The Oscars are a vote, and the ceremony is the last four hours of a fifteen-month process. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a professional membership body of roughly 9,900 voting members organized into branches — actors are the largest at about 1,250 — and those branches nominate in their own crafts before the whole membership votes the winners in 24 competitive categories. Best Casting was added at the 98th ceremony in 2026. The Academy publishes the whole calendar years ahead: an eligibility period that matches the calendar year, a submission deadline in November, the Governors Awards the same month, preliminary voting and shortlists in December, nominations voting and the nominations announcement in January, the Nominees Luncheon in February, and final voting closing ten days before the show.

The ceremony itself has been held at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood since 2002. The 3,300-seat house was designed with the broadcast in mind and the Academy's arrangement there runs through the 100th ceremony in 2028, after which it moves to the Peacock Theater downtown. The show runs about three and a half hours, acceptance speeches are capped at 45 seconds, and the Governors Ball follows immediately in the ballroom above the auditorium, where winners have their statuettes engraved on the spot. ABC and Hulu carry it now; from 2029 the broadcast goes to YouTube.

For a visitor this is the hardest night in the calendar to attend and one of the easier weeks to enjoy from outside. Nothing about the ceremony is sold. The arrivals area in front of the theatre is enclosed and credentialed, the blocks of Hollywood Boulevard around it are given over to the build for several days, and the only way into the auditorium is as a nominee, a guest of one, an Academy member or an invited industry attendee. What is genuinely open is the rest of Los Angeles that week: the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Wilshire Boulevard, which the Academy runs and sells tickets to year-round, the Dolby Theatre's own paid tours outside broadcast build periods, and a city whose restaurants, hotel bars and revival cinemas are all busier and more interesting than usual.

01Warum es relevant ist

No other award reorders a film's commercial life to the same degree. A Best Picture nomination extends a theatrical run and resets a library title's value; the acting categories move careers and fee levels; and the campaign economy built around the vote — screenings, guild events, trade advertising, months of travel — is now a recognized line in a specialty distributor's budget. The Academy's own calendar has become the organizing grid of the second half of the film year: festivals in Venice, Telluride, Toronto and London position their premieres against the December shortlists, and the Globes and BAFTAs slot themselves deliberately ahead of the final ballot.

Its place in the social calendar is narrower than its fame suggests, and worth stating plainly. This is a one-night industry ceremony in a working city, not a week-long gathering like Cannes or a destination event like Monaco. In our reading the Oscars matter to the international calendar mainly as a fixed point that everything else in film is timed against, and secondarily as the year's largest single display of jewelry and couture — the houses that dress the carpet treat it as their most valuable evening of the year. The week around it belongs to Los Angeles rather than to visitors.

02Die Woche darum

Hollywood changes and the rest of Los Angeles mostly does not. The boulevard in front of the Dolby is closed for the build in the days before the ceremony, which puts scaffolding and tenting across the Ovation Hollywood complex and moves pedestrian routes around the Hollywood/Highland corner; the Metro station beneath it stays open. Traffic on Highland Avenue and the Cahuenga Pass is worse than usual from Friday and genuinely difficult on the Sunday afternoon.

The wider week is the tail of a season rather than a festival. The guild ceremonies and the Academy's own Nominees Luncheon fall in the preceding weeks; reporting each year describes a dense schedule of studio, agency and magazine receptions across Beverly Hills and West Hollywood on the night itself, none of it open to visitors. What an ordinary visitor can actually do is straightforward: the Academy Museum puts on programming around the ceremony, the city's repertory cinemas run nominated films and related retrospectives, and bars and restaurants across Los Feliz, Silver Lake and West Hollywood show the telecast.

03Anreisezeitpunkt

Arrive Friday and leave Tuesday. The Friday and Saturday are the usable days for anything in Hollywood itself, because Sunday is lost to closures and the Monday is the city's slowest morning of the year. If the point of the trip is the Academy Museum, the nominated films and the industry's mood rather than the ceremony, the week before is better than the weekend of.

