ARCOmadrid takes two halls at IFEMA, the exhibition centre beside Madrid's airport, for five days at the start of March. It runs to roughly two hundred galleries and its defining characteristic is geographic: Latin American participation regularly exceeds thirty per cent of the fair, drawn from a dozen countries, which makes ARCO the principal European meeting point for that market. A main gallery floor is separated from curated sections that change each year: a central thematic project, ARCO2045 in 2026 and ARCO2046 in 2027, alongside Opening, for galleries under eight years old, and Profiles, which focuses on Latin American art. The fair opens with days reserved for professionals before general admission from Friday afternoon, and closes on the Sunday with the largest public attendance of any European art fair.

01Warum es relevant ist

ARCO is the oldest of the major continental fairs after Basel and the one with the clearest regional purpose. For Spanish and Portuguese galleries it is the year's principal trading event, and for Latin American galleries the most efficient way to reach European collectors without crossing to Basel or Paris.

Our reading is that its position has weakened commercially and held culturally. The largest international galleries now concentrate on Basel, Paris and the Frieze fairs. What ARCO has instead is a genuinely national audience, a serious institutional programme and a Latin American depth nobody else offers.

02Die Woche darum

Madrid Art Week wraps several smaller fairs around ARCO. Art Madrid sets up in the Galería de Cristal at the Palacio de Cibeles, and Urvanity, Drawing Room, JustMad and Hybrid occupy hotels and historic buildings across the city, all far easier to reach than IFEMA. The institutions are Madrid's real strength: the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen-Bornemisza sit within ten minutes of each other on the Paseo del Arte and all three schedule major exhibitions to the week, with Matadero Madrid, CentroCentro and La Casa Encendida alongside. The commercial galleries cluster on Calle Doctor Fourquet in Lavapiés, behind the Reina Sofía. Early March is low season for tourism, which makes the week comparatively good value.

03Anreisezeitpunkt

Wednesday if you have professional accreditation; the first two days are when the trade works. On a general ticket, Friday afternoon or Saturday morning is the moment to go, and Sunday is extremely busy. The fair itself takes half a day. Keep one full day for the Paseo del Arte museums and one evening for the Doctor Fourquet galleries.

04Unterkunft

The centre is where to be, not IFEMA. Salamanca is the most expensive and closest to the Metro line that runs to the fair. The Paseo del Prado and Retiro area puts the three main museums at the door, with the Ritz and the Palace as the familiar reference points. Chueca and Justicia are livelier and full of small hotels; Lavapiés and La Latina are cheaper and closest to the gallery street.

05Zugang und Hospitality

IFEMA runs the fair on a professional-first structure: the opening days are restricted to accredited professionals, press and invited collectors, and general admission begins on the Friday afternoon. Tickets for the public days are sold on the ARCO website and at IFEMA, with prices published each year by the organizer and not reproduced here. Professional accreditation is applied for through IFEMA rather than bought. The Reina Sofía, the Prado and the Thyssen all publish free-admission windows worth planning around, and the Doctor Fourquet gallery openings are free.

06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet

IFEMA has no social life of its own, so the week happens in the city. The evening runs through Chueca and Justicia around the Plaza de Chueca and Calle Barquillo; through Lavapiés and the streets around Doctor Fourquet after the gallery openings; and through La Latina, where the Cava Baja is the densest run of bars in Madrid. Salamanca holds the more formal dinners along Calle Jorge Juan. The terraces of the Círculo de Bellas Artes and the Palacio de Cibeles have the best views over the centre and are open to anyone with the price of a drink.

07Anreise

LinienluftfahrtAdolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas (MAD) is immediately beside IFEMA, five minutes away, and is one of Europe's largest hubs with the densest connections to Latin America of any European airport. Metro line 8 links the airport, the Feria de Madrid station at IFEMA and Nuevos Ministerios in the city in about twenty minutes.
BahnAVE high-speed trains reach Barcelona in about two and a half hours, Seville, Málaga and Valencia in two to three, and Paris via Barcelona. Atocha and Chamartín are the main stations; Chamartín is closer to IFEMA and on the same Metro line.
AutoThe M-11 and A-2 serve IFEMA and parking there is extensive, but the approach roads congest during the fair. Madrid's centre has a low-emission zone and driving in it is unrewarding; the Metro and walking are faster.
PrivatluftfahrtMadrid-Barajas has business aviation terminals and Cuatro Vientos handles smaller aircraft southwest of the city. Torrejón is also used. Slot pressure during ARCO is modest by the standards of other fair weeks.
HubschrauberThere is no routine helicopter transfer service for the fair; Barajas is close enough to IFEMA that it would serve no purpose.

08Praktische Hinweise

KleidungMadrid dresses well and the fair reflects it, though nothing is formal. Tailoring or good casual, and a coat: early March is cold, particularly at night, and the walk between the centre's museums and bars is entirely outdoors. Comfortable shoes for IFEMA's very long halls.
WetterEarly March in Madrid is cold and usually dry, with daytime highs typically in the low teens Celsius and nights close to freezing, and the high, clear light the city is known for. Rain is possible but the month is not among the wettest. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
Vor Ort navigierenMetro line 8 from Nuevos Ministerios to Feria de Madrid is the fastest route to IFEMA and takes about fifteen minutes; taxis take longer during the fair. Within the centre everything is walkable and the Metro is cheap and frequent. Madrid eats and goes out late, so plan the last leg of each evening around a night bus or a taxi.
HotelsEarly March is low season for Madrid tourism, so ARCO raises rates from a low base rather than a high one, and the city remains among the better-value fair destinations. Central hotels tighten from about a month out. Airport and IFEMA-adjacent hotels are always available and always a mistake for a week in Madrid.
RestaurantsThe best-known kitchens in Salamanca and the centre tighten during the week and galleries take private rooms for client dinners. Madrid's tapas culture means an unplanned evening is never a problem: the Cava Baja, Lavapiés and Chueca take walk-ins all night. Book two to three weeks ahead for anything specific.
ReservierungszeitpunktHotels three to four weeks ahead. Restaurants two to three weeks for the well-known rooms. Public tickets are sold online in advance and at IFEMA; the Saturday and Sunday are by far the busiest days.
TicketsPublic admission runs from the Friday afternoon through Sunday, with tickets sold on the ARCO site and at IFEMA. The organizer publishes prices each year and they are not stated here because they were not verified for this record. The opening days require professional accreditation, applied for through IFEMA. The satellite fairs across the centre sell their own tickets, and the Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen all operate published free-entry windows.
HospitalityProfessional accreditation rather than a purchased VIP tier governs the opening days, and IFEMA runs an invited-collector programme reported at several hundred guests. On-site hospitality is partner-run and modest. The wider week's dinners belong to galleries, foundations and regional cultural bodies. The public alternative is unusually strong: the fair's own weekend is fully open, and Madrid's three great museums all publish free-admission hours.

09Geschichte

ARCO was founded in 1982, seven years after the end of the Franco dictatorship, as part of a wider opening of Spanish cultural life, and grew into the country's most visible contemporary art institution. For much of its history it ran a guest-country programme, inviting a national delegation each year, which built its Latin American and later its Asian and African relationships. It is organized by IFEMA MADRID, the city's publicly owned exhibition body, which distinguishes it from the privately held fairs it competes with.

10Wer ist dort

Spanish and Portuguese collectors and galleries in the greatest numbers, with the strongest Latin American gallery and collector presence of any European fair; museum and foundation directors from across Spain, where regional public collections are significant buyers; European dealers and advisers; and a very large general Spanish public across the weekend, for whom ARCO is a national cultural event rather than a trade fair.
