Bordeaux

The Atlantic wine capital, busiest each spring during En Primeur tasting week.

Страница направления организована по временно́му принципу: когда место приобретает значимость, какие события её определяют и как она меняется на протяжении года, — а затем следует практическая география (аэропорты, марины, районы, гостиничные кварталы).

The Garonne River bends into a crescent at Bordeaux, in southwestern France — the Port de la Lune shape that gave the eighteenth-century city its layout and, in 2007, its UNESCO World Heritage listing. About 268,000 people live in the city proper and roughly 1.4 million across the metro area, France's sixth-largest. The surrounding region is the reference point for fine wine worldwide, with the Médoc, Saint-Émilion, Graves and Sauternes appellations all within day-trip distance.

Bordeaux's own calendar follows the wine trade's rhythm rather than a resort's or a capital's. Its most distinctive fixture is En Primeur week each spring, when the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux opens barrel samples of the previous vintage to négociants, critics and importers who score it months before bottling. The rest of the year runs on the vines' schedule: growth through spring and summer, harvest from September, and a quiet trade winter as the new vintage ages.

03Почему это важно

Bordeaux concentrates the wine trade's own calendar most visibly during En Primeur week, when the city's hotels fill with the négociants, critics and importers who help set prices for a vintage still in barrel. In our reading, Bordeaux's real April audience is the trade rather than the traveler — the châteaux's more public hospitality runs on a separate calendar of its own.

04Год, месяц за месяцем

ЯнварьA quiet month; the trade's attention is on barrel-aging the just-finished harvest rather than any public event.
ФевральOrdinary civic pace, with mild, wet Atlantic winter weather typical for the season.
МартChâteaux across the region prepare barrel samples as En Primeur's trade arrival approaches.
АпрельEn Primeur week brings négociants, critics and importers to taste and score the previous vintage before bottling, typically in the first half of the month; hotels fill with trade and press rather than tourists.
МайA quieter month between En Primeur and summer, with vines in full leaf across the appellations.
ИюньWine tourism to the châteaux picks up as summer begins and Atlantic weather turns reliably warm.
ИюльHigh summer draws visitors to the city and to the coast at nearby Arcachon.
АвгустA quieter month in the city itself, typical of provincial France, though the coast stays busy.
СентябрьHarvest begins across the appellations, drawing visitors even though it is a working season, not a public one.
ОктябрьHarvest concludes in most appellations and the city returns to rhythm as the new vintage ferments.
НоябрьA quiet autumn month, with the year's heaviest rainfall typical for the region.
ДекабрьThe holidays bring a modest visitor increase; the wine trade's year closes until the following spring's En Primeur.

06Как добраться и передвигаться

АэропортыBordeaux-Mérignac (BOD) · 12 km · коммерческий — the region's main airport, west of the city, also handling general and business aviation.
Деловая авиацияBordeaux-Mérignac handles general and business aviation alongside its commercial traffic; there is no separate dedicated business-aviation field for the city.
МариныPort de la Lune — the historic crescent harbor on the Garonne that gave the UNESCO-listed city center its name, today used more by river-cruise vessels and pleasure boats than commercial shipping.
Как ориентироватьсяTGV service from Paris Montparnasse takes a little over two hours, in place since the 2017 opening of the LGV Sud Europe Atlantique line. A tram covers the city center and quays, but a car is generally needed to reach the vineyards: the Médoc north, Saint-Émilion about 35 km east, Graves and Sauternes south.

07Где что находится

Районы

Saint-Pierrethe pedestrianized medieval historic center, dense with restaurants.
Chartronsthe former wine-merchants' quarter along the river, its old warehouses now galleries, shops and restaurants.
The Golden Triangle (Triangle d'Or)between Cours Clemenceau, Cours de l'Intendance and allées de Tourny, the main shopping quarter.
Saint-Michela diverse quarter around the basilica, known for its market and antique dealers.

Районы отеля

City-center hotels near the quays and the Golden Triangle are the main visitor address for both trade and tourist visits. Château hotels scattered among the vineyards offer a separate, more rural register for wine-focused stays outside the city itself.

Ресторанные кварталы

Chartrons and Saint-Pierre carry the greatest density of restaurants. The quayside near Place de la Bourse, with its Miroir d'Eau reflecting pool, is the city's principal public gathering point rather than a dining district as such.

Культурные институции

Cité du Vinthe wine-culture museum on the river north of the center, opened in 2016.
Grand Théâtre de Bordeauxthe eighteenth-century opera house at the head of Cours du Chapeau Rouge.
Musée d'Aquitainethe regional history museum, covering the city's port and trade history.
Place de la Boursethe eighteenth-century riverfront square and its Miroir d'Eau reflecting pool, the city's most photographed public space.

Шопинг

The Golden Triangle and rue Sainte-Catherine, one of Europe's longest pedestrian shopping streets, carry mainstream and luxury retail; Chartrons holds the city's antique dealers and wine merchants.

08Как меняется это место

Bordeaux moves from a quiet winter civic rhythm to April's En Primeur trade surge, a summer tourist season oriented toward the coast, and a working harvest season across the appellations in September and October.

09История

Bordeaux began as the Celtic and later Roman port of Burdigala. Eleanor of Aquitaine's marriage to Henry II of England in 1152 placed the region under English rule for three centuries and built the wine trade with England that gave claret its name. The city's eighteenth-century golden age made it France's busiest port and, briefly, the world's second-busiest after London, financed by the wine and colonial trade that also built the Port de la Lune's crescent of stone facades. En Primeur, selling wine as a future before bottling, developed as a way for châteaux to fund each vintage. UNESCO listed the historic center in 2007, and the Cité du Vin, opened in 2016, marked a reinvestment in the city's wine identity.
