Rome

Italy's capital, a heritage city with one clay-court fixture each May: the Italian Open.

Rome's founding legend places the city's start at 753 BC, though archaeological evidence points to a more gradual growth of hilltop settlements across the same centuries; either way, it went on to serve as capital of a kingdom, a republic and an empire that at its height ruled from the Atlantic to the Euphrates. After the Western Empire's fall, the papacy built temporal control over the city and the surrounding Papal States, a rule that lasted until Italian unification absorbed Rome as the new kingdom's capital in 1871. The municipality today holds about 2.75 million residents, the largest of any Italian city, with a metropolitan area of roughly 4.2 million.

Rome's one fixture on the international sporting calendar is the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, the clay-court tennis Masters played each May among the marble of the Foro Italico, in the final tune-up before Roland-Garros. Everything else that draws visitors, the Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica (inside a separate sovereign state), the Trevi Fountain, the Galleria Borghese, runs on the steady rhythm of a heritage capital rather than a seasonal calendar.

03Waarom het relevant is

Rome's international draw needs no seasonal justification: it is one of the world's most visited cities in any given month, on the strength of ancient and papal history rather than any modern trade or sporting fixture. The Italian Open is the exception, a genuine stop on the international tennis calendar that briefly overlays a sporting audience onto a city whose pull is otherwise constant and largely unrelated to timing.

LuchthavensRome Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) (FCO) · 30 km · commercieel — the main international gateway, southwest of the city.Rome Ciampino (CIA) · 16 km · commercieel — closer to the center than Fiumicino, used mainly by low-cost carriers and general aviation.
PrivéluchtvaartCiampino, closer to the center than Fiumicino, handles most business aviation serving Rome.
Verplaatsing ter plaatseTermini station is the main rail and metro hub, with high-speed connections to Florence, Milan, Naples and Venice. Fiumicino Airport handles most international traffic; Ciampino serves low-cost carriers. Rome's metro network covers the center unevenly, and traffic makes cars a poor option for visitors.

07Waar alles zich bevindt

Wijken

Centro Storicothe historic core around the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori.
Trastevereacross the Tiber, a dense, cobbled quarter known for nightlife and trattorias.
MontiRome's oldest rione, between the Colosseum and Termini, now known for boutiques and small restaurants.
Pratian orderly nineteenth-century grid near the Vatican, largely residential.
Testacciobuilt around the city's former slaughterhouse, now a center for food and nightlife.

Hotelgebieden

The Centro Storico, around the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, and the streets near the Spanish Steps hold the highest concentration of hotels within walking distance of the main sights. Prati, near the Vatican, offers a quieter, more residential register. During the Italian Open, demand shifts partly toward the Foro Italico and the Parioli district immediately north of it.

Restaurantwijken

Trastevere, across the Tiber, carries Rome's densest concentration of trattorias and evening life. Testaccio, built around the city's former slaughterhouse, holds a more local, ingredient-driven restaurant scene. Monti, north of the Colosseum, mixes small restaurants with independent boutiques.

Culturele instellingen

Colosseum and Roman Forumthe excavated center of ancient Rome.
Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilicawithin the separate sovereign state of Vatican City, enclosed by but not part of Rome.
Galleria Borghesethe Borghese family's collection, in a park north of the center, with timed-entry tickets required.
Foro Italicothe 1930s sports complex that hosts the Italian Open each May.

Winkelen

Via dei Condotti and the streets around the Spanish Steps hold Rome's concentration of luxury boutiques; Via del Corso carries a higher-volume, more general retail mix through the center.

08Hoe de bestemming verandert

Rome's tourist calendar runs year-round with a wide summer peak and an Easter spike layered on top of a heritage city's steady baseline traffic. The Italian Open is the one week when a sporting rather than historical or religious calendar sets the pace.

09Geschiedenis

The Foro Italico, the marble sports complex built under Mussolini in the 1930s and originally named the Foro Mussolini, has hosted the Italian Open since the tournament's 1930 founding, one of the longer-running fixtures on the professional tennis calendar. Rome's deeper history is better read at the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill than in any single museum.
