The American winter has two publics that overlap in Florida: the mountain one in Aspen for the holidays and the X Games, and the coastal one in Palm Beach and Miami from January to April, which is where the equestrian, boat-show, art-fair, polo and tennis calendars all sit. The Winter Equestrian Festival brings the international show-jumping world to Wellington for twelve weeks; the Miami and Palm Beach boat shows bring the trade; Cavallino brings the Ferrari collectors; the Miami Open brings tennis; the Masters, three hours north in Augusta, ends the winter in April.

Climate and proximity. Southern Florida is the one part of the United States where a winter outdoor season is possible, and Palm Beach and Miami are seventy miles apart, so the events cluster there from the first week of January to the Masters. Aspen is the mountain counterpart, joined to Florida by the people who spend Christmas in one and February in the other. The calendar is more American than international, but it overlaps the Caribbean yachting season and the winter art fairs, and the same faces appear on both.

Cavallino Classic in the second half of January, the Palm Beach Show in February, the South Beach Wine & Food Festival in the fourth week of February and the Miami boat show in the third. The Palm Beach boat show in the third week of March and the Miami Open in the last two weeks of the month. The US Open Polo Championship in Wellington in April, and the Masters at Augusta in the second week of April as the season's close.

The third week of March, with the Palm Beach boat show and the Miami Open, is the busiest. Aspen's holiday fortnight is the most expensive lodging week of the American year and is booked the previous winter; late January, for the X Games, is the alternative.