04Unterkunft

Four areas, each a different trade-off. Hollywood puts you within walking distance of the theatre and is the one place where the closures actually affect you; its hotels are also where much of the production and broadcast crew stays. West Hollywood and the Sunset Strip are the industry's default, ten to twenty minutes away depending on traffic, with the densest run of hotel bars and restaurants. Beverly Hills is quieter, more formal and the base for most of the evening's arrivals; the Beverly Hilton, the Beverly Wilshire and the Beverly Hills Hotel are the landmarks people navigate by. Downtown is cheaper, well connected by the Metro B Line and sensible if you are also going to the Music Center or the Broad. Santa Monica and Venice are pleasant and too far for a Sunday evening.

05Zugang und Hospitality

The Academy does not sell tickets and there is no public ballot for seats in the auditorium or in the arrivals area. Seats are allocated by the Academy to nominees and their guests, to members, and to invited industry attendees; the tickets are personal and the Academy prohibits their transfer or resale. No official hospitality programme exists and anything advertised as a purchasable Oscars seat, red-carpet pass or after-party invitation should be treated as fraudulent. The two things the Academy does sell to the public are separate from the ceremony: admission to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, open year-round on Wilshire Boulevard at Fairfax, and its screening programme in the museum's theaters. The Dolby Theatre sells guided tours of the auditorium through its own box office when the building is not in broadcast build.

06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet

In public terms, the night is a television event and the city is the venue. Hollywood Boulevard between Highland and Orange is where the crowd gathers against the barriers, and the view of the arrivals structure from Highland Avenue and the upper levels of Ovation Hollywood is as close as anyone without credentials gets. The hotel bars along Sunset in West Hollywood and around the Golden Triangle in Beverly Hills are where the industry is visible before and after, and they are open to customers on most nights of the week even when parts of them are taken for private use on the Sunday. For the rest, the season's social geography is the restaurant districts — Melrose, Beverly Boulevard, Sunset Plaza, Abbot Kinney — plus the Academy Museum, the Egyptian and the New Beverly for screenings.

07Anreise

LinienluftfahrtLos Angeles International (LAX) is 25 km southwest of Hollywood and 30 to 60 minutes by road. Hollywood Burbank (BUR) is closer to the studios and usually quicker through the terminal; Long Beach (LGB) and John Wayne (SNA) in Orange County are useful alternatives when LAX is full.
BahnThe Metro B Line subway stops directly beneath the theatre at Hollywood/Highland and runs to Downtown Los Angeles and Union Station in about twenty minutes, which makes it the only reliable way into Hollywood on ceremony day. Amtrak's long-distance and Pacific Surfliner services use Union Station.
AutoThe US-101 through the Cahuenga Pass and the I-110 and I-10 are the arteries; everything in this city assumes a car. During the ceremony build Hollywood Boulevard is closed around the theatre and parking within several blocks is restricted, so the garages under Ovation Hollywood and on Highland fill early.
PrivatluftfahrtVan Nuys (VNY) in the San Fernando Valley is Los Angeles's principal business-aviation field, twenty to forty minutes from Hollywood over the hill; Burbank and Santa Monica also handle business traffic, and LAX has its own business terminal. Ceremony weekend is a pressured one for slots and parking across all of them.
HubschrauberOn-demand helicopter transfers operate between Van Nuys, Burbank and downtown heliports, but there is no public helipad serving Hollywood Boulevard and no scheduled service relevant to the ceremony.

