Maastricht

The Dutch city TEFAF calls home each March, now secured there through 2036.

Une page de destination est organisée autour du temps : quand le lieu est incontournable, quels événements le rendent tel, et comment il évolue au fil de l'année — puis la géographie pratique (aéroports, marinas, quartiers, zones hôtelières).

A narrow finger of Dutch territory pressed between Belgium and Germany comes to a point at Maastricht, on the Meuse river in the far southeast of the Netherlands and the capital of Limburg province. Roman surveyors laid out a river crossing here around 50 AD, and the roughly 120,000 people who live in the municipality today share a city with more than 1,600 protected national heritage buildings, second in number only to Amsterdam. Maastricht's name is attached to one piece of history far larger than its size would suggest: the Maastricht Treaty, signed here in 1992, created the European Union and set the terms for the euro.

Since 1988, Maastricht has also been the fixed home of TEFAF, the world's leading fair for historical art, antiques and design, held each March at the MECC exhibition center. The 2026 edition drew more than 50,000 visitors from 75 countries to see 277 dealers' stands, according to the organizer. On September 8, 2026, TEFAF and MECC Maastricht announced a new ten-year agreement, backed by the Province of Limburg and the Municipality of Maastricht, keeping the fair in the city through 2036 — a public commitment that settles, at least for the next decade, any question of whether a Dutch provincial city can keep hold of a fair this size.

03Pourquoi c'est important

TEFAF's vetting process, in which specialists examine every object on every stand before the doors open, is the substantive reason museum curators and major collectors treat the fair as a working tool rather than a social week; that story belongs mainly to the event's own record. For Maastricht specifically, what stands out is scale mismatch: a city of 120,000 with a modest hotel stock commands a fixed week of the international art calendar purely on the strength of one fair's reputation, and the organizer's own figures put TEFAF's economic impact at €86.4 million nationally, €37.9 million of it in Maastricht alone. The newly announced ten-year extension suggests both sides regard that arrangement as worth defending rather than renegotiating from scratch each cycle.

07Où se trouvent les choses

Quartiers

Binnenstadthe pedestrianized historic center on the west bank, holding the Vrijthof and most shops and restaurants.
Wyckthe historic quarter on the east bank, reached over the Sint Servaasbrug, with the Rechtstraat's independent shops and restaurants.
Céramiquea redeveloped district on former pottery-factory land, home to the Bonnefanten Museum.

Quartiers d'hôtels

Maastricht's hotel stock is small relative to TEFAF week's demand, concentrated in the Binnenstad and Wyck; during the fair, a significant share of visitors stay across the border in Aachen and Cologne in Germany or Liège and Brussels in Belgium, or in Eindhoven and Amsterdam further into the Netherlands.

Quartiers gastronomiques

The Vrijthof's terraces and the streets of the Binnenstad carry the greatest concentration of restaurants; Wyck's Rechtstraat and the Stokstraat quarter in the Binnenstad hold a smaller, more independent register of shops and dining.

Institutions culturelles

Bonnefanten Museumthe region's main art museum, in a tower designed by Aldo Rossi on the Céramique riverbank.
Basilica of Saint Servatiuson the Vrijthof, among the oldest churches in the Netherlands.
Basilica of Our Ladya Romanesque church a short walk from the Vrijthof.
MECC Maastrichtthe exhibition and congress center that hosts TEFAF each March.

Commerce

The Stokstraat quarter in the Binnenstad holds Maastricht's more upscale shops; the surrounding pedestrian streets carry mainstream Dutch and Belgian retail, drawing cross-border shoppers from both neighboring countries.

08Comment le lieu évolue

Maastricht is an even-paced provincial city for most of the year, its main punctuation points a regional Carnival in February or March, TEFAF's single fixed week a few weeks later, and a Christmas market at the year's close.

09Historique

Roman surveyors built a Meuse crossing at Maastricht around 50 AD on the road linking Boulogne and Cologne, and the city grew through the Middle Ages as a pilgrimage site around the shrine of its bishop, Saint Servatius. River trade built the prosperity behind a historic center that is today one of the most densely protected in the Netherlands. The city's turn toward the international stage came in 1992, when European Community leaders met here to sign the treaty that created the European Union and laid the groundwork for the euro. TEFAF, founded in 1988, gave the city a second and very different international institution, and the ten-year agreement TEFAF and MECC Maastricht announced on September 8, 2026, keeping the fair here through 2036, marks close to forty years of that partnership.
