Antigua

A Caribbean yachting base, in season December to April, hurricane season June to November.

Antigua is the larger of the two main islands of Antigua and Barbuda, an independent Commonwealth realm in the eastern Caribbean with a population of roughly 83,000 concentrated mostly around the capital, St John's, on the island's northwest coast. Reputed to hold 365 beaches, one for each day of the year, its more lasting distinction is a pair of adjoining, deep, hurricane-sheltered harbours on the south coast, English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour, that have made the island a winter base for the Caribbean charter and racing yacht fleet since the Royal Navy first fortified the anchorage in the eighteenth century.

That inheritance still defines Antigua's international calendar. Antigua Sailing Week each April and the Antigua Charter Yacht Show each December are both built around Nelson's Dockyard, a restored Georgian-era naval yard and UNESCO World Heritage Site in English Harbour that remains a working marina today. Outside those two weeks, the island runs as an ordinary, dry-season Caribbean destination, its economy built on tourism rather than the sugar plantations that once dominated it.

03Waarom het relevant is

Antigua's place on the calendar rests on English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour's long-standing role as a winter base for the Caribbean's charter yacht fleet, a role that predates most of the region's newer resort competition and was built directly on the Royal Navy's eighteenth-century dockyard. Antigua Sailing Week, one of the oldest regattas of its kind, and the Charter Yacht Show, a trade fixture with few real rivals, both trade on that inherited infrastructure rather than on any newly built marina or airport. In our reading, Antigua's calendar is smaller and more purely nautical than St Barts': there is no equivalent of a New Year's Eve harbour spectacle here, only the working business of the charter trade and one long-running week of racing.

07Waar alles zich bevindt

Wijken

English Harbourthe historic naval anchorage holding Nelson's Dockyard, on the island's sheltered southeastern coast.
Falmouth Harbourthe adjoining, larger anchorage just to its west, home to most of the charter fleet's marina berths.
St John'sthe capital, on the northwest coast, built around Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay's cruise-ship shopping districts.

Hotelgebieden

Hotels and resorts cluster along the south coast around English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour, within reach of the sailing and charter-show calendar, and along the calmer west coast near St John's. The island's modest hotel stock means charter-yacht accommodation, not hotel rooms, absorbs most of the demand during Sailing Week and the Charter Yacht Show.

Restaurantwijken

Falmouth Harbour and English Harbour's marina-front restaurants serve the yachting crowd through the winter season. St John's Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay carry the capital's cruise-oriented shopping and dining.

Culturele instellingen

Nelson's Dockyard National Parkthe restored Georgian dockyard and its museum, the centerpiece of Antigua's UNESCO World Heritage listing.
St. John's Cathedralthe Anglican cathedral whose baroque towers dominate the capital's skyline.

Winkelen

Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay in St John's hold the capital's cruise-oriented shopping, Heritage Quay newer and busier and Redcliffe Quay's colonial-era buildings quieter.

08Hoe de bestemming verandert

Antigua's year divides along the same line as the rest of the eastern Caribbean: a December-to-April dry season carries almost all of its visitor and yachting calendar, while the June-to-November hurricane season is the island's quiet stretch, with reduced charter and hotel activity.

09Geschiedenis

Christopher Columbus sighted Antigua in 1493 and named it for a church in Seville; English colonists from St Kitts settled the island in 1632, and it became a major sugar colony under British rule, worked by enslaved labor until abolition in 1834. Horatio Nelson commanded the Royal Navy's Leeward Islands station from English Harbour in the 1780s, and the dockyard built to service and defend the fleet there, restored from the 1950s onward, now carries his name and UNESCO World Heritage status. Antigua and Barbuda gained associated statehood with Britain in 1967 and full independence in November 1981. Nelson's Dockyard's restoration and the growth of English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour as yachting bases through the second half of the twentieth century built the charter and racing economy that now defines the island's winter season.
