Two months of weekends in a Piedmontese market town, built around a ticketed truffle market, a charity auction and the Langhe wine harvest.

Alba is a town of about 30,000 people in the Langhe hills, surrounded by the vineyards that make Barolo and Barbaresco, and for two months each autumn it sells the most expensive agricultural product in Europe. The fair is not a weekend: the 2026 edition ran from 10 October to 6 December, with the Alba White Truffle World Market open every Saturday and Sunday of that span in the Cortile della Maddalena, a covered courtyard in the old center.
The market is the fixed point. Truffle hunters and dealers lay out the week's finds on cloth-covered tables and sell them by weight, with a quality commission on site to verify species and condition — the safeguard that separates Alba's market from a roadside transaction. Around it the organizer runs cooking shows, tastings of Langhe and Roero wines, workshops, and a programme that in 2026 involved more than forty Michelin-starred kitchens.
The fair's most-watched hour is the World White Truffle Auction, held on a Sunday in early November from the Castello di Grinzane Cavour and linked by video to satellite rooms abroad, so that bidders in Hong Kong or Dubai compete with the room in Piedmont. Proceeds go to charity; the organizer states the auction has raised more than seven million euros for philanthropic projects since 1999. Separately, Alba's civic calendar supplies the theatre: the Palio degli Asini, a donkey race between the town's nine districts, and the Baccanale dei Borghi, both staged in October by the borghi rather than by the fair.
01Waarom het relevant is
Alba is the reference market for Tuber magnatum pico, and the price a visitor pays in the Cortile della Maddalena on a given weekend is as close to a public spot price as white truffle has. That is one reason it matters. The other is that the fair sits in the middle of the Langhe in the eight weeks when the harvest is finishing and the restaurants of Barolo, Barbaresco, Monforte and La Morra are at their best, so the fair is the occasion and the hills are the reason. Our reading is that the auction, not the market, is what has internationalized the event: a charity sale with satellite rooms on three continents gave Alba an annual news moment and an audience that had not previously travelled for a food fair. The market itself remains resolutely local in manner, which is its charm and also why the crowds on an October Saturday are enormous.
02De week eromheen
Every autumn weekend in Alba is busy and some are overwhelming: regional reporting puts more than 600,000 visitors across the Langhe, Monferrato and Roero during the fair's run. The old center is closed to traffic, the car parks on the edge of town fill by mid-morning, and the queues for the market form before it opens. Saturday is the heavier day; Sunday mornings are calmer until lunch. Outside Alba the villages hold their own events through October and November, and the wine estates run cellar visits and tastings by appointment. Mid-week in November is the quietest good time to be in the hills, although the market is shut.
03Wanneer aan te komen
Come for a Friday-to-Monday, not for a day. Arrive Friday, spend the afternoon in the villages while Alba is still quiet, take the market early on Saturday morning, and keep Sunday for a long lunch somewhere up in the hills. November weekends are better than October ones: the truffles are usually better, the crowds thinner and the vineyards at their colour.
04Waar te verblijven
Alba itself has limited rooms and they go first, but staying in town means walking to the market. The hill villages are the better answer and the reason most people come: Barolo, La Morra, Monforte d'Alba, Serralunga, Barbaresco and Neive are all within twenty-five minutes and are full of small hotels, agriturismi and converted farmhouses. Bra and Asti have more capacity and less charm. Turin, about an hour and a quarter away, works if the Langhe are full, which on October weekends they are.
05Toegang en hospitality
The World Market is ticketed and the organizer sells entry through its own online box office; no price is quoted here because we did not retrieve the ticketing pages. Much of the rest of the fair — the street programme, the borghi events, the Palio degli Asini and the Baccanale — is public, and the cooking shows, guided tastings and workshops are sold separately and individually. The World White Truffle Auction is not a general-admission event: seats are allocated by the organizer and satellite rooms are arranged through partner institutions abroad. There is no hospitality programme in the commercial sense; the fair's equivalent is a restaurant booking in a village.
06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt
The Cortile della Maddalena and the streets immediately around it, Via Vittorio Emanuele and Piazza Risorgimento, carry the daytime crowd, and the wine bars along them are full from eleven. The real social center of an Alba weekend, though, is lunch and dinner out in the hills — the dining rooms at Barolo, La Morra and Barbaresco, where tables turn once and sittings run to three hours. The castles at Grinzane Cavour and Serralunga and the Barolo wine museum absorb the afternoons.

09Geschiedenis
The first fair was held in 1929, conceived as a way to put a commercial value on a product the Langhe had always dug and mostly eaten at home. The postwar decades turned it from a regional market into a national one, helped by the same Piedmontese export economy that carried Barolo abroad. The auction, added in 1999, was the decisive modern change: by running the sale for charity and linking it to rooms overseas it created an international story each November. Since 2014 the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato vineyard landscape has been a UNESCO World Heritage site, which reframed the whole area as a destination rather than a production zone, and the fair extended its calendar accordingly — it now occupies most of two months instead of two weeks.
10Wie is er
Italian weekend visitors in the largest numbers, many of them from Turin, Milan and Liguria; restaurant buyers, chefs and importers working the market; wine-trade visitors combining the fair with Barolo and Barbaresco appointments; international food travellers, increasingly from northern Europe, North America and East Asia; and the auction's own bidders and philanthropic partners, many of them participating from satellite rooms rather than in Piedmont.
