and Line 1 runs directly along the Champs-Élysées. Taxis and ride-hailing are slow around the Grand Palais at closing time and after the vernissage. Walking between the 1st, 6th, 7th and 8th arrondissements is usually quicker than either. Vélib bicycles are widely available but the Right Bank quays are busy.
HotelCentral Paris does not empty in October, so the fair sits on top of an already busy month and rates rise rather than spike. Availability in the 6th, 7th and 8th becomes thin about six weeks out; the 9th, 10th, 11th and 17th hold longer. Minimum-stay requirements are uncommon.
RistorantiBookings in the 8th and 6th tighten from three to four weeks ahead, and the small number of restaurants the trade favours go earlier than that. Brasseries take walk-ins late. Several galleries and partners run buyouts on the Wednesday and Thursday nights, which removes some capacity without announcement.
Tempistiche di prenotazioneHotels ideally by early September for a late-October stay. Restaurants three to four weeks ahead in the central arrondissements. Public tickets are sold online in advance and at the door, and the Friday is generally the busiest public day.
BigliettiPublic admission covers Friday to Sunday, 11am to 7pm, with single-day and multi-day tickets sold on artbasel.com. Prices are published by the organizer each year and are not reproduced here because the current figures were not verified for this record. The citywide Public Program, including any commissions at Place Vendôme and in the Tuileries, is free and unticketed.
OspitalitàPreview cards are issued by Art Basel and distributed by exhibiting galleries and partners; they are not sold. UBS as global lead partner operates a client lounge in the building, with smaller partner spaces elsewhere. Miu Miu partners the Public Program. Beyond the fair, the week's hospitality belongs largely to galleries, auction houses and the fashion houses, and is invitation-based; the free outdoor programme and the museums are the public equivalent.

09Storia

The Foire Internationale d'Art Contemporain, FIAC, ran in Paris from 1974 and held the Grand Palais from 2006. In 2022 the Réunion des Musées Nationaux-Grand Palais awarded the venue's autumn contemporary art slot to MCH Group instead, ending FIAC's run and giving Art Basel a Paris fair at short notice. Contractual constraints meant the first two editions were staged as Paris+ par Art Basel.

The Grand Palais was closed for restoration during that period, so the 2022 and 2023 editions ran in a temporary structure on the Champ de Mars. The fair moved into the restored Grand Palais for 2024 and took its final name at the same time. That building, its nave reopened after several years of work, is the reason the Paris edition established a distinct identity so fast rather than reading as a French annex of Basel.

10Chi è presente

European collectors in the greatest concentration of the year outside Basel, with substantial American and increasing East Asian attendance; the Paris gallery scene, which has expanded sharply since 2022; museum and foundation curators opening their season; auction specialists working the October sales; and a heavy luxury and fashion contingent, given that most of the major French houses are headquartered within walking distance of the fair.
