Antigua Sailing Week has spent more than half a century as the Eastern Caribbean's main regatta, and it changed shape substantially for its 2026 edition. Where the traditional week ran five races from a fixed harbor base with a layday in between, the organizer moved in 2026 to a shorter, four-day format that circles Antigua itself, with the fleet stopping each night at a different beach, marina or anchorage for Caribbean food and music rather than returning to the same dock. Racing remains available on marked courses for those who want it, but the organizer built the new format explicitly around cruising boats and bareboat charterers as much as dedicated racers.

The fleet still starts and finishes around English Harbour and the National Sailing Academy, a working sailing center on Dockyard Drive, and the week still ends with an official prizegiving, historically hosted by Antigua and Barbuda's Governor-General. At its peak the regatta drew 150 to 200 yachts; recent traditional-format editions settled to roughly 100 boats and some 1,500 sailors from more than twenty countries before the redesign.

01Waarom het relevant is

This is the event that anchors Antigua's reputation as a sailing destination and, historically, the Caribbean's winter-into-spring sailing season generally. Its 2026 reinvention is itself a notable episode in the wider story of competitive sailing's audience: the organizer has said openly that fewer race boats were able to commit to a full week while interest from cruising sailors was rising, and remaking a nearly sixty-year-old regatta around that shift is a more consequential decision than it might first appear, since Antigua Sailing Week has previously spun off other fixtures — the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta in 1988 and, with the Royal Ocean Racing Club, the RORC Caribbean 600 in 2009 — when it needed to serve a part of its audience the main week no longer suited.

02De week eromheen

Late April in Antigua sits at the tail of the dry season and the tail of the Caribbean's winter sailing calendar, before the slower, hotter months set in. English Harbour and the neighboring Falmouth Harbour, already a working base for cruising and charter yachts, fill further with the regatta fleet and its support boats, and the roads around the dockyard become busy in the mornings and around each evening's stop. Because the fleet now moves around the island rather than staying in one place, the visible effect is spread across several anchorages over the four days rather than concentrated in a single town.

03Wanneer aan te komen

Arrive the day before racing begins to see the fleet assemble at English Harbour; because the current format finishes at a different anchorage each night, a spectator following the whole event needs to move with it rather than stay in one place. The closing prizegiving is the natural point to plan a final evening around.

04Waar te verblijven

English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour are the practical base, within walking distance of the National Sailing Academy and Nelson's Dockyard, and have the island's largest concentration of marine-focused guesthouses and small hotels. St. John's, the capital, is a common lower-cost alternative with a longer commute. Given the new island-circling format, a rental car or water taxi is useful for following the fleet to other stops.

05Toegang en hospitality

Entry to sail is by registration through the organizer's website, priced per foot of boat length, with early-registration discounts published directly on the site. Watching from shore at English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour or any of the week's other stops is free and unticketed; the evening beach and marina gatherings are generally open to visitors as well as participants, consistent with the event's destination-sailing format.

06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt

Nelson's Dockyard and the waterfront at English Harbour are the historic heart of Antigua sailing and the most consistent gathering point; Falmouth Harbour's marinas and restaurants take much of the everyday crew traffic. Under the current format, each night's stop becomes its own temporary social center, with the organizer describing beach barbecues and music as part of the programme rather than any single fixed venue.

07Hoe u er komt

Commerciële luchtvaartV.C. Bird International Airport (ANU), outside St. John's, has direct flights from the eastern United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, plus regional connections across the Caribbean; it is about 30-40 minutes by road from English Harbour.
TreinNone.
AutoA rental car is useful for reaching English Harbour from the airport and for following the fleet between anchorages under the current format; roads are narrow but the island is small.
PrivéluchtvaartV.C. Bird International handles business aviation alongside its commercial traffic.
HelikopterNo scheduled helicopter service is documented for the event.
JachthavensNelson's Dockyard Marina, the Antigua Superyacht Marina and the Falmouth Harbour Marina cluster together at English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour and are the regatta's operational base; berths should be arranged well ahead through the marinas directly.

08Praktische informatie

DresscodeCasual sailing and beach dress throughout; the evening stops are outdoor, informal gatherings rather than dressed events.
WeerLate April in Antigua is warm and generally dry, with daytime temperatures typically in the high twenties to low thirties Celsius and reliable trade winds, near the end of the island's dry season. No station normals were sourced for this record.
Verplaatsing ter plaatseA rental car or arranged water transport is more useful now than under the old single-harbor format, since the fleet and its followers move to a different stop each night.
HotelsEnglish Harbour and Falmouth Harbour have limited rooms relative to demand during the week; booking several months ahead is standard practice for the Caribbean's winter-into-spring sailing season generally.
RestaurantsRestaurants around English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour are busy throughout the week; the new format's nightly stops each bring their own food and entertainment as part of the programme rather than relying solely on fixed restaurants.
ReserveringstimingAccommodation three to six months ahead is typical for this stretch of the Caribbean season. Boat registration is taken directly through the organizer's website, with a published early-entry discount for registering by the preceding December.
TicketsThere is no spectator ticket. Racing and cruising-in-company entry is by registration through the organizer at a published per-foot rate; watching from shore or from the harbor is free throughout.
HospitalityThe organizer's own hospitality is limited to the programme's evening food and music stops, which are described as open rather than exclusive. Any additional entertaining by sponsors, charter operators or crews is private and is not described here.

09Geschiedenis

The Antigua & Barbuda Hotels & Tourism Association founded the regatta in 1968 (a Wikipedia account puts the first edition a year earlier, in 1967, a discrepancy not resolved here) as a way of extending the island's tourist season into the Caribbean sailing calendar. It grew across the following decades into one of the best-known regattas in the region, drawing fleets of up to 200 boats at its height, and endured its first outright cancellation in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2026 shift to a shorter, circumnavigation-based format is described by the organizer as a response to changing patterns in who sails competitively and who does not, rather than a retreat from the event's ambitions.

10Wie is er

A mix of dedicated racing sailors, charter and bareboat crews, and cruising sailors based in the Caribbean for the winter season; the National Sailing Academy's staff and volunteers; and Antigua's marine-tourism trade, for whom the week is a significant annual draw.

2026 · 57th edition · 57th edition VoltooidThe organizer's dedicated 'About ASW 2026' page states the 57th edition ran 22-26 April 2026 under a new shorter, destination-sailing format that circles the island with nightly stops rather than racing out of a single harbor. Note that the organizer's own general 'next five years' dates page separately listed 25 April-1 May 2026, which appears to be a stale mechanical projection predating the format change; the dedicated 2026 event page is treated as authoritative here.
