Sundance to Capri: the festival year and the awards it feeds

La secuencia

Las etapas están en orden cronológico. Las fechas mostradas corresponden a la próxima edición de cada etapa; un estado discontinuo indica que el organizador aún no ha confirmado.

01Quién lo sigue

The industry, in the widest sense: producers, distributors, sales agents, financiers, festival programmers, the trade and general press, publicists and the talent they represent, and the guilds and academies whose votes the autumn festivals are staged to influence. Cannes has a market attached and the most accredited press of any festival; Venice, Telluride and Toronto open the awards season; Sundance is the independent market; Berlin is the winter festival with a public audience of several hundred thousand. Ordinary ticket buyers can see the films at every one of them except Cannes, where public tickets are scarce.

02Por qué estos eventos se vinculan

The awards season connects them, and the films' release calendar does the rest. A film shown at Venice or Telluride over Labor Day weekend plays Toronto and London in the following weeks, is released in the autumn, and is voted on from the Golden Globes in January through the BAFTAs in February to the Academy Awards in March. Cannes in May sits outside that cycle and is the year's market and its most consequential premiere; Sundance in January sells the independent films the rest of the year will show; Berlin in February is the European festival with the largest public. Tribeca in June and Capri Hollywood at New Year are the circuit's smaller stops.

Numerados en orden de etapa; la línea discontinua sigue la secuencia.

03La progresión habitual

The Golden Globes in early January, Sundance in Park City in the second half of the month (Boulder from 2027), the Berlinale in the second week of February, the BAFTA ceremony in mid-February, the Academy Awards in early March. Cannes for twelve days in the second half of May, with the amfAR gala in its final days. Tribeca in New York in June. Venice from the last days of August into the second week of September, Telluride over Labor Day weekend, Toronto in the second week of September, the BFI London Film Festival in October, and Capri Hollywood over the turn of the year.

04Geografía

The Croisette in Cannes and the Lido in Venice are the two festival grounds the circuit is most associated with. Park City, Berlin, Toronto and London are city festivals; Telluride is a mountain town's Labor Day weekend; Los Angeles hosts the ceremonies. The autumn triangle (Venice, Telluride, Toronto) falls within ten days across two continents and is the circuit's busiest run.

05Calendario sugerido

Cannes' middle weekend, from the Thursday to the Sunday, is when the festival is fullest; the second week is when the market has gone home and the competition films are the point. Venice's first weekend is the one with the premieres. Toronto's first weekend and Berlin's second are the public's best. Accreditation at Cannes is for professionals and press; for others the Cinéma de la Plage screenings on the beach are free and the town is open. Hotels in Cannes for the festival are booked the previous summer.

06Solapamientos importantes

Cannes overlaps the Chelsea Flower Show, Villa d'Este, the PGA Championship, the Geneva spring auctions and the Monaco Grand Prix's approach. Venice coincides with the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, the US Open, Monza and Geneva Watch Days. Telluride and Toronto fall beside the Hampton Classic and New York Fashion Week. Sundance shares its fortnight with the Hahnenkamm, the Winter X Games and the Australian Open; the Berlinale with White Turf and the Miami boat show. The Academy Awards fall in the week of TEFAF Maastricht and Cheltenham.

07Adónde va la gente después

After Cannes, along the coast to Monaco for the Grand Prix. After Venice, across the lagoon to Milan for fashion week or to Toronto. After the Oscars, the industry's year restarts at Cannes; the crowd that follows the festivals rather than the films is in Palm Beach, the Alps or Monaco in March.
