The gala's other function is that it gives the Cannes Film Festival its only genuine crossover evening: film, fashion, music and the luxury groups that sponsor all three are in one room, which happens nowhere else during the festival.

The gala sits inside the Cannes Film Festival's final week, which is the most congested stretch of the Riviera's year apart from the Monaco Grand Prix. In 2026 the festival ran 12 to 23 May and the gala fell on the 21st, two days before the closing ceremony, when the competition screenings are finishing and a large part of the industry has already flown home - which is why the gala's audience skews toward the talent and sponsor side rather than the market side.

The practical consequence is traffic on one road. Cap d'Antibes is reached by a single coastal route from Juan-les-Pins and the approach to the Hotel du Cap is a narrow drive; arrivals are staged over a long window and the return to Cannes after midnight is slow. Hotels across Cannes, Antibes, Juan-les-Pins and Cap d'Antibes are at festival capacity, and the yacht anchorages off the Cap and in the Golfe-Juan are full. Anyone in the area without a ticket should know the gala is entirely invisible from outside: the hotel is set in its own park behind gates, and unlike the Palais des Festivals red carpet there is nothing to watch.

There is no public geography to this evening, which is worth saying plainly: the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc stands in a gated park at the end of Cap d'Antibes and the gala is invisible from any road or path. The public Riviera around it is the answer for everyone else - the Sentier du Littoral coastal footpath around the Cap, the Plage de la Garoupe, the Antibes old town market and the Picasso museum in the Chateau Grimaldi, all open and none requiring a ticket. amfAR was created in September 1985 from the merger of two organisations, the National AIDS Research Foundation in California and the AIDS Medical Foundation in New York, with Elizabeth Taylor, the researcher Mathilde Krim, the physicians Michael Gottlieb and Joseph Sonnabend and the activist Michael Callen among its founders. Taylor, who brought the entertainment industry's fundraising apparatus with her, originated the model of the high-profile benefit that the foundation still runs.

Cinema Against AIDS, as the Cannes gala was originally called, began in 1993 and settled at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, whose isolation at the end of the cape is part of the reason it has stayed there: the hotel can close itself for an evening in a way a venue in Cannes cannot. The gala's totals climbed through the 2000s and peaked in the middle of the last decade before falling back; the 2026 edition's twenty million dollars is described by amfAR as the best result since 2016. The foundation has in the same period built out a circuit of smaller galas in Venice, Palm Beach, Las Vegas and elsewhere, so that Cannes is now the largest node in a year-round fundraising programme rather than a single annual effort.
