Saint-Barthelemy is a 25-square-kilometer volcanic island in the French West Indies, 30 kilometers southeast of Sint Maarten, with a population of about 10,660 people descended largely from early French settlers and later Portuguese arrivals. It has been a French overseas collectivity, separate from Guadeloupe, since 2007, uses the euro, and left the European Union's outermost-region status in 2012, which keeps it outside the EU's VAT and customs union and helps sustain its duty-free retail economy.

The island's calendar runs opposite to its own weather. The dry, cooler season from December to April is both the pleasantest time to visit and the peak of the international yachting calendar, when much of the same fleet that summers in the Mediterranean relocates to the Caribbean and gathers in Gustavia's harbour. Hurricane season, June through November, is the island's off-season, when hotel and restaurant capacity contracts and villa rates fall.

03لماذا يهم

St Barts holds its place on the yachting calendar less because of any one event than because it functions as the Caribbean's default endpoint for a fleet that spends the rest of the year in the Mediterranean: the same large sailing and motor yachts that fill Antibes, Palma and Monaco each summer relocate to the Caribbean for the winter, and St Barts, rather than any larger island, is where a large share of them choose to gather. In our reading, New Year's Eve in Gustavia harbour, not the Bucket Regatta, is the island's real signature week, precisely because it is the one week that requires no ticket, trophy or invitation to witness, only a harbourside table and a view of the bay.

فبرايرHigh season continues at its most crowded, with villa and charter rates at their annual peak.
مارسThe St. Barths Bucket Regatta, an invitation-only race for the largest sailing yachts afloat, fills Gustavia harbour for a Wednesday-to-Sunday week.
أبريلLes Voiles de Saint-Barth brings a broader, mixed racing fleet to the island for a week around mid-month, traditionally the high season's last big fixture before the island quiets.
مايوThe high season winds down; villa and hotel rates fall as the island's pace slows toward its own low season.
يونيوThe Atlantic hurricane season opens on June 1, and with it the island's quiet, low-tourism months begin.
يوليوDeep in the hurricane season, with reduced hotel and restaurant capacity as some properties close for annual maintenance.
أغسطسStill within the hurricane season and the island's low season, with heat and humidity at their highest.
سبتمبرThe quietest and most exposed month of the hurricane season, historically the period of heaviest Atlantic storm activity.
أكتوبرHurricane season continues, though many hotels and restaurants begin reopening in preparation for the winter season ahead.
نوفمبرThe St. Barth Gourmet Festival, with visiting chefs taking over the island's restaurant kitchens for about a week, traditionally marks the opening of the season as hurricane season winds toward its official end on November 30.
ديسمبرThe high season resumes in earnest, building through the month to St Barts New Year's Eve, when the harbour and bay fill with yachts arriving for the season's peak week.

المطاراتGustaf III (SBH) · 3 km · تجاري — a 646-meter runway limited to small STOL aircraft; the steep hillside approach is one of the most distinctive in commercial aviation and requires a special pilot certification.Princess Juliana International (Sint Maarten) (SXM) · 25 km · تجاري — the regional hub most international travelers connect through, reaching St Barts by a short onward flight, ferry or helicopter.
الطيران الخاصGustaf III's short runway and mandatory pilot certification limit it to light aircraft such as Twin Otters, Pilatus PC-12s and Cessna Caravans; larger private jets land at Princess Juliana in Sint Maarten and transfer passengers onward by light aircraft, helicopter or boat.
المروحيةSeveral charter operators run on-demand helicopter transfers between Sint Maarten and St Barts, a flight of about ten minutes, as a quicker and costlier alternative to the ferry or a light-aircraft connection; there is no single scheduled shuttle comparable to the Riviera's Nice-Monaco service.
المراسيPort de Gustavia — the island's only real harbour, filled to capacity for New Year's Eve and used as the finish line for the Bucket Regatta and Les Voiles de Saint-Barth.
التنقل والتوجهSt Barts has no public transit; a small rental car, scooter or taxi covers the island's narrow, hilly roads. The airport and harbour both sit at the edge of Gustavia, and most of the island's beaches and villages are a short drive from each other.

07أماكن الفعاليات

الأحياء

Gustaviathe capital and harbour town, with duty-free boutiques along the quay and Swedish colonial-era forts and churches.
St Jeanthe island's busiest beach, next to the airport, with water-sports operators and beach clubs.
Lorienta quieter beach and residential area on the north coast.
Colombiera secluded beach on the northwest coast, reachable only on foot or by boat.
Grande Salinea clothing-optional beach on the south coast, undeveloped and without facilities.

مناطق الفندق

Villas rather than large hotels make up most of St Barts' accommodation; the small hotel stock concentrates around Gustavia's harbour, St Jean's beachfront and the quieter northern coves of Lorient and Pointe Milou. Demand during the New Year and Bucket Regatta weeks extends well beyond hotel capacity into the island's dense villa-rental market.

أحياء المطاعم

Gustavia's quayside carries the island's most visible restaurant row, facing the harbour and its yachts. St Jean has a beach-club-driven scene, and smaller restaurants are scattered through Lorient and the island's other villages.

المؤسسات الثقافية

Wall House (Municipal Museum)a former ship-chandlery on Gustavia's harbour, now a museum of the island's Swedish and French colonial history.

التسوق

Gustavia's Rue de la Republique and the harbourfront quay carry the island's duty-free boutiques, a legacy of its long history as a free port under both Swedish and French rule.

08كيف يتغير المكان

St Barts runs on a sharper seasonal switch than most Caribbean islands: a five-month high season from December to April carries almost all of its yachting and social calendar, while the seven-month hurricane season from June to November is a genuine off-season, with reduced hotel and restaurant capacity and villa rates at their lowest.

09التاريخ

French settlers arrived in 1648; the island passed to Sweden in 1784, when Louis XVI traded it away as commercially worthless in exchange for trading rights in Gothenburg, and Gustavia, named for King Gustav III, developed as a Swedish free port before France bought the island back in 1878 following an 1877 referendum. It was administered as part of Guadeloupe until a 2003 referendum began the process that made it a separate French overseas collectivity in 2007; it left the European Union's outermost-region status in 2012. The island has little agriculture or manufacturing and built its modern economy, from the 1960s onward, almost entirely around tourism and duty-free retail.
