Canada's financial and cultural capital, busiest each September for its film festival.

Toronto is Canada's largest city, with about 2.8 million people in the city proper and 6.2 million across the metropolitan area, and its financial capital: the Toronto Stock Exchange and the country's five largest banks are headquartered here. It is also one of the most multicultural cities in the world, with about half its residents born outside Canada and more than two hundred ethnic origins represented, a mix that shows up directly in its food and its neighborhoods.

The single fixture this record tracks here is the Toronto International Film Festival, eleven days each September when downtown's Entertainment District closes King Street West to traffic and roughly four hundred films screen for an audience rather than a jury. The rest of Toronto's year runs on its own civic and multicultural calendar rather than on any international social circuit.

03重要な理由

Toronto's claim on this calendar rests almost entirely on one festival, but that festival works differently from Cannes or Venice: its top prize, the People's Choice Award, is decided by ordinary ticket holders rather than a jury, and its record of anticipating the Academy Awards has turned an audience reaction in Toronto into a commercial signal studios take seriously. In our reading, that is also why TIFF sits immediately after Venice and Telluride each year rather than competing with them: distributors use it to read North American audiences before committing to a wider release.

08この場所の変化

Toronto's year swings between a long, cold winter carried largely underground through the PATH network and a compressed summer and early-autumn run of festivals, culminating in TIFF each September, after which the city returns to its own civic rhythm rather than an international one.

09沿革

Toronto grew from the town of York, founded in 1793, into Canada's largest city through the twentieth century, overtaking Montreal as the country's economic capital by the 1970s. The amalgamation of the former City of Toronto with five surrounding municipalities in 1998 created the city's current boundaries. The film festival began in 1976 as the Festival of Festivals, assembling a program from other festivals' selections, before growing into an event built around premieres and, distinctively, a publicly voted audience award.
