European Summer Circuit

01Quem o acompanha

Almost everyone, at least in part. This is the circuit the others are measured against, and its followers are less a single crowd than the overlap of several: the film and yachting people who are in Cannes and stay for Monaco; the racing set that treats Epsom, Ascot and Goodwood as one season; the collectors who fly to Basel for a week in June; the tennis followers who move from Roland-Garros to Queen's to Wimbledon; and the general public, in very large numbers, who attend Ascot, Wimbledon, Henley and the Festival of Speed on ordinary tickets. It is also the circuit the hotel trade in London, Monaco and Cannes plans its year around.

02Por que estes eventos se conectam

They connect by date more than by subject. Cannes, the Monaco Grand Prix, Le Mans, Ascot, Art Basel, Wimbledon, Henley and Goodwood share no organizer, no sport and no discipline; what they share is a nine-week window in which each has held its place for decades, so that the sequence has become a route. The Riviera events run in the order the coast dictates, west to east; the English ones in the order the summer dictates, racecourse then river then downland. Basel sits in the middle as the one stop that is neither, and the Palio in Siena and the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo mark the point at which the circuit becomes the Mediterranean summer.

03A progressão típica

Cannes for the second half of May, then east along the coast for the Grand Prix in the first week of June. A week off, or Le Mans for the endurance followers, then London: Ascot in the third week of June, with the Basel diversion for those in the art trade that same week. Wimbledon's fortnight from the end of June, Henley in its first week, the couture shows in Paris in the first week of July for those who follow fashion, Goodwood's Festival of Speed in the middle of the month and the Open Championship after it. The circuit then dissolves southward: Siena on July 2 for the first Palio, Sardinia in September for the Rolex Cup, with the whole of August spent on the coast in between.

04Geografia

Two clusters and a bridge. The Riviera cluster is Cannes and Monaco, forty minutes apart by road and less by water, with Saint-Tropez to the west and Le Mans a flight north. The English cluster is London and the counties around it: Ascot in Berkshire, Wimbledon in south-west London, Henley in Oxfordshire, Goodwood in West Sussex, all within two hours of the capital. Basel is the bridge, an hour's flight from either. The Mediterranean tail runs through Tuscany to Sardinia.

05Calendário sugerido

The circuit rewards choosing two or three stops rather than attempting all of them. The Riviera fortnight (the festival's second week into Grand Prix weekend) and the English fortnight (Ascot week into Wimbledon's first week) are the two natural blocks; each covers three or four events from one base. Book the Riviera by January and Ascot-week London by March. The gap between Monaco and Ascot is ten days and is the best time to add Le Mans or Basel.

06Sobreposições relevantes

Royal Ascot and Art Basel share the third week of June every year, which is the circuit's one real conflict; the two crowds are different, but anyone in both trades must choose. Wimbledon's first week overlaps Henley's five days and the Paris couture shows. Cannes overlaps the Chelsea Flower Show and the Concorso d'Eleganza at Villa d'Este in its final days. The Monaco Grand Prix, the Epsom Derby and Roland-Garros' second week have fallen within the same ten days since the Grand Prix moved to June.

To the coast and the islands: Saint-Tropez, the Costa Smeralda, Capri and the Amalfi Coast, Ibiza and Mallorca, Mykonos. To the Alpine and Austrian music festivals, Salzburg and Bayreuth above all. To Scotland and the Edinburgh festivals in August for the British. And, in the third week of August, to Monterey for Car Week, which is the first fixed event after the circuit ends and the last before the autumn begins in Venice.