08Praktische Hinweise

KleidungInside the theatre it is black tie, and the arrivals are the most photographed formal dress code in the world — long gowns, dinner jackets, and jewelry lent by the houses for the evening. Outside it, Los Angeles in March is a city where a good jacket over open-necked shirt is formal enough for almost anywhere, and the only real requirement is something warm for the evening, because the temperature drops sharply after sunset.
WetterMid-March in Los Angeles is mild and changeable: afternoons usually in the high teens to low twenties Celsius, evenings ten degrees cooler, and March is one of the wetter months of a Mediterranean winter pattern, so rain on ceremony day is a live possibility and has forced covered arrivals before. No station normals were sourced for this record, so the summary is qualitative.
Vor Ort navigierenThe Metro B Line beneath Hollywood/Highland is the single most useful piece of transport information for this weekend, because the road closures around the theatre make driving to it pointless. Ride-hail pickup points are pushed several blocks out during the build and the apps are slow to reflect it; walking to Franklin Avenue or Sunset Boulevard before requesting a car is faster. Elsewhere in the city, allow roughly double the mapped driving time between Friday afternoon and Sunday night.
HotelsCeremony weekend is one of the firmest rate weeks of the Los Angeles year in Hollywood, West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, and the hotels closest to the theatre carry production, broadcast and talent bookings held months ahead. The city has enough rooms that something is always available; what is scarce is a good room within walking distance of the closures. Booking by January is normal for the central areas.
RestaurantsTables in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills tighten from the Thursday, and a number of restaurants and hotel dining rooms are taken entirely for private use on the Sunday evening, so published opening hours for that night should not be relied on. Monday is the quietest night of the year in the same neighborhoods and the easiest time to eat well.
ReservierungszeitpunktHotels in the central areas are best secured by January for a March ceremony. Restaurant tables for the Friday and Saturday are worth booking two to four weeks ahead; the Sunday itself is unpredictable. Academy Museum admission is timed and should be booked in advance for the ceremony weekend, and Dolby Theatre tours do not run during the broadcast build.
TicketsThere is no public ticket to the ceremony. The Academy allocates seats to nominees and their guests, to its own members and to invited industry attendees, and the tickets are non-transferable. Resale and brokered “Oscars packages” are not sanctioned by the Academy. Public ticketing exists only for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and its screenings, and for the Dolby Theatre's guided tours; the Academy publishes current museum admission and membership terms on oscars.org and no prices are reproduced here because none were fetched for this record.
HospitalityThe Academy runs no purchasable hospitality programme. The Governors Ball immediately after the ceremony is for those who were in the auditorium. The broadcast's sponsors and the Academy's partners operate their own invitation-based programmes, and the rest of the evening's receptions are staged by studios, agencies and publications on their own guest lists. Nothing in that ecosystem is sold to visitors, and offers to the contrary should be treated as fraud.

09Geschichte

The first awards were handed out on May 16, 1929 at a private dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel: about 270 guests, fifteen minutes, fifteen statuettes, and the winners already known in advance. The statuette — a 13.5-inch, 8.5-pound Art Deco figure on a five-spoke reel for the Academy's founding branches — has barely changed, though its metal has: gold-plated bronze, then Britannia metal, plaster during the Second World War, and since 2016 bronze again under 24-karat gold.

The venue history tracks the industry's own geography. Hotel ballrooms through the 1930s, Grauman's Chinese and the Shrine Auditorium in the 1940s, the Pantages through the 1950s, then the long Dorothy Chandler and Shrine period, and from 2002 a theatre built for the purpose on Hollywood Boulevard. Television arrived in 1953 and made the ceremony a mass event; the audience peaked at 57.25 million in 1998 and fell to 10.4 million in the pandemic year of 2021 before recovering to the high teens. Two corrections shaped the modern Academy: the 2016 membership expansion and diversification following criticism of an overwhelmingly white, male and older voting body, and a 2025 rule requiring members to have watched every nominated film in a category before voting in it.

10Wer ist dort

Nominees and their families, agents and publicists; Academy members across the craft branches, who make up much of the house; studio, streamer and specialty-distributor executives; presenters and performers booked for the broadcast; the jewelry, watch and fashion houses who dress the arrivals and the stylists who place their pieces; and a large accredited press and photography corps working the arrivals area and the backstage press room.
