The fair that ran for seventeen editions as Abu Dhabi Art has become Frieze Abu Dhabi. The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, which founded and funded it, handed operation to Frieze from 2026 while remaining the partner; the venue, Manarat Al Saadiyat in the Saadiyat Cultural District, and the November slot are unchanged. The inaugural Frieze edition brought 84 galleries from 64 cities across 37 countries, a deliberately compact list, and included a Frieze Masters section importing the London fair's historical remit. Opening hours are the most distinctive practical fact about it: the fair runs from two in the afternoon until nine at night, which suits the Gulf's rhythm and makes the whole event an evening one.

01Warum es relevant ist

Abu Dhabi has spent two decades building museums rather than a market, and the fair was always the state's instrument rather than a commercial event that grew on its own. Handing it to Frieze is an attempt to convert institutional weight into trade activity, and it arrives in the same year as Art Basel Qatar.

Our reading is that the Gulf now has more international art fairs than its market has demonstrated it can support, and that Abu Dhabi's advantage is not the fair but the island it sits on. The Louvre Abu Dhabi and its neighbours give the November week a reason to exist that no amount of gallery recruitment could manufacture.

02Die Woche darum

The Saadiyat Cultural District is the week. Manarat Al Saadiyat is an exhibition and arts centre in its own right; the Louvre Abu Dhabi, with its Jean Nouvel dome over the water, is a few minutes away, and further museums in the district have been opening in stages. Beyond the island, the Cultural Foundation in the old city, Warehouse421 in Mina Zayed and Qasr Al Hosn all run exhibitions, and Dubai is ninety minutes up the coast. Late November is also the start of Abu Dhabi's event season, with the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Yas Marina and Abu Dhabi Finance Week following in early December, so hotel demand builds through the month.

03Anreisezeitpunkt

Wednesday if you hold a preview invitation. Because the fair opens at two in the afternoon, mornings are free for the museums, which is the sensible way to plan: the Louvre Abu Dhabi in the morning, the fair from mid-afternoon, dinner late. Two full days covers the fair and Saadiyat; a third allows Dubai or Al Ain.

04Unterkunft

Saadiyat Island puts the fair and the museums within walking or shuttle distance and is the obvious base, with beach resorts along its eastern shore. Al Maryah Island and the Corniche hold the business hotels and are fifteen to twenty minutes away. The Yas Island resorts are further out and busy in the run-up to the Grand Prix. Abu Dhabi has far more rooms than the fair requires.

05Zugang und Hospitality

The organizer publishes a simple structure: an invitation-only VIP preview on the Thursday from 2pm to 9pm, then public days from Friday to Sunday on the same hours. Tickets for the public days are sold through the fair's website; prices are published by the organizer and are not reproduced here. Frieze membership carries preview access across the group's fairs. Manarat Al Saadiyat's own galleries and much of the surrounding cultural programme are free or cheaply ticketed, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi charges its own admission.

06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet

Saadiyat's cultural district is designed to be walked and the plaza between Manarat Al Saadiyat and the Louvre carries the evening movement, with the museum's covered outdoor spaces and waterside restaurants open late. Beyond the island, the Corniche's promenade and beach, Al Maryah Island's restaurant terraces and the older cafés around Qasr Al Hosn take the rest of the week. Warehouse421 in Mina Zayed is the closest thing Abu Dhabi has to a gallery district. Alcohol is served in licensed hotels and venues only.

07Anreise

LinienluftfahrtZayed International (AUH) is Etihad's hub and about 30 minutes from Saadiyat Island. Dubai International (DXB) is 90 minutes to two hours away by road and offers far more routes; many visitors fly into Dubai and drive.
BahnThere is no passenger rail into Abu Dhabi at present, though the Etihad Rail network is under development. Intercity coaches connect Abu Dhabi and Dubai frequently.
AutoThe emirate is built for driving and taxis and ride-hailing are inexpensive. The Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street and the E11 connect the islands and the mainland. Saadiyat is reached by bridge from the city in about fifteen minutes. Parking at Manarat Al Saadiyat is organized for the fair.
PrivatluftfahrtAl Bateen Executive Airport sits inside the city and is one of the region's dedicated business aviation airports, a few minutes from the Corniche; Zayed International also handles private movements.
HubschrauberCharter helicopter transfers operate between Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Yas Island, and are used more during the Grand Prix period than for the fair.
MarinasYas Marina, Al Bateen Marina and the Emirates Palace marina take visiting yachts; Yas Marina is heavily committed around the Grand Prix in early December.

08Praktische Hinweise

KleidungSmart and modest. The UAE expects shoulders and knees covered in public places outside hotels and beach resorts, and the museums and Qasr Al Hosn ask for the same. November evenings are mild enough for a light jacket. No formal dress code is published for the fair.
WetterMid to late November is one of the best periods of the Abu Dhabi year: daytime highs typically around thirty Celsius falling into the low twenties at night, low humidity by Gulf standards and almost no rain. The fair's late-afternoon opening hours exist to put visitors outdoors at the pleasantest part of the day. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
Vor Ort navigierenTaxis and ride-hailing are cheap and are the standard way to move; the public bus network is limited for visitors. Saadiyat Island is fifteen minutes from the city centre by road and shuttles usually run between the fair and the main hotel clusters. Allow ninety minutes to two hours for the drive to or from Dubai, longer at rush hour.
HotelsAbu Dhabi has substantial hotel capacity and the fair alone does not strain it. Rates climb through November toward the Grand Prix in early December, so a later-November edition is more expensive than an earlier one. Saadiyat's own resorts fill first because of the walking distance.
RestaurantsCapacity is ample and a week's notice covers most bookings. The exceptions are the restaurants at the Saadiyat and Emirates Palace resorts, which fill during the fair and in the Grand Prix build-up. Because the fair runs until nine, dinner is late by default.
ReservierungszeitpunktHotels three to four weeks ahead, earlier if the edition falls close to the Grand Prix. Restaurants one to two weeks. Tickets are sold online in advance and at the venue.
TicketsPublic admission covers Friday to Sunday, 2pm to 9pm, with tickets sold through the fair's website. Prices are published by the organizer each edition and are not reproduced here. The Thursday VIP preview is invitation-only and is not sold. The Louvre Abu Dhabi and the other Saadiyat institutions charge their own separate admission, and Manarat Al Saadiyat's own galleries are generally free.
HospitalityThe Thursday preview is by invitation from Frieze and from exhibiting galleries; Frieze membership carries preview access across the group's fairs. The Department of Culture and Tourism hosts its own institutional and press programme around the fair, which is not publicly bookable. Because the surrounding cultural infrastructure is state-funded and open, the free and cheap public alternatives are unusually good.

09Geschichte

Abu Dhabi Art was founded in 2007 as the Abu Dhabi Art Fair and took its shorter name in 2009, when the emirate announced the Saadiyat Cultural District and its agreements with the Louvre and the Guggenheim. For most of its life it was organized directly by the Department of Culture and Tourism, and its programme ran well beyond the booths, with commissions placed in Abu Dhabi's neighbourhoods and in Al Ain and Al Dhafra. The Louvre Abu Dhabi opened on Saadiyat in 2017. In 2025 the emirate announced that Frieze would take over from 2026.

10Wer ist dort

Emirati and wider Gulf collectors and institutional buyers, with strong Levantine, Iranian, South Asian and North African representation; the Department of Culture and Tourism's own museum and acquisition teams; regional galleries; an international dealer contingent that has grown with Frieze's involvement; and Abu Dhabi's expatriate resident population, which supplies most of the public attendance.
