International Tennis Circuit

Four Slams and the tournaments around them, January to November

La secuencia

Las etapas están en orden cronológico. Las fechas mostradas corresponden a la próxima edición de cada etapa; un estado discontinuo indica que el organizador aún no ha confirmado.

01Quién lo sigue

Tennis has the most evenly international public of any sport on this site, and the circuit's followers are correspondingly broad: the players' entourages and the sport's sponsors, the members of the host clubs, the corporate hospitality market that fills the boxes at Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows, and a general public that buys tickets in the hundreds of thousands. The Riviera and Rome legs in spring draw the crowd that will be at Cannes and Monaco a month later; Wimbledon draws the British season's; the US Open draws New York's.

02Por qué estos eventos se vinculan

The tour connects them. The four majors are fixed by the calendar year, Melbourne in January, Paris in late May and June, Wimbledon at the turn of June and July, New York at the turn of August and September, and the Masters-level events are placed between them: Indian Wells and Miami in March, Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome in April and May as the clay season leading to Roland-Garros, Queen's Club as the grass warm-up for Wimbledon, the Laver Cup in September and the ATP Finals in Turin in November as the ends. The order rarely changes, and the surfaces explain it.

Numerados en orden de etapa; la línea discontinua sigue la secuencia.

03La progresión habitual

Melbourne for the last fortnight of January. Indian Wells in the second week of March and Miami straight after, the two together known as the Sunshine Double. Monte-Carlo in the second week of April to open the clay season, Madrid at the end of April, Rome in the second week of May, Roland-Garros from the last Sunday of May. Queen's Club in mid-June, Wimbledon from the last Monday of June or the first of July. Flushing Meadows from the last Monday of August. The Laver Cup in late September and the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin in the second week of November close the year.

04Geografía

Four majors on four surfaces in four cities: Melbourne, Paris, London and New York. Between them the circuit runs through the California desert and Miami, then the Riviera, Madrid and Rome, then London's west side, then Turin. Monte-Carlo's courts at Roquebrune are the one stop where the tennis is played with the sea below it.

05Calendario sugerido

Wimbledon's second week and the US Open's second week are the natural blocks, each covering the quarter-finals to the final in a city worth being in. Roland-Garros' first week is the least crowded of the four majors' and the best weather bet. Monte-Carlo in April is the one to pair with the Riviera before the season starts. Wimbledon's ticket ballot opens the previous autumn; debenture and hospitality seats are the alternative and are priced accordingly by their sellers.

06Solapamientos importantes

Roland-Garros' second week now coincides with the Monaco Grand Prix and the Epsom Derby. Wimbledon's first week overlaps Henley Royal Regatta and the Paris couture shows; its second overlaps the Goodwood Festival of Speed in some years and the British Grand Prix in others. The US Open's first week shares the calendar with the Venice Film Festival, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and Telluride, and its second with New York Fashion Week's start. Monte-Carlo coincides with Watches and Wonders in Geneva and the Masters in Augusta.

07Adónde va la gente después

After Melbourne, the tour's followers scatter until the desert in March. After Roland-Garros, to Monaco or London. After Wimbledon, to the coast. After the US Open, into the New York autumn: fashion week, then the October fairs in London and Paris. After Turin, the year is over until Melbourne.
