Madrid

Spain's capital, its spring calendar now joined by a new September Formula 1 race.

Madrid sits at roughly 660 meters on Spain's central plateau, which makes it Europe's second-highest capital and gives it a climate sharper than its southern latitude suggests: cold, occasionally snowy winters and summers that run reliably into the mid-30s Celsius. The city's rise to capital status was a single administrative decision rather than a gradual one. Philip II moved his court here in 1561, choosing a mid-sized Castilian town with no coast, no navigable river and no prior claim to primacy over Toledo or Valladolid, mainly for its position at the center of the peninsula. Everything that reads today as historic Madrid, the Habsburg-era Plaza Mayor, the Bourbon rebuilding of the Royal Palace after an 1734 fire, and Charles III's Enlightenment-era Paseo del Prado, was built to furnish a capital that geography had not provided on its own.

That inland position still shapes how the city sits in the international calendar. Madrid has no yachting week and no coastal season; its fixed points are an art fair, a tennis tournament and, from 2026, a motor race, each imported rather than native to the place, and each scheduled around the milder shoulders of a climate that discourages a long outdoor season. ARCOmadrid, the city's international contemporary art fair, runs in late winter; the Mutua Madrid Open brings clay-court tennis to the Caja Magica in late April and early May; and the Spanish Grand Prix, at a purpose-built circuit called Madring, arrives in September after decades of the race being run at Barcelona's Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Outside those weeks, Madrid runs as what it has been since 1561: a national capital with the museum density, government functions and permanent population of one, rather than a resort with an on-and-off season. The Prado, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, three museums within walking distance of each other along the Paseo del Prado, hold one of Europe's denser concentrations of major public art collections, and Retiro Park next to them was a private royal garden for more than two centuries before it opened to the public in 1868.

03Waarom het relevant is

Madrid's 2026 addition to the international motorsport calendar is a genuine change in the map: Formula 1 has raced in Spain at Barcelona for more than three decades, and moving the Spanish Grand Prix to a new street circuit at Madrid's IFEMA exhibition ground is the sport's clearest recent bet on a capital city's draw over a fixed racetrack's. In our reading, that bet is really about audience and sponsorship reach rather than the racing itself, since a street circuit built around a convention center has no motorsport history to trade on the way Barcelona's did. Alongside that new fixture, ARCOmadrid and the Mutua Madrid Open already gave the city an established spring calendar; what is useful for a visitor to any of the three is that Madrid's core sights, the Prado's collection, the Royal Palace's exterior and changing of the guard, and Retiro Park, are free or modestly ticketed and unaffected by any of the three weeks' hospitality structures.

04Het jaar, maand voor maand

JanuariA quiet month by the standards of Madrid's calendar, cold by Spanish standards and without any of the city's fixed fairs or tournaments.
FebruariARCOmadrid, the city's international contemporary art fair, is typically held in the second half of the month at IFEMA, drawing galleries from Spain and Latin America in particular.
MaartIn years when ARCOmadrid falls in early March rather than February, it anchors the month; otherwise the city moves toward spring with milder, more variable weather.
AprilThe Mutua Madrid Open begins in the second half of the month at the Caja Magica, running into May as one of clay-court tennis's two Masters 1000 events alongside Rome.
MeiThe Madrid Open finishes in the first days of the month, and the feast of San Isidro, the city's patron saint, on May 15 brings a week of free public events, traditional dress and a bullfighting season at Las Ventas.
JuniTemperatures climb quickly and the city's outdoor social life shifts toward its parks and terraces in the evenings rather than the middle of the day.
JuliHigh summer heat sets in, regularly into the mid-30s Celsius, and much of the resident population that can leave does so; museums and the historic center stay open and comparatively uncrowded.
AugustusThe hottest and quietest month for residents, with many restaurants closed for the owners' own holidays even as the Prado and other museums keep normal hours.
SeptemberThe city returns to its working rhythm, and from 2026 hosts the Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit in the second week of the month.
OktoberA mild, comfortable month with no fixed fair or tournament of its own, good walking weather across the Paseo del Prado and Retiro Park.
NovemberThe cultural season of theater, opera at the Teatro Real and gallery openings runs at a steady pace without a single headline week.
DecemberA modest festive season builds through the month around Puerta del Sol and Gran Via, without the scale of Madrid's spring and autumn fixtures.

LuchthavensAdolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas (MAD) · 13 km · commercieel — Spain's busiest airport and Iberia's principal hub, northeast of the city center.
PrivéluchtvaartAdolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas has dedicated business-aviation handling alongside its commercial terminals, and Cuatro Vientos, a smaller airport within the city's southwestern edge, handles general-aviation traffic.
Verplaatsing ter plaatseMadrid's metro network is one of Europe's largest by length, supplemented by an extensive bus system and Cercanias commuter trains; the historic center is compact enough to walk once reached. High-speed AVE trains connect Atocha and Chamartin stations to Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and other Spanish cities in a few hours. Barajas airport connects directly to the metro and to intercity and high-speed rail.

07Waar alles zich bevindt

Wijken

Centrothe historic core, including Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and the streets around the Royal Palace.
Salamancathe city's principal upscale shopping and residential district, centered on Calle Serrano.
Chuecaa dense nightlife and dining district and the center of Madrid's LGBTQ+ life.
Malasanaa former working-class quarter now known for bars, independent shops and a bohemian character dating to the 1980s Movida Madrilena.
La Latinaa hillside district of tapas bars, and home each Sunday to the El Rastro flea market.
Retirothe residential district around Retiro Park, on the east side of the Paseo del Prado museums.

Hotelgebieden

The area around the Paseo del Prado and Retiro puts visitors within walking distance of the city's three principal museums and the park. Salamanca offers a quieter, more residential register close to the main shopping streets. The Gran Via and Sol area sits at the center of the city's theater and retail district, busiest and loudest at night. Hotel demand rises across all these areas during ARCOmadrid, the Madrid Open and, from 2026, Spanish Grand Prix week, though Madrid's much larger hotel stock than a resort town's means the pressure is milder than in smaller destinations on this calendar.

Restaurantwijken

La Latina holds the densest concentration of traditional tapas bars, especially around Calle Cava Baja. Chueca and Malasana carry a denser, younger restaurant and bar scene. Salamanca's streets hold a more formal, higher-end register, and the areas around Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol cater heavily to visitors rather than residents.

Culturele instellingen

Museo del PradoSpain's national art museum, opened in 1819, anchoring the Paseo del Prado alongside the Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza.
Museo Reina Sofiathe national museum of twentieth-century art, holding Picasso's Guernica.
Museo Thyssen-Bornemiszaa private collection turned public museum, opened in 1992.
Royal Palace of Madridthe official residence of the Spanish royal family, used for state ceremonies, with a public changing of the guard.
Teatro RealMadrid's opera house, on Plaza de Oriente facing the Royal Palace.
Retiro Parka former royal garden opened to the public in 1868, holding the Crystal Palace exhibition hall; part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing with the Paseo del Prado since 2021.

Winkelen

Salamanca's streets, particularly Calle Serrano and Calle Ortega y Gasset, hold Madrid's concentration of flagship boutiques. Gran Via carries larger-format and more accessible retail. The Sunday-morning El Rastro market in La Latina is the city's best-known flea market, free to browse.

08Hoe de bestemming verandert

Madrid's year is shaped more by its continental climate than by any tourism season: a cold winter, a short, intense spring that carries the Madrid Open and San Isidro, a summer hot enough that much of the resident population leaves in August, and a mild autumn that from 2026 carries the Spanish Grand Prix. Unlike the resort destinations on this calendar, the city does not close for any part of the year.

09Geschiedenis

A Muslim fortress called Mayrit was built above the Manzanares River in the ninth century under the Emirate of Cordoba, and passed to Christian control in 1085 under Alfonso VI, remaining a secondary Castilian town for the next five centuries. Philip II's decision in 1561 to move his court here, choosing central position over any existing claim to primacy, is the single event that made Madrid a capital rather than a market town. The Habsburgs built the Plaza Mayor in the following decades; after a fire destroyed the old Alcazar, the Bourbons built the current Royal Palace from 1738; and Charles III's Enlightenment-era public works, including the Prado's building, originally a natural history cabinet, and the Retiro's opening to the public in 1868, gave the city the museum district it still uses today. Madrid held out as the Spanish Republic's capital through a prolonged siege in the Civil War before falling in 1939, and its cultural life reopened dramatically after 1975 in the Movida Madrilena, the youth culture movement centered on neighborhoods like Malasana. The 2026 Spanish Grand Prix's move from Barcelona to a new circuit at IFEMA is the most recent addition to a calendar otherwise built by the city's institutions rather than its geography.
